Although we had been to Madeira before it was nice to be able to see these traditional houses again. We were staying in a nearby hotel so it was just a short walk away.

A trip to Santana is a must do when in Madeira but manage your expectations ahead of going. The main cluster of Casas Tipicas are in a small area of Santana, have been renovated and are very much geared at tourists, having been converted into shops. They are beautiful and rather unique but you won't have the place to yourself as it really is just tourists who come here. While you are in Santana however, its worth taking a stroll around the town to see other examples of casas tipicas which are lived in by locals.

I think I saw mainly coachloads of German tourists than I saw the actual houses. Crikey. Went at midday on the way back from another walk, and hit it at it's peak I think. It *is* interesting to see, but man there's a lot of people. Would recommend going early or late if you want a moment of peace.
