Not a winery, but a place where their Madeira wines are stored and aged in oak barrels. They started making wine in 1850. The staff was very help and knowledgeable in answering questions and explaining there wines. You get 3 free, very good tastes.

Attractive space, smells lovely, well laid out with clear information. Somewhat spoilt by what I can only describe as snotty staff, one of whom shrieked at us when one of our party put too much wine in their shot glass. Woman behind the shop counter...More

We went to taste and buy wine. We tried the 15 year old wines and my wife liked the strongly wooded style which reminded her of whisky.

2.5 stars, rounded up though I am torn about that. My husband and I frequently taste and buy wine on trips, and we'd heard H&H makes the best Madeira. We lost track of time doing other things and got there at about 4:50 (they closed...More
