- Joanne T4 contributionsAmazing waterfall in wet season. The water was still raging down the waterfall given it was the wet season and after cyclone jasper. I would be disappointed in the view of the waterfall in dry season. Make sure you get off at each stop and do a tour at red peak to learn more about the rain forest. Kuranda itself was fall of tacky souvenirs but lunch was great at the Kuranda hotel, reasonably priced for families.Hi Joanne, It has been a spectacular time to see the mighty Barron Falls in flood lately, and it certainly puts on a show in our summer months. However, we are lucky to experience a tropical climate here in the ancient rainforest with rain falling year round and the view of the Barron river and falls is impressive in any season. Thanks for mentioning our Ranger Guided Tour at Red Peak, these are included in the experience and really do offer a greater insight into the stories of the rainforest and a deeper understanding of the environment as told by our Rangers. Thanks for sharing your amazing experience with us and we look forward to welcoming you back again. - michael cMelbourne, Australia26 contributionsExcellent rideLoved it . It was great it well worth it . I suggest and that’s what I should’ve done . Instead of driving up, cos we had to check late to our hotel like 3:00pm so we drove up and saw the village , it’s windy Rd , it’s beautiful but the driver have to keep eye on the Rd at all times , and you won’t see anything, I suggest park the car at Smithfield at the start of the Skyrail , then go all the way to the village (I won’t spoil yr journey so I won’t say much ) take yr time have lunch in one of the bistro and a nice cold beer , the rest I leave to yr imagination,Greetings from the rainforest, Thanks for your excellent 5 star review. We are thrilled to hear you loved our experience and have some great tips to share for future travellers. We highly recommend making your way to our Smithfield Terminal (unless staying in the Atherton Tablelands area) to commence your experience, there is ample free parking for all vehicle types with departure times and itineraries to suit your schedule. After commencing the Skyrail experience you will arrive in Kuranda, the village in the rainforest, where visitors can spend time exploring, shopping, dining and much more before returning to conclude your ancient rainforest experience. Thanks for sharing these great tips and we hope to welcome you back again soon. - Elizabeth MOkinawa Prefecture, Japan4 contributionsSkyRailBeautiful aerial view of the rainforest with the opportunity to meet other travelers and exchange travel recommendations while in the air. Two stops along the way: Beautiful views of the Barron Gorge and a short guided Rainforest Tour with Ash. 2-3 hours in Kuranda is enough time to see all the tourist attractions. LOTS of shopping available there. For non-shoppers, would recommend the Kuranda Koala Gardens and Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. Can easily pack snacks or buy food there. Definitely bring water during those hot days!Greetings from the rainforest Elizabeth, Thanks for your wonderful review. We are so happy to hear you had such a great experience with us and made travel friends along the way! Thanks for mentioning Ranger Ash, our Rangers are the story tellers of the ancient rainforest and they offer a deeper understanding into this fascinating area, their tours are a must do! - Lexie GLondon, United Kingdom68 contributionsSimply Sensational!Wow!! The best attraction we have done in Australia! Incredible piece of engineering construction to allow us to see a bird’s eye view of the equatorial rainforest and the falls on Stop 1 going down. A little scary if you don’t like heights but very safe & the staff extremely professional and friendly. Highly recommended!Hi Lexi, Greetings from the ancient rainforest. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed exploring the Wet Tropics World Heritage area with us and found us to be the best attraction in Australia. The average time guests spend in a gondola is 15 minutes between our rainforest mid-stations and our staff are on hand to assist guests at any point should they require it. At Red Peak guests can meander the boardwalk loop to the lookout, join a complimentary Ranger Guided Tour and unlock the secrets of this ancient landscape, or learn the story through evolution in the Rainforest Discovery Zone. At Barron Falls guests can stroll another boardwalk loop leading to The Edge Lookout for panoramic views of the falls and deep gorge below, and learn about the rich biodiversity in the