My wife and I scheduled our flight out of Kashgar in the late afternoon just so we could experience the Livestock Market. It is well worth the experience to see a real local cultural activity. All sorts of animals being sold and there is lots of good food to be had. Try the fresh noodles, you will not be disappointed.

Excellent life scenes, very lively although dirty, market. great place to see local habits, selling sheep, camels, horses, and cows. In front of the animal market there is now a general market with fruits, clothes, food, bbq meat, fish, honey, nuts, yoghurt etc. Very fun and worth it! Only on Sundays. Do not wear nice clothes and shoes...you're gonna get dirty!

Kashgar is transforming very quickly into the modern age and this is one of the only truly traditional, authentic experience remaining in this fascinating region. It should not be missed! You will see a thousand year old tradition carrying on like it once was - noisy, dusty, crowded & chaotic - farmer herders trading all sorts of life stock including sheep, goats, donkeys, horses, camels, yaks, cows etc etc (depending on the time of the year you arrive).

I visited Kashgar in the spring so the weather was very mild. I suggest picking a cooler day to go as I can imagine the heat in summer. Wear clothes which you do not mind getting dirty in. You should aim to arrive just before 11am Beijing Time / 9am local time so you could see the farmers arriving via scooters & trucks and unloading their animals. There are food stalls along the side of the market with the best samosa (yum!) & mutton soup for when you need a feed or need to rest your feet. If you're thirsty there are also fruit stands and freshly squeezed pomegranate juice.

If you have young kids - be careful as the animals can be a bit on the wild side. If you're an animal lover like myself, you may find it difficult to stomach the treatment of the animals as they are often pushed and shoved. However, just remember the life these animals lead are far better than their counterparts in the west - they get to roam freely on the grasslands of Xinjiang for the majority of their life. We should not judge so quickly for we have not achieved even close to the level of harmony with nature the Uyghurs have with their animals.

If you're travelling Kashgar city centre, the cab should cost around 30-40RMB. However, you might need to pay a little more as the livestock market is quite remote and out of the way. Expect cab drivers to load the entire taxi with people so they could maximise their trip.

Enjoy & have fun!

Kashgar (Kāshí) has been the epicenter of the regional trade and cultural exchange for more than two millennia. The roads, rail and planes that now connect the city to the rest of China have brought waves of migrant workers and huge swaths of the old city have been bulldozed in the name of economic “progress”. Yet, in the face of these changes, the spirit of Kashgar lives on. Uighur craftsmen and artisans still hammer and chisel away in side alleys, traders haggle over deals in the bazaars and donkey carts still trundle their way through the suburbs. Add to the above the Sunday livestock market that is the real deal, and you have a highlight to everyone’s visit there.

Spent several hours at this most interesting animal trading and selling market for horses/goats/sheep/yaks/camels and other assorted farm animals. I believe it one of the last of its type in the world. You cane not be squeamish as the animals are not always treated humanly. Wear old clothes and clean your shoes once you leave.

I grew up around farm animals and spent a lot of time at Canadian auction markets but the Kashgar animal market is a whole other level!

There are all types of animals being bought and sold. Cows and sheep are the main fare but there are many other animals including goats, yaks, camels, and who know what else that we didn't see.

There are several food stalls inside the market as well as people selling all manner of goods including shoes, clothing, jewelry, animal handling equipment, and kitchen gadgets.

The market tends to get muddy and there are thousands of animals defecating all over the place, so wear shoes you don't mind getting crap and mud on.

The animal market only takes place on Sundays and doesn't get really busy until after noon.

The animal market is a real working market and does NOT have anything geared toward tourists. It's an incredibly authentic experience and worth going.

It's not super easy to get to. The easiest way is to take a taxi however we took the bus.
A taxi will cost approx 30 yuan to get out there and the bus fare is 1 yuan per person.

To take the bus, you have to get onto the bus number 23. Bus 23 is not easy to find. The bus stop is about 100 meters northwest of the west tip of the Bazaar, toward the university. The GPS coordinates are 39.474196, 75.999133. You will have to take the bus on the rural roads around Kashgar for about 20 minutes until you cross the main ring road/highway and then you get out at the first stop after crossing that road (many people will be getting off the bus to go to the animal market).

After getting off the bus you have to walk 300-400 meters south to the entrance of the animal market.

Good luck!

this place is about 25 minutes drive out of the city. It is in the north west and on a new street. The place is traditional and I hope it will not change! There were already quite some tourist,... But it mixes well.

Somebody said that there sufficient taxis,... That is for sure not true. Please let your taxi wait for you. Costs a bit more,... But you get back for sure!

I really liked the place,... And some people say plan your whole trip in Kashgar around this market.... But I am not sure if I 100% agree with that. But if you are here on the weekend do not leave it out!

We went at 10am which was a bit too early. Things started to pick up around 11-11:30am Beijing time. Taxi between 25 (metre) or 30rmb (negotiated price) and easy to get a taxi back to town after it drops people off at the markets.

I loved this market. It's chaotic and wonderful. Very ethnic. They sell camels and horses and sheep and other animals. It's fun to watch the locals bargaining. I almost got run over by someone test driving a horse. The food at the stalls by the market looked good but I wasn't venturesome enough.

The Sunday Animal market is another exaggeration.First the name is incorrect. There were several animal markets near Kashgar, when you asked the local people most likely they do not understand which one do you mean. Even the taxi driver had problem of figuring out which one is the 'Sunday Animal market' although I had the name written in Chinese and Uihgur. The instruction given in the guidebooks and forum message for taking public bus to go there is also incorrect. They all said people should take bus#16 which does not even go to the same direction.

The official name for the Sunday animal market in Chinese is “活畜交易市场” in English it means Live animal trading market. It is also commonly known as “Dong Bazaar” 东巴札. It means East bazaar. The location of the market is actually north of Kashgar.

Bus # 23 is the one which will take you there, The sign on the bus is "23东巴札"
The bus terminal is in a small north-south oriented road, off the east side of Binhe Rd. which is parallel a small river/canal in the area of the International Grand Bazaar.
The bus stop is diagonally opposite the Kashgar #7 Elementary School.
The entrance to the lane is about 75m north of the corner of Aizirete Rd and Binhe Rd.

The trip to the livestock market is about 30 minutes, it costs 1 yuan. Most of the Uihgur people will get off at the highway junction, just follow the people to the entrance of the market which is approximately 200 meters on the left hand side from the junction.
