About
Behind the Botanic Gardens is Mount Whitfield Conservation Park, home to the Red and Blue Arrow Trails. These two linked tracks ascend the slopes of Mount Whitfield. The Red Arrow loop trail (1.5Km return) beginning at Collins Avenue, climbs 100m in elevation through rainforest, Eucalypt forest and grasslands to a lookout above the Cairns International Airport offering views over the city and out to Green Island. A short link trail ascends a further 50 metres to another lookout from where the Blue Arrow loop trail (4.5Km return) commences. The Blue Arrow trail takes you through mainly rainforest to an elevation of 300m. About half way around, a short side track will take you to a lookout on the summit of Mt Lumley Hill where you get views along the coast to the north of Cairns.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My husband and I completed the red arrow walk to Mount Whitfield on a recent trip to Cairns. It is near the Botanical Gardens, so our first time included a beautiful wander around the immaculate rainforest gardens. Location is a 10min bus trip from Cairns central bus depot.
Well worth a visit. Lots of amazing rainforest plants and trees on the walk, including birds and the secretive rainforest kangaroo which we were lucky enough to see on our second walk experience!

Great walk located behind shop at Botanical Gardens. Quite strenuous - lots of stairs both up & down but a great view from the top. Well worth it. Plenty of rest locations along the way if you wish to take it slow

Good short walk which is hard work due to all the stairs. Well sign posted. The view up the top was worth the effort. An be busy in the mornings.

Went here after work for a walk - regretted it after 5 minutes then felt energised when we got to the top of the walk. Will feel it tomorrow in my legs - but need to do it regularly

This little loop (1.5k) is a great walk or jog with great views of the airport and Cairns from the top! At the bottom there is parking, water bubblers and bicycle racks. You can see some great wildlife too and do as many laps as you like!

Nice location for a strenuous walk/run to top of the ridge. (only 1.5km) The Red trail links to blue and yellow trails. Need to do the blue (longer trail next time. Good view of airport and the Cairns inlet.

We'd been on a boat for two days visiting the reef and the Red Arrow walk was a perfect antidote to sea legs and restlessness. My wife did the Blue walks and other walks, too, and I did two laps on the Red Arrow.

I think the shortest of the three walks here and definitely the steepest. Worth it for the view to the top. Very busy route with people walking / jogging /running to the top.

It's a nice walk, but quite busy and never really feels like a natural setting. Probably deserves 3 and a half stars but I'm not willing to say that it is a 4 star experience.

Great up hill walk/jog - extended walk available (blue arrow) or if short on time you can just do the red arrow track!
Beautiful scenery and views from the top of the Cairns airport landing strip / beach and sea and more!
Bonus is Botanic Gardens next door - so can extend your walk through the stunning garden or stop by the cafe to refuel!