Rainforest Interpretive Centre. - Sarang3 contributionsBeautiful views of the oldest rainforestThe view was beautiful from the cableway all the way through! Unfortunately due to the rain the train was out of commission, so we had to take the cableway both ways, but it was an excellent experience regardless. The staff was kind and helpful, and provided free umbrellas to use at each of the stops along the way up to Kuranda. The tour guide was also very knowledgeable and friendly. You also get beautiful views of Barron/Din Din Falls, even on a misty and foggy day!Hi Sarang, Greetings from the ancient rainforest! We are pleased to hear you enjoyed gliding smoothly in your gondola over the Wet Tropics World Heritage area with us, and took the opportunity to stop and discover more at the forest floor of Red Peak / Guriguri Bunda: and Barron Falls / Dindin. Our complimentary Ranger Guided Tour at Red Peak/ Guriguri Bunda: is a must do! Our Rangers are the storytellers o this ancient landscape and they love noting more than sharing their vast knowledge with our guests. Due to adverse weather the Scenic Railway (Queensland Rail) did temporarily suspend operations but we can wait for them to be welcoming guests again very soon. - BkbakTempe, Arizona1,404 contributionsNice optionThis cable car soars over the rain forest making two stops along the way. We were advised to get off and explore at the stops on the way up which was a good suggestion. The first cable ride is 10 minutes long and takes one to an area where one can walk around and learn about the rain forest. The second cable ride has a stop at Baron Falls at which one can walk around for views of the falls. It then continues to Kuranda. We had booked the Gold train for the way up but it was cancelled for the week we were there because of a chance of landslides due to the massive amount of rains. All the employees are pleasant and helpful. One can stay in Kuranda and then return via the cable. It is possible to get to Kuranda via a road but it was very nice to soar over the rain forest.Hi Bkbak, Greetings from the ancient rainforest. - Mary BCanterbury, United Kingdom70 contributionsFantastic way to see the rainforestAbsolutely loved this. We rode the gondolas for a return trip and stopped off at each stopping point both ways for a look about. We even saw a python chilling out on some branches and there were skyrail rangers providing inclusive mini walk and talks round the gangways. It’s a bit pricey but we thought it was absolutley worth it for the breath taking views and immersive but easy experience We were fortunate that it wasn’t that busy a day and we had every gondola to ourselves! Easy to park at the sky rail station, friendly staff, toilets at each point. Kuranda itself seemed a bit of a tourist trap but fun for a quick poke about the stalls.Hi Mary, Greetings from the ancient rainforest! - MylosReviewsMalmö, Sweden190 contributionsGreat day out in the rainforest behind CairnsWe purchased the sky rail up and historic train back from Kuranda. It is a well run operation, and the cable car trip up was pleasant with 2 stops with short rainforest walks and views of the Barron falls. We spent 2 hours in Kuranda (which was fine for lunch and a short walk through the rainforest) before taking the train back to Freshwater station. A shuttle bus then took us back to our car at the sky rail car park. Everything worked like clockwork, a big and interesting day out in the rainforest behind Cairns!G'day from the rainforest, Thank you for your wonderful review! We arrived at the Skyrail near the train station, in Kuranda, on time for our 1.30 departure and were told that they had suspended the Sky rail due to lightening and we waited in the Skyrail building for an hour and a half before we could board. The scenery along the 1.5hr journey was pretty much the same up to ¾’s of the way along until we came down the mountain on the Cairns township side. Not enough information is provided in their brochures or website telling us that when we got off the Skyrail we would be picked up by a bus that would take us back to Cairns Central Shopping Centre. We were dropped off on the opposite side of the Shopping Centre to where we parked our car near the Kuranda Scenic Railway station at 8.00am that morning. Not being a local we had to navigate through this large shopping centre and find our car in the large carpark. These problems made it difficult for me and my 88 year old mother that was with me. Cost for Adults $50 one way. Last year we went to Whistler in Canada and had 3 cable car rides over the mountains for a total of $36 per adult.

