The monastery is a serene place isolated in the mountains. The inside garden with its small creek feels like and oasis. The building is majestic. The monks look mostly strict. Free entry, except for big groups. There is a whole market along the road between the parking lot and the monastery, where you can buy local food (mostly jam and honey).

We went there early on a weekday and were pleasantly surprised to be the only tourists there. Some of the buildings were closed but we were able to ask for the museums to open. Be careful as we did not find anyone who spoke english but with signs and some patience we could make ourselves understood. The church had a... More

A place that fills you with peace and bliss. One place worth a visit, even for a while. The monastery is an important monument of Christian architecture and one of the largest and olders Eastern Orthodox monastiers in Europe. The monastery is known and appreciated for the unique combination of Byzantine, Georgian and Bulgarian culture, united by the common faith. The... More

There really isn't much to see, just a monastery. Many shops on the way and some inexpensive cafes. Could not get into museum as the grumpy monk had no change.

The drive from Plovdiv is very nice as one sees some nice green hills and rugged topography. The Monastery itself is quite beautiful, but is somewhat disappointing compare to Rila. It was founded in 1083 by Prince Gregory Pakourianos. The Church of Mary was completed in 1604. There is a large dining hall which murals painted on all of the... More

The place is nice and beautiful. The church is old, this monastery is one with miracle icon of Holy Mary. Many people like this place, especially in the summer. Great for a walk in the mountains and picnic.
