- Matthew PBrighton and Hove, United Kingdom786 contributionsPeaceful Tranquility in the Heart of KandyAmazing place with fantastic landscaped gardens and various outhouses containg everything from ferns to orchids. The grounds are beautifully laid out and plants well and clearly labelled making it a joy to walk around and take in such a delightful plethora of floral abundance. Give yourself a good 2 hours or more as the gardens are huge and to rush would take away the joy of this wonderful placeVisited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 November 2023
- SheffviewSheffield, United Kingdom710 contributionsOasis of calmThe gardens are nice way to spend a couple of hors away from the city. Very well planned out to circumnavigate without having to meander too much. The rickety suspension bridge across the river was an experience - a few more than the recommended 6 when we were on it.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 December 2023
- seema60Toronto, Canada970 contributionsBeautiful botanical garden in KandyI enjoyed visiting this well marked botanical garden. Many varieties of plants and native trees here. There are some interesting palms and it’s nice walking around. I could only spend an hour but one could easily spend more time relaxing in the lawns. It’s right next to the river.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 31 December 2023
- CHD6265Odiham, United Kingdom454 contributionsA must visit place in KandyAn absolutely beautiful place. A real oasis of calm and beauty in a frantic city. So much to see over 3-4 hours (including a spot of lunch). Be prepared to walk the perimeter to see it all including the bat colony in one corner of the park(hard to miss, follow the cacophony), the monkey zone, the suspension bridge (for max 6 but probably 20 on when we visited- guard seemed to nod everyone through!). Then a multitude of specialist plant houses and flower beds. Simply stunningVisited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2024
- OllossmBrundall, United Kingdom1,304 contributionsWonderful placeThis place was simply amazing. So much natural beauty on display. We managed to spend over 5hrs in here. You could do it faster but we could have easily spent more time here. Staff are really friendly throughout the gardens and we got pulled aside quite a few times for them to point out things. They seemed to take a very keen interest in making sure visitors saw things they might otherwise miss. Huge colony of fruit bats was pointed out to us. Troops of Toque macaques abound, plenty of magnificent birds and amazing displays of colour from the flowers. In some areas the scent of the flowers was quite heady. Restaurant on site we didn't try but the shop next to it selling drinks and snacks was really good value considering we were a captive audience. Probably our best value day in Kandy and quite possibly my favourite attraction. Highly recommendedVisited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 January 2024
- tedkirbyLexington, Massachusetts548 contributionsBeautiful! Highly recommendI visited here in December. The weather was nice and the gardens were beautiful! There were a wide variety of vegetation, including lots of tall trees, and very pretty plants. There were also lots of monkeys chilling around the place. There are bats too, you can hear them up in the trees. They are big bats, but I was told they are vegetarians. The grounds had lots of families and couples hanging about but it def did not feel crowded. There are bathrooms in the garden and they seem sanitary. Highly recommend!Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 February 2024
- PhilLongden-upon-Tern, United Kingdom90 contributionsBeautiful walk through Royal Botanical GardensBeautifully kept, very well laid out gardens with many species of trees, plants, shrubs and grasses. Giant Bamboos, many varieties of palms, huge trees. Tree lined avenues and riverside walk. Nice way to enjoy 2hrs relaxing in the open air.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 February 2024
- JR_EssexChelmsford, United Kingdom577 contributionsBeautiful and peacefulWe had a very enjoyable visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens. Kandy City can be noisy and quite polluted, so it was nice to get away to the gardens for some peace and clean air. The gardens are beautifully maintained and have a very relaxed feel. You are provided with a good map when you get your tickets and that is very useful to plan your route. Most impressive are probably the coconut palms. At the far end of the garden there is a wobbly suspension bridge out over the Mahaweli River, which is worth a walk on! There are also a large number of trees around the Great Circle planted by world leaders and royalty over the years, which is nice to see. All in all, a good place to spend a couple of hours.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 March 2024
- Jazz GumboLondon, United Kingdom872 contributionsGreat Botanical GardensA rally lovely & relaxing place to visit with many areas to enjoy throughout the gardens, some fabulous views to enjoy. A lot of history too, to absorb. The variety & care taken for the upkeep is first rate. Ensure you allow yourself the time to properly enjoy this place. Views from the suspension bridge are fantastic as well as interesting engineering construction.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 March 2024

We arrived early in the morning and were lucky to get a golf buggy and guide for an additional 1000rps. This helped us cover more than 5km of the beautiful gardens and ensured that we managed to see all the highlights within about an hour. Our guide was lovely! super friendly and informative and gave us good insight into the gardens history and fauna and flora. The entrance fee is 2000rps per person which is very reasonable considering the immaculate condition the garden is kept in. This is a must for nature lovers, photographers and artists!

