This late in the year, the flora is rather monotonous, and in the heat of the day, few animals reptiles, mammals or birds were about either. We only stayed for 1/2 hour

Did this in May when the sun was not too strong. In the summer start as early as you can as there is little shade. The guide books mostly give directions from top to bottom and then bus or taxi back to your car, but...More

leave you car and just walk. It's a 90 minute walk up from the beach and 60 minutes back and worth every minute

Pleasant downhill gorge walk. Good to do it early morning as it will be hot at mid-day. Lovely scenery. Peaceful.

We decided to park at point "A" a little way outside the village and save ourselves the walk to the start of the gorge. A good move as I don't think you miss much! The gorge walk is pretty well posted and well worth doing...More

We went as a day trip, from the bottom up and back out again, and it was really good fun. You can imagine hiding in those caves and how arduous it must've been to stash the dead bodies in any of them. There is good...More

Hi, I'm wary of heights and my balance can be dodgy- does the path have any sheer drops along the way?!

Hi there, You can stay on relatively flat ground, as in the dry season it is a dried riverbed. The path does get narrow in some spots, and it is possible to slip on some of the rocky terrain as well. You can choose to stay... More
Is there a bus system similar to the Samaria Gorge, that will drop you off at the top of the Valley of the Dead Gorge and then you get to hike down to the ocean and a bus will pick you up to take you to another city?

Not really. There is a bus service (not frequent) which I suppose you could use, but as has been mentioned, it isn't a strenuous walk. If you are starting from Kato Zakros I'd recommend walking up the Old Zakros Road (nice... More
