This is a wonderful day. Following tripadvisor recommendations, we booked ahead with Jacamar (go right to their website, but you will find you make your booking under the auspices of ArenalTours). One important advantage of this is that you go in a small boat (there...More

Mango, our boat driver, has a real eye for spotting wildlife and we managed to see howler monkies, sloths, whitefaced monkies, caymans, bats and countless birds all up close without it feeling intrusive. Such a lovely quiet day on the river.

Definitely get the guides and take the riverboat tour. They'll not only find animals you'd never see, they can tell you all about them. It's a bit of a trek from Fortuna, but they will stop along the way to see animals along the way.

We enjoyed our boat tour through the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. Our captain was good at spotting these animals. We saw monkeys, iguanas, sloths, many birds, turtles, crocs and many others. I felt safe all the time and the ride was quite relaxing.
