This small historic church in a once-tranquil village is a victim of its own fame. We were staying in the Songtsam Lodge in the village and took the opportunity to visit the church in the evening for a service. We are not Catholics but a fellow traveller told us that while the service loosely followed a mass, part of it was in Tibetan and part in Chinese. The Tibetan part was more like the chanting... Unless you have your own car, you will have to hire one, then drive the hour or so from Deqin to the church. It's an interesting building, but there's not much to it. Photos are not permitted inside. If you decide to go - do try to call ahead to make sure it's open. I had a bit of a... More

Strange to find a catholic church in the middle of rural China. Visited on Christmas day and the locals were having a 24 hour party, they were kind, generous and lots of fun.

The new road and bridge take a bit away but without them access would be difficult i guess it's the cost of development and the people should have their... More

Cizhong village combines distinctly chinese architectural elements with christian symbols and is a such a curiosity. The bell tower, though having a chinese roof with upturned eaves resembles very much european specimens. Make sure to call ahead and check if father Yao is around to show you the beautifully decorated interior. Take a close look at the lintels of the... More
