Cloudy Creek walk
Oct. 2021 • Friends
We drove into Paluma from Big Crystal Creek campground and tackled the approx 3km return Cloudy Creek walk. It’s an easy, pretty walk through rainforest with some nice lookouts (Witts & McClelland lookouts are accessed via the Cloudy Creek trail) and ends in Cloudy Creek Falls. We saw a large black snake on the track guarding one of the lookouts so keep your eyes on the track!

Afterwards we had a swim in nearby Little Crystal Creek and a friend and I jumped from the top of the lower falls into the pool below (safe and lots of fun). We also got coffee at the nearby Rainforest Inn cafe in Paluma village. Be careful dribbling my along Mount Spec Road as it is narrow and drops off vertically along several sections.

Paluma Range National Park
Sep. 2020 • Friends
We went on a outstanding hike with the “Townsville Hike and Explore Group” 🥾 in Paluma.

After an amazing and treacherous off trail hike straight through the rainforest, over boulders and rocks, down waterfalls we arrived at the bottom of the most magical and secluded waterhole for a swim🤩 so much of this amazing national park is not yet touched!

After we emerged from the dense jungle section of the hike we made it to the rocky river and the big Crystal creek waterslides⛰ we hiked 15 km and every second of this hike was amazing.

Beautiful rainforest!

A piece of unspoiled rainforest, alongside the crisp Paluma Dam. Great for camping, hiking, mountain biking, paddling and exploring. Highly recommended!

For the adventurer

If you park at Little Crystal Creek, you can access a wide variety of trails into this forestry.

Big Crystal Creek, Cloudy Creek Falls, McClellendas Lookout and Little Crystal Creek are all accessable from here and worth making a day of it

Beautiful area
Feb. 2020 • Friends
As long as there is adequate runoff this is an awesome area for aquatic exploration. Marine creatures (fish, reptiles, and amphibians) are certain to be encountered. There are numerous of excellent swimming areas all along the creek including cliff jumping areas really make this destination stand out in Northern Queensland

Day out

Just gorgeous, weather wasn't hot enough to swim, but would be amazing on a summer day with picnic. Its a National park, so no pets allowed.

Connect with Nature and Breathe in the Mist
Jan. 2019 • Solo
When you are tired of the heat - head up Crystal Creek for a relaxing walk on their clear paths. I bought myself a healthy picnic lunch before heading up the mountain. As I was on holidays, it was mid week and oh so very quiet. I walked along wide and clearly marked paths while the mist was still clearing - even though it was midday.
The air was damp. The birds were singing.

The trees provided much need shelter and protection from the blazing sun. The Queensland summers are always good times to enjoy the cool water in the creek, or in the beach or at my family home neighbour's pool.

If you feel like a relief from the heat and your life stressors - this is the place to head with your walking shoes, swimmers and a healthy lunch & refreshments.
I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did <3.

Lovely place to picnic and swim
Sep. 2018 • Family
Have frequently stopped here when going up and down the Paluma Range road.
Very historic bridge. A real credit to the early stone masons that the bridge is still in use today.

In response to those who have to drive the road in a more sedate manner, yes the road is narrow and winds a lot so if you want to drive on an autobahn go to Germany and don't create a hazard on this beautiful scenic drive. Besides, if you go faster you will kill more wildlife, so give some thought to other than yourself.

Quiet, cool, refreshing and invigorating swimming in the creek. Ideal as a lunch stop but of course take your own lunch supplies.

Saturday: Overcrowded w Smelly Cigarette Smoker Air.
Nov. 2018 • Couples
The road is windy & narrow with many sections too small for 2 vehicles but there’s no warning signs (some places had warning signs & guard rails). There’s many large vehicles that take up more than their share of the road & they don’t slow down or attempt to give way (there are some who are polite & safe) There’s many oncoming drivers recklessly going way too fast (there were some who slowed down). It’d be a very steep drop if you get pushed off the shoulder on your way back down, with no guard rails in sections & so many reckless & inconsiderate drivers flying up the hill. It is an accident waiting to happen.
As far as Little Crystal Creek. It’s really pretty but it doesn’t take many people to become crowded & then overcrowded. The day we came (Saturday) it was crowded. The carpark was busy & with so much cigarette smoke in the air at the Creek we decided to get back in the car & drive further on & hoped that when we came back through it’d be quieter & less smelly. No such luck. It was even busier later in the day (around 3.30pm) with the carpark almost entirely full so we just drove on.
Someone commented here that it’s less crowded than in Cairns. Not at all. It was less crowded in the Mosman Gorge at Cairns probably because the swimming area was much larger.
Massive bug bear for me was the number of smokers who came to the rainforest to pollute it!? We drove for an hour from Townsville to breathe air that we could’ve just stayed & breathed in Flinders St (lots of smokers around there too) AND the number of people who disregarded the signs saying NO GLASS. Every second person (or more) had a glass beer bottle in their hand. A terrible nature experience.

Camping here sucks
Oct. 2018 • Family
It sucks because we were sold a permit for a busy long weekend only to get there and the place was chockers. I'd say most didn't have a permit. But apparently the rangers sell 80 max, the place is tiny! Most people have large spreads taking multiple spots. There is no enforcing. We had to leave and pay more bucks for a Big4 down the road. What are they thinking? A small campsite without numbered spots near busy coastal highway. It has a history of being a hoon hang out, rubbish in waterholes, atvs, glass...
