I visited the Alchi Choskhor on my last day in Ladakh. It's a monastic complex known for its unique style. I'd forgotten to carry my wallet & couldn't buy a ticket to go inside the Sumtseg. The Sumtseg is built in the Kashmiri style while the rest of the complex is in the Tibetan style. I roamed around the complex & ducked inside the Vairochana Shrine to gape at the paintings. These are the oldest surviving paintings in Ladakh. The complex also houses a number of chortens. At the starting of the complex, you will see a chalkboard with the words, ‘The original walking stick of Lama Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo’. Lama Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo is said to have performed the miracle of building the Alchi Chhoskor overnight!…

After your way through a cosy touristmarket you will find a pearl: the old monastry of Alchi with centuries old buddha's and bodisattva's in very old temples. Go!!

I’ve been to Ladakh now and seen a number of different monasteries. Each one is unique and although Thiskey is for many reasons my favourite experience this comes close. It has variety and a number of interesting parts to visit. It also benefits from one of the few monasteries that you can go to without the feeling you are scaling another Himalayan mountain.…
