As of April, they were doing construction on the road that directly accesses the viewpoint from the Lagoa do Canario route. You can still make it to the viewpoint if you either park somewhere and walk a little bit or if you go through Sete Cidades back to the EN1-1A and take the EN9-1A road that's near the Miradouro da Vigia das Baleias das Feteiras. Also if the weather is bad, it can clear up later in the day so don't give up.

This is one of the best Miradouro’s for taking in the two main lakes of the Caldeira das Sete Cidades. Its position above Lagoa Verde with Lagoa Azul beyond allows you to view both lakes from a vertical perspective and are more likely to be able to see the different blue and green colouring of the two lakes. It also benefits from having an off road car park but it can get swamped in high season and there is a 20 minute limit, which is perfectly fine for jumping out and taking some photo’s but not if you want to do a longer walk.

The Miradouro da Vista do Rei is truly incredible, probably the best-known panoramic viewpoint on the island of São Miguel, which in turn overlooks an equally famous place: the Lagoa das Sete Cidades 🏞. After having already gone to the latter that same morning for a kayak excursion 🛶, we then returned to the area in the afternoon to admire 👀 this suggestive body of water 🏞 from a different perspective. Arriving on site at 4.45pm, we parked the car 🚘 at the nearby rest area 🅿️ and set off 🚶🏻♂️🚶🏻♀️ towards the miradouro. Literally breathtaking at a glance 👁 appreciable from here, essentially the same chosen for the cover images of guides 📙, books 📚 and brochures on the Azores. Framing every glimpse, the omnipresent hydrangeas with their splendid colors. The panoramic terrace is also well looked after, thanks to the stylized wooden parapets. A beautiful tiled didactic panel was also placed on site 🪧. It should be noted that, right in front, the Monte Palace Hotel 🏨 stands majestically, an abandoned hotel which has itself become an attraction of great interest. In this sense, an Urbex experience is a must and we did not miss it. Definitely RECOMMENDED stop 👍.

One of the many viewpoints on the island of São Miguel that is really worth visiting. If the weather is good, it offers a good view of Lagoa das Sete Cidades, one of the most beautiful on the entire island. Don't miss this viewpoint

The name of the site Vista do Rei speaks for itself. The view of Sete Cidades from here is truly Royal. The best in San Miguel. We reached this observation deck on foot from the town of Sete Cidades, as we arrived by bus. Most tourists come in rented cars. During the tourist season, it is full of tourists, but almost everyone is jostling within 20 meters of the site. You can go down a little down the dirt road on foot: the views will be the same, and there will be few people.

Magnificent view of the lakes.
You have to go there early to avoid all the tourists and to find a place.
We did the hike from this viewpoint to go down to Sete Cidades but we saw nothing more than what we see from the viewpoint.
To go back to Vista Do Rey we took a taxi (10€). To get it: in the town you have to go towards the church and opposite the bar there is the taxi place. He comes by once an hour and if necessary his telephone numbers are at the bar.

Did a mountain bike ride around the entire caldera, started and ended at the MTB place not too far from the viewpoint. Definitely worth to do that ride, around 30km, 700m climb, various lookouts and great different perspectives. Requires solid MTB skills, but not expert level. Wonderful morning around the caldera!

If its a sunny day, expect plenty of crowds but if you go beyond the standard viewing platform you will find additional spots! If you go later in the afternoon the green lake may be shaded by the ridge behind and not catch all of the sun. Amazing view!

This is a must do on a trip to Sao Miguel. Make sure you've got enough days on the island to see this on a clear or at least semi clear day. This is a popular place, be prepared for crowds. There are several different parking lots and bathrooms.
If you're agile, you can go to the top of the abandoned hotel. The views from up there are even better. But, you are trespassing and it's definitely not a place I would bring small children.
This is a jaw dropping view and one you won't see every day. Snap a few photos, then just stand in awe.

There are now two parking lots, the one to the left of the view point is for longer duration parking if you are doing hikes. The Azores website has hiking maps/walking trails for the island. There are a few hiking options depending on how long you want to wander. As with all hikes, bring sturdy shoes for this area, food and water. There are restrooms at the viewpoint.
