The Madonna del Parto is one of the greatest works of Piero del-la Francesca. Standing in the middle of a canopy made of pre-cious brocade, Our pregnant Lady reveals herself to the faithful. Two angels hold the tent canopy open allowing the faithful to admire the Virgin, majestic and solemn yet humble at the same time. The fresco was made around the middle of the ffteenth century in the church of Santa Maria di Momentana which no longer exists. It has been in this museum since 1992, right in the middle of a educational trail introducing visitors to the life and works of Piero della Francesca.

The fresco is in a small room, dark, that lightens up when you enter it. We were the only visitors, the museum is in a very small village not far from Sansepolcro, the town where Piero della Francesca was born. The Madonna is standing, with a hand on her side, a gesture very common with pregnant ladies, as if to... More

This museum located in the picturesque village of Monterchi is very well preserved. The Madonna del Parto is a beautiful art work by Piero della Francesca in the village where his mother was born! After visiting the museum, make sure to walk up till the top of the village where the beauty of the Tuscan landscape knows no bounds!

We drove through the beautiful countryside on our way to Monterchi with the single mission - to see the fresco of Madonna del Parto. I wondered if this single minded trip was worth the time in what was already a busy day of touring. The moment I laid eyes on this incredible fresco, not only did I know it was... More

Let's face it, Monterchi may be a charming and historic little Tuscan town, but there's only one reason why you are there: to see the Madonna del Parto. And she doesn't disappoint. The immense, calming stillness of the work is breathtaking. Take time to savour. The accompanying video is informative, but doesn't add much to the experience if you already... More

Only this one Pierro fresco. Unbelievably beautiful. Very helpful video. We loved it. Some great books in the little shop, a better English selection than we found anywhere else outside Florence. Nothing much else to see in Montarch but this is a good enough reason to make the trip.

Started in 1459 by Piero, the painting is really stunning with the pregnant Madonna being shown with two angels holding back a screen. In another room is a video depicting the background and creation of the painting and its discovery in a graveyard.

Any one with an interest in fresco must visit this museum and see one of Piero fella Francesca's most important works. The visit is augmented by an explanation of the art of fresco painting and room for children to create their own versions of the famous Madonna next door. If you are anywhere near Arezzo this museum is well worth... More

This small museum really has but the one frescoe to exhibit. However, it was one of the highlights of my quest to see as many of Piero Della Francesco's works as I could. An easy drive from Arezzo or Anghiari. There is a small cafe close by for lunch.

We enjoyed the walk up from the car park below, despite the rain, and the visit was interesting. The video was a little long, but provided some useful background. The picture itself has some issues, but has a serenity and engaging quality which makes it well worth seeing.

On the one hand, I love this wonderful Piero painting and don't begrudge whatever it costs in terms of time and money to see it. On the other hand, to descibe as a museum what used to be an old village schoolroom and then to charge 6.50 euros a head to see its one and only painting seems a bit... More
