A trip to Santana is a must do when in Madeira but manage your expectations ahead of going. The main cluster of Casas Tipicas are in a small area of Santana, have been renovated and are very much geared at tourists, having been converted into shops. They are beautiful and rather unique but you won't have the place to yourself as it really is just tourists who come here. While you are in Santana however, its worth taking a stroll around the town to see other examples of casas tipicas which are lived in by locals.…

Def worth a visit, the houses are very well taken cared of. One is the Tourist office, other sells typical products etc etc,

Such cute houses, they were beautiful to admire, buy some souvenirs from, and take pictures of! Definitely a must see on the northern coast

I think I saw mainly coachloads of German tourists than I saw the actual houses. Crikey. Went at midday on the way back from another walk, and hit it at it's peak I think. It *is* interesting to see, but man there's a lot of people. Would recommend going early or late if you want a moment of peace.…
