Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We caught the bus to Cabo Girao and then walked along the lavada path to Estreito de Camara de Lobos where we caught the bus back to Funchal. You walk down through the holiday park to find the steps down to the lavada which is not signed. The path was fine with great views.

We have no experience of other levada walks to compare with this one with but thoroughly enjoyed the day out. Start by catching a no 96 bus from Funchal to Estraito (2.75 euros one way, around 40 minutes). There is a signpost to show you where to begin close by. The walk then takes you along the narrow path next to the levada (irrigation channel) for 7 kms. It's all level and near the start you walk under grape vines and past small dwellings. Then the terrain winds around a large gorge for about 4 kms and the views at the end of this stage are stunning. In one or two places the path is too narrow but there is an alternative path marked by white posts for a few metres. It's a good idea to take a sandwich made of traditional Madeiran bread (very tasty) for your lunch. Near the end you have the option of climbing the steps to the viewpoint from the clifftop at Cabo Girao which is well worth doing. There is a bus back to Funchal from here as well.

I didn't walk the whole of the levada but started at Ecumeada and walked from there. This section of the walk is very beautiful, easy to follow and has some amazing views over mountains and valleys. It was peaceful and saw only a couple of other walkers and two little birds who came to the water to drink. The little cafe at Ecumeada serves drinks and simple food - good before starting starting and in January there was plenty of parking space by the side of the road. I didn't come across any scary bits and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

We walked from Estraita to Cabo Girao. Honestly, it was rather tedious, not the best, really just exercise. At Cabo Girao we could not find the bus stop, and finished up walking to Camara de lobos. trying.

This levada walk is picturesque and can be done in about 2.5-3 hours. We booked our tour the day before via our hotel. we did not need our own car; a van picked up all of the participants and dropped us off afterwards. The walk itself is pretty flat with a few steps here and there. There's a path that leads the entire way around the mountain. The views are exquisite. The nice thing about this walk in particular is that you get to see a mountainside village: small huts, locals working the land, etc. The locals also put out baskets with fresh fruits so you can leave a few cents and eat a snack along the way. A perfect walk for those who aren't in the best shape or have knee problems.

a very easy walk and really enoyable. Use strong shoes though as flip flops and not the best shoes to wear on this walk

Marella Dream Cruise, Levada walk from Funchal, Madeira commencing 9.30 a.m. for 4 hours.
Itinerary according to Marella: After about an hour's walk you will stop for refreshments and if you wish to continue you will walk for another 50 minutes. Then you will go to Camacha village, famous for its wickerwork and then return to Funchal for a spot of wine-tasting before returning to the ship.
Actual Itinerary 09.04.18: Driven straight to Camacha for half hour visit to see wickerwork factory. Toilets and refreshments available. Driven to Levada walk approx 11 a.m. Walked for about an hour, asked if anyone wanted to drop out no-one did (there were 14 of us). No refreshments and no toilet facilities in sight. Were told to use the trees if necessary!! 1 person did. Walk continued. Back to bus at 1.30 pm. Still no refreshments or toilets available. Drove back to Funchal and stopped for a photo opportunity over the bay/harbour and ship. Told we were then going to a Madeira Wine & Cake Shop but the booking for our group wasn't until 2 p.m. When we got to the shop I asked the guide if there were any toilet facilities. He pulled a face but asked the shop staff and they let my husband and myself use their staff toilet. On the way back to the ship the guide asked us not to mention that the booking had been late and that we had done the trip in a different order. We finally got back to the ship at 3pm FOR LUNCH! We had been without toilet facilities or refreshments since 11 a.m.Not very professional.

Unlike some of the other recent reviewers, we only walked a section of the Levada do Norte, starting from Boa Morte, parking at the O Pinheiro snack bar, and following walk #7 in Rolf Goetz's book of walks in Madeira. The walk goes towards the Espigão Tunnel. The views are stunning and the walk is easy except for some vertiginous sections in the second half. It was very quiet when we went so we were able to enjoy our surroundings and the calm quiet of the countryside. We would highly recommend it!

Bonjour.
merci

Going to Funchal very soon, keen to do Levada walk but definitely not got a head for heights especially sheer drops with no safety rail. Which is the best walk to do
Written 25 September 2016
Well this one 'levada del norte' is safe. The parts where there are sheer drops have an alternative route and I did notice a nr of new rails had been added. We did our walks with both our kids, 10 and 12 years old and had no problems anywhere.
Written 27 September 2016
Is it dangerous in parts. We completed the Pico d'Arreiras and Ribo hike, and though fantastic was bothered when the sheer drops had no wire "fence".So dont mind the dropsif some protection
