First of all, you need a car to get here. I walked from the hotel but I can't really recommend it since you need your wits and balance in order to navigate to the finish. But the trek is well worth it, brilliant scenery, nice...More
This was our first and only levada walk while on our holiday (unfortunately the bad weather made all mountain walks foggy and inaccessible). It was inspiring to see the lush nature, breathe the freshest air and enjoy amazing scenery. The tunnels were fun as well....More
There were some narrow parts to the trail, but it was easy to follow and flat. Along the way there was beautiful scenery. About 6 miles including some walking around Ilha.
We got took a taxi to the start and arranged for the same cab...More
This is a nice walk. A bit difficult to find the starting point, when you are on your own. Crowded, even in August after the holiday season. Some parts are quite steep, some parts are quite small. Has nice views and small tunnels for which...More
Such lush vegetation clinging to the walls of the mountains! An exciting walk along some very narrow paths along the levadas. Some great tunnels that a flashlight is needed for (mind your head- mine took a beating despite the flashlight!) Despite some cloud cover, I...More

Just take a taxi to the start of the walk (and ask the driver to come and fetch you 5 hours later). Take a picnic. There is no way you can get lost on the path. You can organise it by yourselves. We didn't meet or get in touch with any guides. Better ask tourist office info.
Bus runs to Santana and then you would need taxi as you wouldn't want to waste time walking on the road when the levada is long in itself. You would also need taxi back to Santana and bus. A hired car is best option.
