Overlooking a beach, this fort sits on hill in Kormantin-Abandanze, Central Region. The hill offers a breathtaking view of the area. In 1640, the fort was destroyed by fire. The fort was refortified by the British and in 1661 the Royal African Company assumed ownership and it became the headquarters of the English Gold Coast activities. The Dutch re-captured the fort in 1665 and named it Fort Amsterdam. In 1811, the local people captured the fort and it is believed that the fort then became one of the first large enslavement structures. The name Kormantin was synonymous on the Caribbean islands for rebellious enslaved people. Fort Amsterdam is now in ruins and the Ghanian government has made an effort to preserve the site. However, the remnants of its purpose as an enslavement structure is clear, including holding cells for men and women and a "Door of No Return". The Fort is open from 9-4:30 pm and the entrance fee is about 10USD for foreign tourists. To get to the entrance requires a steep climb of about 100 feet.
