Playa La Francesa is a long sand beach located in La Graciosa Island, a small island next to Lanzarote. It is a very nice beach, where you can bath, sunbath, see views of cliffs of Lanzarote, relax or walk on the sand. A very pretty place. In fact, I only could see the beach from away, because I arrive here at evening after one day excursion in the island and I began by walk to go there, but I was tired. So, I expect to go there next time.

My wife and I visited La Graciosa, using the ferry from Orzola, specifically to visit this beach. Playa Francesa, to give it its local name, is in fact three beaches around a little cove and we used the middle one. It is about two miles from the harbour at Caleta de Sebo, where the ferry docks. It is a level walk, either along the sandy track or along the almost continuous shoreline.

We had read in reviews on other websites that once clear of the town naturism is accepted everywhere. On the way we weren't sure about stripping off, but once at the beach we relaxed into our birthday suits for the rest of the day. The sea was calm and I was able to enjoy snorkelling, seeing nine different species of fish in a fairly small area of the sea.

Later in the day a catamaran anchored off the right hand beach and shortly afterwards one anchored off our beach. The passengers were all ferried ashore for a couple of hours or so. When they left it all became peaceful again.

On the way back to the harbour we walked the first mile and a half before dressing and the few people who saw us didn't seem bothered by our nudity. Next time we'll walk to the beach nude.

There are no facilities at the beach, not even shade, so take everything that you are likely to need with you.

Note: You can walk here in 45 mins from the ferry stop in Caleta del Sabo - you don’t need to go on one of the catamaran tours to get here.

The whole island of La Graciosa is well worth a day of your time. Get the ferry from Orzola (2 ferry operators, every 30 mins, £20 return.) You can hire bikes to explore the island or walk to this beach. It’s a lovely easy walk. The beach is awesome - beautiful soft golden sand. The sea is crystal clear - we went snorkelling, plenty to see though the sea was colder than in Puerto del Carmen.

You need to take food and water with you - there’s nothing available outside of Caleta del Sabo.

With two Ferry companies operating every 30 minutes between then from Orzola, the
trip to La Graciosa is easy and a must! We took the BiosferaExpress which runs on the half hour (€20 adults and €11.50 children return) and it was a great ferry experience - with smiling, friendly crew offering sweets and cups of cold water to all passengers on both journeys. La Graciosa is beautiful and unspoilt. No Tarmac roads and very few people around. We took swimming costumes and spent a couple of hours on the nearest beach to the town - about twenty minutes walk from the ferry. The water was clear and beautiful for swimming. Lots of clean, golden sand for the kids to play with. There are cycles for hire and jeep tours available if you want to explore further. Most of the restaurants serve full meals so we bought sandwiches, crisps and drinks for 4 from the bakery - less than €13 in total!! A wonderful, restorative experience.

Having visited Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen just a few days before I convinced my family we should take a ferry ride out to La Graciosa and see this beach, especially as it looked so idyllic from the viewpoint at Mirador del Rio. I don't doubt the glowing reviews I'd read, but a couple of things to be aware of: first, check tide times - I think the tide was out when we visited meaning a rocky wade out to water deep enough for snorkeling. Second, if you plan to visit just this beach don't bother renting bikes. I'd expected to find a suitable track out to the beach but most of the route was sand meaning bikes had to be pushed. Take a 4x4 taxi instead or walk but beware, it's hot and you'll need plenty of sunscreen. I think a visit by boat/catamaran would be much more enjoyable but many don't seem to run on a Sunday when we went, hence the ferry and bike approach.

Francesa is idyllic - about two miles west of Caleta de Sebo across the sand, mostly on sand tracks. No facilities there apart from a series of low rock-walled shelters that previous visitors have built (Lanzarote is nearly always windy of course, and Graciosa is the same), but the sand is golden, the water shelves gently, there are plenty of rocks underwater to attract fish but it's also easy enough to get out into the water on a sandy bottom, and it's sheltered. One of the few downsides is that because it's so gorgeous, one of the big catamarans sails round from Caleta harbour daily, bringing 50 or more daytrippers round to the beach for a quick swim or just to sunbathe - or to go out on the inflatables and small kayaks that another boat also brings round daily. However all those interlopers are really only there from 1.00ish to around 3.30, and before and after that you'll probably have the beach to yourself along with only another dozen or so people who like you are staying on the island and have walked over from Caleta. If it really gets crowded, you can also walk another half a mile or so to the next delightful beach, at the foot of the Montana Amarilla. Choices, choices...

The beaches which you can walk to from the ferry port are quite stunning. This whole shoreline is quite amazing and well worth the ferry trip.
To close your eyes then open them makes one feel you have landed on a different planet.
