Definitely Worth the Stop on the way back to Surabaya
Our driver recommended this stop. The fee was 250K rupia, which was not bad. It includes a 20 minute scooter ride through the forest to the gate of the forest park. Our guide took us along the concrete walkway, where we got helmets (required wearing due to falling stones) and if you don't bring a rain-coat you get need a parka, available at the gate. The initial falls were small but as you wind into the slot canyon, the water is flowing from all sides, ending in a circular terminus with a 200m water fall with water flowing down all sides. It is refreshing and the guides will help you get photos with you in them, as they know a lot of good angles. Don't be too stingy with the tips, the guides are great.

Wonderful guide makes the trip enjoyable
Our guide is very helpful - he took fantastic videos and photos of us (guiding us where to sit and how to pose). He also took good care of us, telling us where to step when crossing the stream or climbing the rocks. In these places, he also took our hands one-by-one as we crossed the stream or climb the rocks so we felt very safe when we were with him. And the fun of crossing the cold water stream and letting waterfall fall on your head is once in a lifetime. We enjoy this much more than Tumpak Sewu waterfall, and part of it is due to good service that we had.

    Beautiful!
This is an absolutely beautiful waterfall in a very scenic narrow canyon, ending in a tall circular basin with the water cascades on all sides. The photos are lovely but being in the middle of it is even better, well worth a visit! We got a moped ride down the road from the town to the trail head, then walked the couple of km to the falls. The walk is easy and flat, just be aware there are a couple of points where you walk through the river, so wear some sandals or something similar that you don’t mind getting wet. We had hiking boots but took them off, you don’t really need anything so heavy, the walk is relatively short and easy. You’ll also need a waterproof coat to walk among the falls at the end. There are people selling plastic ponchos if you want. We also had a guide. The route is so easy that a guide may not be necessary, but I’m glad we did it, because he was friendly and helpful and he helped us take some beautiful photos. Plus it only cost a tiny amount but it pays back into the local community, so it’s a good thing I think. The only downside for me was that it can get busy on the weekend and there are a lot of people just trying to get showy photos for their instagram. It would be nicer if you could just enjoy being in such a beautiful place without people doing instagram ‘photo shoots’!

You will have to take a motorbike ride to the entrance and walked roughly about 2km to reach the waterfall.
There are locals/food stalls selling waterproof bags and raincoats along the way.
This waterfall is really beautiful and worth the visit. There are many photo opportunities as well.
We have no trouble walking around with slippers but be mindful that it could be slippery.

Madakaripura is an awe-striking attraction not to be missed. Prepare to experience the falls first hand, and get real wet, as the local guides bring you on a walk into the falls itself.

If at all possible, request for Solikin as your guide, (the guide in blue tee in the attached pictures), as he single-handedly heightened the whole experience with his unexpected expertise in photo-taking.

Thanks to him, my friends and I got a whole album of unforgettable moments within these magical falls. Here's sharring some very few but nice pics.

This is beautiful series of waterfalls. We opted for the guide who was amazing. So kind helping us across the river and then over the higher rocks at the end. He was an expert of taking really lovely pictures.
The paved path in places is now washed away hence having to cross the river and onto unmade paths.
You will get so take shoes that dry. We had walking sandals which worked well. It’s a nice walk in and we spotted black monkeys.
Would recommend a visit here

So the title may sound like a big call but I have seen alot of waterfalls around the world and this is the best. The fact you walk through it is even more amazing. The path in and out can be a little slippery. Be prepared to pack and prepare to get wet. All in all a safe, well presented, guided adventure. Stunning all the way!

We reached the car park and were told we must take a motorbike to the waterfall entrance. It was raining hard at that time with thunder, but we had no choice. The road is open, no problem for cars to go through, but the local village head has decreed that access is only by motorbike. Of course we got soaking wet, arrived at the entrance and were told it has been closed for the rest of the day due to the rising water at the waterfall.
Back to the car park to get changed in the very basic toilet...a very disappointing experience for what are amazing waterfalls according to the photos published.

The largely huge and amazing waterfall in east java. The must visiting place.

I came here with the helpful guide for navigating and phototaking.

A little bit walking, but the atmosphere is really refreshing.

