- TanjarMansfield, United Kingdom38 contributionsGreat peaceful classy hotelWhat a lovely hotel. In a very quiet location but the perfect place for a chilled out relaxing holiday. Clean and modern with a touch of class! Branded drinks as well!! We stayed in room 534. The rooms were spacious and the bed was HUGE! Our only complaint with the room was a lack of drawers but otherwise there was a huge wardrobe with shelves. We did the 25 Fonts walk, this is NOT a mild and moderate walk as the guide books would have you believe, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. We used the taxis across the road to get there and back which is a cheaper way and totally reliable. A day in Funchal is a must. If you are going to do the basket toboggan please bear in mind that it’s cash payment only! We used the bus from the hotel to get to Funchal. Finally, massive praise goes to the reception staff!! So helpful and knowledgeable! We would definitely recommend!!! 👌Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 November 2023
- Anne HCowes, United Kingdom58 contributionsYou must spend some time here! This beach of imported Moroccan sand is definitely worth a few hours of your time. The water is clear, and warm. We visited in late November and early December and enjoyed swimming in warm water in a safe harbour environment. You can see the silver fish you share the water with, and some amazing red crabs on the stones around the harbour. The only downside for me is that smokers continue to leave their cigarettes ends in the sand, rather than use the frequent rubbish bins. Perhaps this is different during high season? Small bars and Cafes meet whatever food you fancy. The toilet facilities are cleaned regularly and appear to be open from early morning to late at night. This beach is a “must-visit” on the list of things to do in Madeira.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 December 2023

However, the town has everything you need, some shops, restaurants, big supermarket, Marina, etc. It's perfect for an afternoon/evening swim if you're living in the area. Parking can be an issue. However provides a lovely safe place to swim in the sea, especially if you have youngsters. Beach is busy but has some great bars, shops etc near by. Nice place to swim or snorkel.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 June 2024

Calheta Beach is a good opportunity to get at dip in the sea around Madeira. Most of the beaches on the island are rocky or with pebble stones - and the ocean is wild and often somewhat dangerous … but Calheta Beach is sandy and protected from the waves.
The beach is not the prettiest place on Earth, but who cares as long as the purpose is to get a dip and maybe an icecream or a snack at the nearby restaurant…?
There are (paid) parking spaces on the road above the beach - and (free) toilets beside the beach.

Lovely beach! We stayed in Calheta and spent a few hours here soaking in the warm weather.
Sun loungers are 3.50 euro for one and 5.50 euro for 2 and an umbrella and well worth the money although you can just plonk a towel down if you like.
There are two sides to the beach and the sea area is protected with a wall so its very calm if you want a swim.
There's also a little restaurant very close and toilets so you have everything you need for the day!
Lots of parking along the roadside also for a few euros.

The beach is very safe because it is surrounded by an artificial lagoon . So you don't really experience the direct force of the ocean. However the water will rise at tidal waves. But still safer then shores on the open sea.

By now we were seeing one beach or one mirodouro after another. This one had a decent commercial area next to the beach. I left the beach area and found a busy Pingo Doce supermarket. I bought tins of sardines, tuna, and octopus at fair prices. Pingo's own brand of tins were really a great buy. I also bought piri piri, poncha drink, and Madeira wine.

This beach is not natural and is like a man made pool out of ocean water. It’s super crowded (At least in July) . The stretch of man made beach is very small and there’s nothing to write home about. I drive an hour to get to this beach and wasted a beautiful day . I left without even taking a dip in the ocean . Super disappointed ☹️

We stayed here for a week end Feb/early March.
Delighted with our stay. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Buffet-style high-quality food with an immense choice.
Our room was well equipped and spacious with a terrace and sea view. (Well worth paying a little extra for)
Thank you to the Director and all the staff.
A bientot!

Can you simply come here for a day at the beach if you are not staying at the hotel?

We went to beautiful Calheta Beach while on our organized "West tour of Madeira". (Short stop)
There is an artificial! but superb, sand beach (exceptional for Madeira) and also a nice, but small beachwalk 🤗
Clean, chill, ....
We enjoyed poncha/local drink and icecream on the terrace of Essencia do Atlantico...
As far as we understand it's a "public place/beach", not for hotel guests only
Calheta is however kind of "far away" .... from Funchal ...
1 day at Calheta beach sounds great 👍
Enjoy 🌞

Hi - we've booked 1 of the 6 suites. Has anyone stayed in them and any advice? Ideally looking to be located on a high floor with clear pool/beach view - any specific feedback would be welcomed.
Thanks

I read on one review you can request the use of a kettle, is this correct. Or do i need to take my own travel kettle?

We are staying at Calheta Beach Hotel wanting to know the prices of Golden Virginia tobacco or Amber Leaf rolling tobacco. Is it better to buy at airport or is there a local shop.
Thanks going in October

You will find a supermarket across the road in a small mall. Opposite is a small trinket shop which sells (limited choice but very good price) cigs behind till. I pre-ordered cigs to take home. A lot cheaper than anywhere else i found. Enjoy your hol. You are in a great spot. Whale/dolphin watching from marina next door is a must. X

Hi, is the sea at Calheta Beach warm enough to swim in at this time of year?
Written 6 April 2017
We swam in the sea. It was chilly but once you're in it's ok. It was actually warmer than the hotel pool
Written 13 April 2017
You can go by bus. It’s cheap