Hi there,
We are sorry to hear we did not meet your expectations on this occasion. As you have mentioned, in adverse weather conditions it can be deemed necessary to pause operations until it is considered safe to operate again. Unfortunately, this can mean that our guests become delayed. The safety and comfort of our guests is the utmost importance at Skyrail; therefore, we must take all precautions necessary. It is unfortunate that you did not receive the necessary information surrounding our transfer service, however your feedback on this subject will passed on to the relevant department to further improve communication around this matter. Our coach drivers are licensed to drop Skyrail passengers off to the safest point possible. In this case, our drivers must drop passengers off at the bus stop outside of Cairns Central shopping centre, as this allows for coaches of all sizes to park safely.
We thank you for your review and feedback, as this assists us in improving our procedures to further enhance our customers’ experience.
Kind Regards,
Monika.

A mixed review..
Whilst we really enjoyed the actual skyrail experience, we had issues in Kuranda.
Originally I had booked 3 people one way as we had planned to either take our time in Kuranda or just spend a short time there then catch an uber back to save time...
But because we loved the skyrail, I was willing to pay for a return fare back.
Yet because it was around 15-20min after their so-called booking system closed, they wouldn't let us book tickets.
Instead, we were left stranded in Kuranda, which was basically a ghost town on a Sunday!
Plenty of staff exiting the carpark and not one asked if we were ok getting back.
No uber drivers were available and Cairns taxi doesn't go to Kuranda but luckily made an exception or we would have been stranded all night!
We had to wait 45mins for the taxi, so it was a total waste of a day, all because staff wouldn't book us a ticket or just let us ride back (of which I would have happily paid the next day).

Greetings from the ancient rainforest,
Thank you for your review and feedback. We are sorry to hear that your expectations were not met when you re-visited Kuranda to book a return journey. There are many factors that can affect the possibility of guests travelling after our last boarding time, including staff having already left the mid stations, and gondolas being cycled off at the Terminals. Due to this, we are unable to allow guests to travel after a certain time. We are sorry to hear of your long wait in Kuranda. Generally we do like to make guests aware that are travelling one way on Skyrail that they may experience difficulty in ordering an Uber or taxi from Kuranda, however we will be taking on your feedback to ensure this information is clear and is passed on to all future guests booking a one way experience.
Thank you again and we do hope that you enjoy the remainder of your time in Tropical North Queensland.
Kindest Regards,
Monika

This was one of the best things I have ever done. We travelled both ways via the cable car as the train was booked out, but the views were incredible. I'd definitely recommend taking a diamond view car (clear glass panel in the floor) as it gives a beautiful view into the foliage. Ulysses butterflies flashed by in a spark of blue, and the Barron Falls were breathtaking.
The lookouts and walkways at each stop are beautifully managed too, with clear guidance and information.
Definitely worth the money and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Skyrail Rainforest Gondola- A Charming Experience
Performed and enjoyed the travel on 27 December 2019. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is a 7.5 km scenic cableway. It runs above the Barron Gorge National Park. This is in World Heritage Area on the north of Cairns in Queensland.
The journey by the Sky Rail shall be in my everlasting memory.
It was the longest gondola cableway in the world when it was completed in 1995.
The cableway has been constructed between Smithfield and Kuranda. The cableway includes six-person gondola cabins that float metres above the treetops.
A one-way trip above takes about one hour thirty minutes. There are two rainforest stations, Red Peak and Barron Falls. These stations allow exploration of the forest floor on boardwalks and education of the World Heritage area. Prior to construction, the site was surveyed to ensure preservation of rare species. The top soil and leaf litter were collected and reintroduced when construction was complete.
Utmost care was taken to protect all natural things. Plant seedlings were removed during construction and were replanted in their original locations.
The Sky Rail in 1996 Australian Federation of Travel Agents Awards for Excellence in the category "Best Resort or Tourist Attraction" Far North Queensland.
The Sky Rail bagged in 1999 Wet Tropics Management Authority Cassowary Culture Award.
In 2009 as part of the Q150 celebrations, the Skyrail Rainforest Cable was announced as one of the ‘Q150 Icons of Queensland’ for its role as a "structure and engineering accomplishment.
We went to the terminal station by Gondola. After taking tea, snacks and minimal shopping our tour manager called us and informed that bus arrived there. So we returned by Bus.
Apart from me and my wife, in our Gondola Cabin 4 more persons were there. One them was staying on the terminal station.
I collected many information but I could remember and write only few in my tour diary/chronicle.
This Sky Rail journey shall remain in me everlasting memory.
I have some photos to convey the beauty and glamour of the journey

We certainly enjoyed the skyrail ride above the trees, looking down and across the magnificent treetops, home to the world's oldest tropical rainforest. The car appears to hold 2-6 people, but the two of us had the car to ourselves; the car is completely enclosed, very safe, very secure, but continually moving except for the slowdowns/ stops to exit (you are not rushed, it's very comfortable and safe). There are two short stops along the skyrail ride to to Kuranda. Well, the entire reason for the five stars, was not only the beauty of the ride, but the joyous welcome at each stop from the happiest, most gracious staff of any tourist stop, ever. The final stop is a small town, Kuranda, fun to walk around for maybe an hour (not much there). Happy Days to your staff!