I give this the lowest rating. Not for the spot, which is beautiful, but for the horrible racist 'guides' waiting to rip off white people. I'm white and am married to an Indonesian wife, we even live about 1 hour from this waterfall. Sadly i will never actually see it because after going there today and having to deal with all the vultures scattered at the path entrance, we decided to turn around and not see it although we did pay entrance and parking fees. You pay to visit this waterfall about 3 km before you enter the actual area(10.000 rupiah p/person). These 'guides' count on that because at the start of the almost 1km footpath they stop all foreign tourist and insist they must take a guide for 50.000 rupiah per person. While we were discussing this, 3 groups of locals just came back from the path, 3 groups all without the 'mandatory' guide. For indonesians a foreigner is just a walking moneybag waiting to be squeezed dry. Note that these guides are not officially hired, they are just local people hanging at the entrance harassing the tourists. The money they earn goes 100% into their own pocket and not towards the preservation of the area. You can in fact go without guide, but expect a half hour discussion and being treated like some sort of criminal. An average hardworking Indonesian local to this area earns about 1.5 million rupiah per month while these lazy leeches just try to hassle tourists for a 1 km walk that is 95% just over a concrete path. Would NOT recommend this for foreign tourist. Tourist should stop paying these ridiculous things to change the indonesian greedy mentality!

In my humble opinion, the waterfall is worth visiting for 3 simple reasons :

a) OUT OF THIS WORLD. You won't see this if you live a citylife, as the 1km walk to the waterfall, you will pass the deep valley, vegetation, huge boulders, river stream and the jungle ambience will give you an experience you can never get in citylife. The ferns and jungle forestry you get to see is huge and it's like walking in Jurassic Park or Mordor or even Avatar.

b) FEEL THE FALLS. This waterfall allows you to feel upclose and personal because you can touch it, be rained on it, be soaked, allows you to swim in the main pool (8m deep) and even feel the wind sheer generated by the rushing waterfall from the top (200m in height). You can't get such personal experience in Niagara Falls or Iguazu Falls. Madakaripura waterfalls consist of 5 streams and you have to walk pass 3 falls to reach the main 4th waterfall. That experience is 2nd to Croatia's Plitvice waterfall.

c) LEGEND
The waterfall's history dates back to the prime minister of Majapahit Empire which was his last residence. The legend says the bad chi of a visitor will be removed under the waterfall's raining water. The 800 year old legend is worth that journey.

GETTING THERE
The waterfall is on the way to Bromo, Probolinggo or Cemoro Lawang. I suggest you do the waterfall first before going to Bromo but that is provided you can reach the waterfall before 1pm. Reason is because you need 3 full hours to spend there, that is 1 hour to walk in to the waterfall, 1hr to hang around, 1hr to return to the parking lot. You must do this before night falls (5.30pm). Many will do this after their Bromo trip (reaching the parkling lot at 11am). I prefer to do it before going to Bromo (1pm) because there are less crowd. Unfortunately, only private tour will get you to Madakaripura.

FEES
My itenary to Bromo does not include the waterfall, however I'd requested the driver to detour to Madakaripura before going up to Bromo. Paid him 150,000rp for the detour. The 150,000rp is justified as it takes about 40mins just to get there from the main road to Probolinggo. At the parking lot, you will also need to hire a guide (50,000rp) to bring you in and return to the parking lot. 50,000rp per guide. Pls note, the locals there will try to tag to you hoping you will hire 2 guides. Do insist and thank the 2nd guide if you are hiring just 1 guide. If you are silent on not hiring the 2nd guide, he will follow you all the way to the fall and you will end up hafta pay him. In my case, I thanked the 2nd guide before starting and politely told him we are paying for 1 guide only and told him "goodbye". The idea is to politely inform the 2nd guide so that he knows he will not be paid and he will not follow you and will return back to the parking lot without disturbing you.

WHAT TO BRING AND WEAR
- Wear slipper or sandal - bcos u will walk on knee deep river streams and you will have to step on rocks. Do not barefeet, do not wear trekking trek shoes.
- Bring raincoat if you do not want to be wet.
- Wear swim-wear bcos you will be wet anyway or if you intend to swim, wear it on before you start your journey.
- Bring a plastic bag with seal and put all your passport, wallet and mobiles in it to prevent water splashing.
- Do not leave anything with the driver or in the car/van at the parking lot.

PHOTOS
Photo will not justify the experiece and feeling to see the real thing. It's worth a lifetime just to be here and feel it. Enjoy the legendary waterfall.

Do rate my review. Thanks.
