- T S7 contributionsWorth a stopThis might be better described as the Okahandja woodcraft re-sellers' market, as the items offered to sale are very similar and often identical. The vast majority of the vendors here seem to be resellers rather than the actual craftsmen. Still, there are some nice items and decent prices can be had with a bit of haggling. I would recommend offering 1/3 of what they are asking, then negotiate from there. As others mentioned, some of the vendors can be a bit pushy, but we did not find them to be aggressive during our visit. You just have to be very clear and firm regarding what you will or will not purchase, and what you are willing to pay. Don't be afraid to just walk away, since you can probably find similar items at the next stall. Overall not the best crafter's market I've ever seen, but still worth a stop.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 September 2023

- dianedinkyDunfermline, United Kingdom1,346 contributionsSkilled shopping needed to get the gemsThis was nothing like I expected it to be. I thought it would be a large workshop space where you could watch craftsmen at work, ie carving and tour round and talk to a few. But no. It is a dirt street with a series of 'shops' (huts) that have pushy vendors. I found that many of them were selling the same thing. If you are on the lookout for wooden bowls or small animals this is your place! However, if you look hard - and by that I mean at least glancing at every hut - then you can find some very nice and unusual pieces. I bought a lovely one of the Big Five carved out of a single piece of tree trunk. In order to do all the huts in a short space of time I had to quickly glance inside then move on if it appeared to be the same old things. This greatly upset the sellers who were angry that I went in some huts but not theirs. Sometimes I went in one, picked up a piece to look further but then got an aggressive seller anxious for me not to leave without buying something. Overall, not a very pleasant experience. Be ruthless, walk down and look in them all but only go in if something catches your eye. Skilled shopping required! If this doesn't appeal then, actually, just go to the gift shop across the road (next to the cafe) and you can browse some nice items. I got a lovely carved running cheetah there that was so different from the standing poses in the market. Also a nice t-shirt shop next door to this.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 6 January 2024
- Mathias SBonstetten, Switzerland381 contributionsGreat craft marketGreat Craft Market. At the exit of Okahandja direction Windhoek, opposite to a Shell filling station. Beautiful wooden carvings and baskets, but also numerous other craft pieces. Two dozen small shops. Make a tour first, then decide. Once you have selected a piece you wish to buy, ask for the price. Then start to haggle. Your first counteroffer should be half the price you were initially proposed then find mid ground. Negotiated prices are fair and the choice is great. Definitely worth a stop. We can recommend.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 June 2024

After buying some souvenirs, for which I knowingly paid about double of what it costs elsewhere, as a sort of charity, I was asked whether I could give some food for their hungry children. Next they were begging for money and afterwards for clothes and shoes. I realize that I am privileged and much better off, but this was not a pleasant shopping experience.

This market place locates opposite site of gas station, southern entrance to the city of Okahandja, close to B1. There are almost everything which can be made of wood. Excellent place to have souvenir from Namibia and lots of cheaper than in real shops, but you need to bargain. Start at least half of the price.

The Okahandja Mbangura Woodcarvers Craft Market is a great place to visit if you are looking for some souvenirs from Namibia. It's a short drive off the B1, easy to find, and there are various stalls offering a wide variety of curios, not only wood carvings. During my trip across Namibia, this craft market was one of the best we visited. It is good to note, as far as I could see, cash-only transactions were the standard. In summary, while the market is not located directly on a main road, it is definitely worth a visit.

We stopped with the intention of picking up some gifts to take home, but it was impossible to look at anything or discuss possibilities without being continually harangued. At one point my wife and I were suurrounded by five or six men far too close to our personal space. We decided to leave. One seller followed us across the road continuing to try to get us to buy. I don't mind haggling, but I need to decide what I want to buy first and this was just too uncomfortable.

Very handy that all shops are next to each other. It means that you can easily compare the quality and prices before actually buying.
We experience friendly sales people, not too pushy. And by those who pushed too much we left immediately.

We stopped here to have look and to eat something on our way to the airport. There are a lot of things to buy if you compare it to other places where they sell local products e.g. along the road. I think these shops sell more original things, often they’re made on the spot. A big advantage here is large variety.

We came here on a Sunday morning and spent a couple of hours walking around and buying souvenirs.
They have loads of interesting and beautiful woodcraft but you'll need to bargain on everything and tell them that if they harass you then you won't visit their shop.
We told them that we like to explore in peace and that we will go through each shop in order so they left us alone.
I find this place to be cheaper than Windhoek

Driving in you cannot fail to see the amazing carvings, some huge.
But next you notice the hovering stall holders & consider if you are prepared to "run the gauntlet", its a shame because they really are special. maybe someone could educate stall holders to just let people brouse without harrassment.
I was happy to look from the good coffee shop opposite