The sky rail soars above the tree tops and even into the clouds at times. We took the sky rail from Kuranda back down to Smithfield. It is an amazing way to see the rainforest. There is an app you can download now to listen to as you go down. We listened to it for a little bit but found we preferred the sound of the rainforest. It's a handy thing to have though.
We went on the sky rail on New Year's Eve and there was rain and storms around. We had to sit and wait in the terminal for 50 minutes before they felt safe to let us go again. During this time the staff were very good in coming around and informing us of what was happening and how things were going with the storm. I found most people were happy to sit and wait and we all ended up sitting on the floor together and waiting quietly and nicely. Thanks to the General Manager who was out there telling us what was happening. It certainly helped.
Overall the sky rail is an unique and interesting experience.

Well worth the cost, it's a fantastic trip flying over the tops of the trees and seeing the rain-forest from a totally different perspective. The stop at he station on the way gives you a good chance to get out and have a walk around and see Barron Falls from a different side than the train on the way up.

Greetings from the ancient rainforest!
Thank you for your review of Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. It is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your experience exploring the ancient rainforest, including the breathtaking scenic views of Barron Gorge National Park, Barron Falls, the Cairns region, the Coral Sea and the tropical rainforest canopy.
Combining the Kuranda Scenic Railway with your Skyrail experience is certainly one of our favourite ways to experience the ancient rainforest, giving you two unique perspectives of the oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest on earth.
We hope to see you back in the ancient rainforest sometime again in the future!
Kind Regards,
Monika

Rode a bicycle there from Cairns by accident. We wanted to go karting.
We were hot, sweaty and needed a break. We decided to catch the cable car both ways as we missed the train up. Skyrail turned out to be a great decision. It seemed expensive at the ticket desk but in hindsight it was a big ride that takes at least 25 mins and 3 car changes to get to Kuranda, so cost is about right for how expensive it would be to run.
The look around at each stop was great. The waterfall was in full flight during heavy previous rain. Very powerful and awesome to see. We only had 30 mins before the last ride back, so only got takeaway food from a cafe and a very quick look at Kuranda.
We would do the train one way, cable car one way next time for the experience.
Definitely recommend doing it at least once.

I’m a local and decided to do the Skyrail again recently (it was my 4th time). It’s still a fantastic attraction and the experience of seeing heritage listed rainforest as you glide above the canopy is impossible to beat. The new Edge skywalk is the only thing that has changed (glass boardwalk at Barron Falls station) and it was underwhelming to be honest. But I had a wonderful day floating over the treetops and enjoying the perfect views out to Cairns & Barron Falls from my gondola. If you can I recommend stopping and reading all the interpretive signage & wet tropics information on display as it is truly fascinating. This time I did the Riverboat cruise in Kuranda and enjoyed lunch and a cuppa at Riley’s Cafe on Coondoo St.

Greetings from the ancient rainforest,
Thank you for sharing your review of Skyrail. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your 4th time experiencing the Wet Tropics rainforest, including the scenic views of Barron Gorge National Park, Barron Falls, the Cairns region, the Coral Sea and the tropical rainforest canopy.
As you have mentioned, the Skyrail experience includes two stops at Red Peak and Barron Falls. It is highly recommended to all guests to stop and spend at least 20 minutes at each point, to learn and discover the history of the rainforest, as well as to learn about the flora and fauna that lives here. We offer various educational aspects, including the complimentary ranger guided tour, Rainforest Discovery Zone and numerous interpretive signage.
Thank you for visiting the ancient rainforest and we hope to see you again one day in the future!
Kindest Regards,
Monika

Well I'm scared stiff of heights and this trip was no exception to that. However the day we travelled was a lovely day with no wind so the ride down from Kuranda quite smooth. The views of the beautiful rainforest were stunning. My husband enjoyed the scenery more than I as he looked around, where had a fixed view (too scared to look down). The story of how the skyrail was built is awesome and should be congratulated (watch on the skyrail website). We would recommend to anyone not scared of heights and those who may be scared of heights who can manage their fear. My husband would do this again without hesitation. I wouldn't but only due to fear.

We are arriving in Carins on a cruise ship. We booked the train and cable car combo. How do we get to the train station or the cable car station?
How do we return to the ship?
Thanks,
Written 5 January 2025
I would suggest taxis from the ship to the Skyrail outlet and then back again when you have completed the train/cable car combo. If you are taking the train up to Kuranda you would probably be better to go directly to the train station. When you arrive in Kuranda the cable car entrance is just next door, if you ask at the station they will direct you.

