Loved walking around the ruins, free of charge however a box is situated to make a donation to help with the upkeep. Sits alongside the most beautiful pebble beach. And the most magnificent views. Information on the castle is posted on site. A must see if in the area

My father and I drove out here as part of our tour around Inishowen to visit castles and ruins associated with the Doherty/O’Dochartaigh family. The road out is narrow but doable, and at the very end there is a small parking lot and some informational signs. The castle itself is in a state of disrepair, but the beauty of the area around it and the ability to explore what’s left of the ruins (carefully, and at your own risk) made it well worth the trip!

The castle is a few miles off the route to Malin Head but worth a quick visit for a great photo opportunity.

Amazing views, a short walk with slight incline which may have difficult terrain for someone who is not steady on their feet. The castle cannot be accessed as there is a gate with a lock

There are several O'Doherty castles in County Donegal. This particular O'Doherty castle is basicly ruins adjacent to a farm. It was a short stop enroute to visiting the famine village.

Carrickabraghy Castle is of significant importance to both local and national Irish history, and is worthy of a stop if you're in the area. No, you wouldn't make a day out of a visit, but it could be a quick 15-20 minute diversion on the way to somewhere else (perhaps the Daogh Famine Village). The coastline that the ruin sits on is lovely, as is the drive back to the site.
Getting to the castle is pretty straight forward. As you approach the area, you'll go through a small residential area; parking is basically a strip of land just beyond the last set of buildings.
The draw here is really the history of the castle and not the castle itself. That said, now that we've seen it, there really isn't a reason for a return visit.

Known as 'the castles' by the locals, carrickabraghy castle is free to walk around, a donations box is at the bottom of the castle. The views around castle looks over sea and pollan bay, which you can walk to, 2miles. It is exposed at the top, wrap up.

This is simply s beautiful location on the edge of the Atlantic. Travel through Inishowen, through Ballyliffen and on towards the Famine Village. After visiting there head back towards the edge of the shire and look out towards Glashedy Island. The castle is a small but interesting historic site and there are good information notices at the site. The real treat is the view - Glashedy, Urris Hills, Malin Head and the Wild Atlantic. Also locally known as a good shoreline for gathering mussels and seaweeds. Ask locally for advice.

We all enjoyed this site. It has a wild deserted appeal with the ocean waves crashing onto the nearby rocks. There is a great blowhole that tends to erupt with spray every few moments. The site is locked and under repair but it is still accessible and worth a visit. It is required to walk a short distance over some uneven rocky land so care is required. We all enjoyed the site. Very wild and untouched. No amenities or facilities on this deserted castle just a sign with some details of the history of the site.

This is one of the best locations in the world, there is not much of the castle remaining, just a small tower that you can't enter, but it is worth coming here for the views.

Hi, my last name is McLaughlin which I believe is a modernization of Mac Lochlainn. I received a lead through some ancestry work that Carrickabraphy Castle once belonged to the Mac Lochlainn clan but I only see limited references to this. Can you please clarify any relationship between the castle and the Mac Lochliann's.
