January may not be the best time of year to visit this place, but we were very glad that we took the time. We did not get into the building except for the small museum and gift shop. Had a very enjoyable time exploring the grounds and gardens. Wonderful old trees are shown off to their best when not cloaked... More

This is a nice local castle which is part of Royal Roads University now. Good grounds with great sea views.

There are two attractions here: the gardens and the "castle." As others have noted, the castle can be close for a variety of reasons (weddings, classes, etc.), so if that is the reason for your visit, you should call first. Our interest was to see the gardens, and they are always open. Obviously, what will be in bloom will depend... More

We stopped on our way from Victoria to Sooke. I wouldn't make the drive just for this attraction but was a pleasant stop on he route. We just missed the guided tour of the grounds and didn't want to wait around for he next one (every couple hours) so we did the self guided walk of the gardens. They are... More

Steeped in history, near the sea yet tucked into the natural environment, the gardens simply take your breath away. One can see what attracts people to the this place over and over again, a stunning respite from the din of daily urban life. Walking in the gardens helps you achieve a sense of tranquility as your senses are overcome by... More

We enjoyed the tour of the castle. The view from the castle was beautiful. The gardens are beautiful to walk through. The gardens are a peaceful way to spend a couple hours.

Walk the beautifully kept grounds for a peaceful experience. Once owned by a coal tycoon it was turned into Royal Roads Military College. It is now the campus of Royal Roads University. The Japanese gardens and ponds are well maintained and are sure to provide a peaceful experience.

We got here when it opened and were able to see the beautiful Italian garden before it closed at 11 for a private wedding. We had the place nearly to ourselves and could take our time taking pictures of the flowers up close. The rose garden and Japanese gardens are also nice. We didn't tour the interior. I got better... My 2 daughters and I strolled through the Grounds for about 3 hours, we could have stayed longer! Different types of Gardens and plenty of Forest to hike through. We did not go in the school since classes were in session.

We enjoyed our visit to Hatley Park National Historic Site. I would encourage you to go to enjoy the historic, castle-like home and the sprawling, beautiful gardens. But read the website carefully on the matter of costs. And be aware that there will be a modest parking fee (C$1.00/hour) in addition. The website language suggested to me that the castle... More