Hi, we are booked on the 3:30 gondola back to Smithfield. ( booked through the Kuranda Rail website) Then catching the transfer at 5:20 back to Freshwater.
Is 3:30 the last trip for the Gondola? will we have time to stop at Barron Falls and Red Peak to explore? Or should I change the booking to a bit earlier. I want as much time in Kuranda to look around.
Written 1 August 2024
I recall the gondolas depart at regular intervals and don't need specific bookings.

hello! how is it with the combi-ticket? one way with the train and one way bsck by the cablecar? how does it work with the car? where we park? where is the most ideal place to sleep next? thank you!!

Apologies - the train was out of service during our visit because of the flooding / typhoon damage. We stayed at the Pullman Reef Hotel Casino (great hotel/great location) and took an Uber each way (easy / relatively inexpensive).

We are traveling both up and back on the Cableway. Is there any reason to get off at Red Peak and Barron Falls in both directions. If we do not get off at these stops on the way to Kuranda we will have an extra 45 minutes at Kuranda. Does that make sense?
Written 10 January 2024
Hi.
We recommend stopping to explore both mid-stations. You can stop at Red Peak on your ascent to Kuranda and then stop at Barron Falls on the descent to Smithfield. Allowing you more time in Kuranda Village.
At Red Peak guests can meander a rainforest boardwalk loop to the lookout, join a complimentary Ranger Guided Tour to unlock the secrets of this ancient landscape, and learn the story through evolution in the Rainforest Discovery Zone.
At Barron Falls guests can stroll another boardwalk loop leading to The Edge Lookout where they can enjoy panoramic views of the mighty Barron Falls and deep gorge below, or discover the rainforests rich biodiversity in the Interpretive Centre.
Alternatively, you can request a change of return departure time upon arrival at our Terminal. Our reservations team are happy to help change ticket times if there is availability.
Thank you
Rebecca

Hi all, Just wondering if there is a ticket booth at Smithfield where you can purchase tickets?? How long should you allow to do both Skyrail and Kuranda Railway?
Thanks in advance!!
Written 21 October 2023
Hi Missy M,
We do have a ticketing counter at our Smithfield and Kuranda Terminals. We recommend pre booking your experience to provide you the best opportunity to secure your preferred dates and travel times and to reduce waiting times and avoid unnecessary congestion.
We recommend allowing 90 minutes for a one-way experience, this includes time to explore at Red Peak and Barron Falls.
Regards, Rebecca

Greetings from the ancient rainforest,
We recommend a 90 minute one-way experience to allow guests time to explore Red Peak and Barron Falls. There is no time limit for guests at these two mid-stations, it is all about taking the time to explore and enjoy your time in the rainforest.
At Red peak guests can join a complimentary Ranger Guided tour, meander the boardwalk loop, lookout across the Barron Gorge National park and learn about the Wet Tropics evolution at the Rainforest Discovery Zone.
At Barron Falls guests can enjoy panoramic views of the falls at The Edge Lookout, stroll another boardwalk loop or discover rainforest biodiversity at The Rainforest Interpretive Centre.
Kind Regards,
Rebecca

I would really love to do the sky cableway, I get clostrafobic in small spaces, is the gondola open anywhere ? or is it closed up please and is it air conditioned please
Thanks
Vivian

Hi Vivian, Our gondolas are enclosed however they have large windows, vents for air circulation and 360 degree views. Time spent in the gondola is 10-15 minutes at a time, broken up with two stops where you can take a break and explore the rainforest floor. The other option for an open air gondola is our Canopy Glider experience which is a premium experience escorted by a Skyrail Ranger. Information for this experience can be found on the official Skyrail website.
Kind Regards
Rebecca

What is the minimum length of time coming down from Karanda to Smithfield on the Skyrail if you don't spend time at any of the stops? Just battling against a flight departure time in my planning.
Written 28 February 2022
Greetings from the ancient rainforest, we recommend a 90 minute one-way journey with time to explore Red Peak and Barron Falls. There is so much to discover! If you choose not to stop and explore the lookouts, history and rainforest floor we would still recommend 45-60 minutes.
Kind Regards
Rebecca

Have booked the KSR from Cairns train station where we will park our hire car. We are returning by the skyrail how do we get from the end of the Skyrail back to our car? Thanks.
Written 28 May 2021
Hi Susie, you will need to either book our coach service from Skyrail to Cairns Central (this is an additional fee and can be added to your booking by contacting our reservations team), or you can make your own way via uber or taxi.
Hope this helps!
Kind regards,
Monika
