This is a treasure, a small cave with paintings dating back at least 10,000 years. Sonia is a multilingual expert on the cave and its history. She is quite easy to reach and writes back immediately if you email her. Go on the website, arrange...More

We are so glad we included a trip to the Escoural caves while in the Alentejo. The tour takes 45min - 1 hour and is led by a very knowledgeable, fun and welcoming guide, Sonia. The images and engravings have faded significantly over the 10,000-30,000...More

You need to call ahead to book a visit. Tours are limited to 10 people twice a day in the off-season, four times a day during the high season. The guide, who speaks excellent English, does an outstanding job of offering as much information as...More

We arrived at the Escoural Caves to find the entrance gate locked. It appears you either need to call in advance and make an appointment to be let in, or you need to go to the tourist center in town and have them let you...More

We are visiting Portugal from Massachusetts. We came to Évora after seeing Óbidos, which was very charming and beautiful. The town of Évora was a bit disappointing by comparison, but we spent the afternoon today at the Caves of Escoural which has made the stop...More

A little known and little visited cave containing prehistoric paintings and scratchings. If you are into this kind of thing, this is a very compact and lovely cave. The paintings don't match Altamira, but are worth the visit. Very nice animal drawings. What a surprise,...More