Needless to say it was a massive spread of various plants and trees from around the world. Well maintained and clean with information on some of them which we found to be useful. Many tourists around due to its popularity though it could never get congested. A huge grassland in the middle gave our kids unimaginable space to play. Alongside was a cafe where I could only spot tourists, the locals were seated down on the grass with their modest meals.
We sat around them too and couldn’t have enough of the fresh air that is usually missing in gulf counties.
At 2000 LKR per adult it was worth our time and effort.

Large botanical gardens that are doing great work alongside Kew gardens amongst others. Some great tree species to see from around the world , as well as beautiful flowering plants. Loved the avenue of palms, the large , old mahogony tree and the Madagascan 'canon ball tree' with its beautiful fruits shaped like cannon balls and its beautiful flowers. Well laid out, well sign posted and very well maintained. You will probably need 3 hours plus to see it all. Although there is shade , it was hot walking around so take plenty of water. There is a cafe , ideally located by the large lawn if you want to stay longer/ are in need of refreshments.

This is a massive garden that is well-maintained with more than 4,000 species of plants, range from humongous trees to herbs, flora, palm trees, orchids, etc. It was built since 14th century as royal garden, but was destroyed during British occupation and was made as garden for coffee and cinnamons in 19th century. It was then under the administration of Department of Agriculture since 1912 when it was established. Beautiful place to spend for half a day especially for plants lovers. Many sitting benches, people also doing picnic on the lawns. Toilets are available within the park. Many different sections, such as palm tree sections, giant trees, orchid garden, cacti section, flowerbed section, etc. There is a section with interesting sights of lots of visible hanging bats on the tree branches. Overall it was a pleasant and therapeutic session to walk around the garden. Brochure indicates various species of birds can be found in the garden, but we could hardly see any. Also, the entrance fee is rather steep for foreigners at LKR2,000 per person per entry whereas locals only pay a small fraction.

My wife and I enjoyed a lovely casual stroll around the gardens on a sunny afternoon. The gardens are amazing with so many different species and variety of plans to see and admire. You can enjoy watching the monkeys play here too there are a lot of them around the trees and you can also see many flying squirrels here too. Well worth going here to chill and take a break.

Went at 9am to avoid the crowds although the temperature was low 30's.
Great shaded walkways.
Well laid out, easy to follow on the given map.
Tree signage brilliant with signage making you aware of the
poisoness trees and who planted what. Don't miss it if you visit Kandy.

It was a very pleasant and relaxing walk through this large botanical garden seeing so many different species of flowers and trees, as well as endemic vegetation. In hot day you can really enjoy the shade and the tour through alleys of palm trees. Give yourself 3-4 hours.

I have visited the garden as a teenager many times while living in Sri Lanka. After more than 30 years living abroad, I decided to take my teenagers to show this amazing place. It is very disappointing that they charge more than $40usd while the locals pay less than $1. Don’t get me wrong, this a very beautiful place but a steep cost for a family.

Visited for an afternoon and was a very pleasant stroll through lovely grounds. Tourists pay 2000rupees and you can hire a golf cart for an extra 2000 if you feel too hot too walk. They have a fantastic selection of trees which are nice and shady to sit under and there is a lovely cool cafeteria where you can sit and have lunch and soft drinks at reasonable prices.

This is a very large, well maintained garden with lots to see as you wander around. You’ll need at least a couple of hours for a quick tour. There is quite a bit of renovation going on so some places are closed. It costs 2000 rupees for foreigners to get in. Street vendors aren’t allowed in so your visit will be relaxed and hassle free. We didn’t visit at the best time of year in terms of flowers, but it was lovely nonetheless.

If you're planning a proper celebration, you’ll need to get permission from the authorities. However, a simple gathering, like cutting a cake with a few people, shouldn’t be an issue.

Is it allowed to have picnic dates with friends inside the garden? Planning to do one . Is it allowed to carry food inside? Eg : cake , donuts , cupcakes etc

I'm sorry as I really don't know. My guess is that you probably can but that is just my guess.

The RBG has lots of open grassy areas where many people sit on the grass, and I don't see an issue with it. However, it wouldn't hurt to inquire when you purchase your ticket, just to be certain.
