Mammalapuram,(Mahabalipuram) has a lot to offer, which would pave way to the history/civilisation and a lot more to think. When you are here you forget your time and go on to memories. Great place to see all the Sculptures and do visit the temple inside the mandapam

You will starting your heritage journey from Krishna Mandapam. Krishna lifting the gowardhan parbat is depicted through a sculptor. This is a must visit archaeological site when in Mamallapuram. There is no entry fee to sew this monument. The crowd will be more on weekends and holidays (best to visit on weekdays as it will be less crowded).Carry sunglasses, caps/umbrella and water bottles while visiting Mahabalipuram and avoid summer season.

Stone carving architecture at this famous Mahabalipuram site, just beside Arjuna's penance.
Try when the light is just right with a low raking Sun,to get the most of the stone carvings. Harsh top Sun will have deeper shadows.
A magnificent piece of old architecture which is thronged by tourists the whole year round.

All of this tour was done by me on 10th April,2016 as I was in Chennai for a Joint Replacement conference. Went to the spot by a hired car , Roughly 38 miles from Chennai

This is located in just adjacent to Arjuna's Peanance. It is one of the most popular 7th and 8th century stone carvings at Mahabalipuram.

Krishna Mandapa was carved out in 700AD. It has series of carvings depicting the story of Lord Krishna. Krishna lifts up the mountain "Govardhan" to shelter his followers from a storm/Indra. Another picture depicts milking of cow with calf beside.

Amazing rock art!

Krishna Mandapam is south of Panch Pandava caves. Beautiful carved scene of one episode from Krishna's life that is lifting of Govardhana Giri to protect cowherds from wrath of God Indra.
Walls of this mandapam has few interesting carvings as
-- Lifting of govardhana giri by Krishna with left hand, underneath his brother Balrama &fellow
shepherds ,cows
-- A cowherd milking a cow licking her calf
-- A cowherd carrying a tiffin box
-- A lion with human face
-- A carved sculpture showing elephant as well as cow
Interesting to watch

This site was discovered in the 19th century by the British. When the Moghuls invaded, the local people left this site to the jungle and just moved, rather than have their sacred site violated. It's a world heritage site for good reason. The exquisite low-relief carvings offer a vision of idealized Hindu life, with men and women equal and animals healthy and loved. The sense of humor and artistry is unique.

If you are planning a beach stay for a few days and want a few old temples thrown in, then this is the place for you. Take note though...that all the attractions can be seen in a half day, so if you are staying.... it's more about the beach than the temple carvings.

Two of the temples have entry fees.

The Shore Temple is the most famous and in a way the most disappointing. It looks quite appealing at a distance but then on closer observation the wind and rain and sea have washed away most of the distinct features of the carvings.

The other location on the ticket is the "Five Ratnas" and that is a bit south of town. These are a series of nearly completed temples that are more interesting and better preserved (but...unfinished) than the shore temple.

The best locations are the "free" carvings in the center of town on the collection of massive boulders there. Wandering up and down the paths and rock hewn stair cases is very worth it. That is probably the best part of all the attractions.

Arjuna's Penance is striking as is the giant "butter ball" boulder balanced precariously on the edge of the rock slope.

The guides can be annoying, but generally if you ignore them, they will go away quickly.

This impressive monument is next to Arjuna's Penance and Krishna's butter ball. The carvings are quite exquisite, but it is a bit dark inside, so flash for photography is a must.
