This might be better described as the Okahandja woodcraft re-sellers' market, as the items offered to sale are very similar and often identical. The vast majority of the vendors here seem to be resellers rather than the actual craftsmen. Still, there are some nice items and decent prices can be had with a bit of haggling. I would recommend offering 1/3 of what they are asking, then negotiate from there. As others mentioned, some of the vendors can be a bit pushy, but we did not find them to be aggressive during our visit. You just have to be very clear and firm regarding what you will or will not purchase, and what you are willing to pay. Don't be afraid to just walk away, since you can probably find similar items at the next stall. Overall not the best crafter's market I've ever seen, but still worth a stop.

This market is a must visit if you are looking for gifts for friends and family. If you are willing to ship items home the wood carvings and furniture are beautiful. The crafters are interesting to talk to and willing to share their stories.

This was nothing like I expected it to be. I thought it would be a large workshop space where you could watch craftsmen at work, ie carving and tour round and talk to a few. But no. It is a dirt street with a series of 'shops' (huts) that have pushy vendors. I found that many of them were selling the same thing. If you are on the lookout for wooden bowls or small animals this is your place! However, if you look hard - and by that I mean at least glancing at every hut - then you can find some very nice and unusual pieces. I bought a lovely one of the Big Five carved out of a single piece of tree trunk. In order to do all the huts in a short space of time I had to quickly glance inside then move on if it appeared to be the same old things. This greatly upset the sellers who were angry that I went in some huts but not theirs. Sometimes I went in one, picked up a piece to look further but then got an aggressive seller anxious for me not to leave without buying something. Overall, not a very pleasant experience. Be ruthless, walk down and look in them all but only go in if something catches your eye. Skilled shopping required! If this doesn't appeal then, actually, just go to the gift shop across the road (next to the cafe) and you can browse some nice items. I got a lovely carved running cheetah there that was so different from the standing poses in the market. Also a nice t-shirt shop next door to this.

Great Craft Market. At the exit of Okahandja direction Windhoek, opposite to a Shell filling station. Beautiful wooden carvings and baskets, but also numerous other craft pieces. Two dozen small shops. Make a tour first, then decide. Once you have selected a piece you wish to buy, ask for the price. Then start to haggle. Your first counteroffer should be half the price you were initially proposed then find mid ground. Negotiated prices are fair and the choice is great. Definitely worth a stop. We can recommend.
