- Phil J1 contributionVery good and informative. Our family really enjoyed this museum and gallery. John was very informative showing a lot of respect to Australian history and war history. Mr Kelly was very talkative as well. Would recommend to others and we will be back. Thanks again John.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 October 2023
- Bonnieblue65 contributionsFantastic museum and high quality wooden goods. What an amazing place, the museum is AWESOME go look, there’s a five dollar fee each to go in and it’s worth that and more, it puts other much larger more expensive museums to shame frankly and I’ve been in quite a few over the years. We initially went down the wrong road off the roundabout past Bunnings and found a dead end turned back and then located it so glad we did. Photos are allowed to be taken in the museum but not in the shop. Museum features in carefully organised sections collections on Australian war history as well of that of American and European along a section on the ancient people of Australia. There’s short informative cards alongside the various displays, I loved how the displays were done and there’s so much to look at, lots of model planes and boats too plus weaponry, the displays are not interactive so if you’re with young children ensure they are supervised don’t touch things. My husband and I love wartime history, especially WW2 as Guernsey was occupied by the Germans and we don’t need interactive exhibits to become immersed in reading about war history. The owner was very passionate about his work and the museum and rightly so and we had a nice chat about carpentry and war memorabilia. His wife who was on the front desk explained he had designed all the displays and I was so impressed with the quality and detailing, I’m not sure I can decide which was my favourite thing but I loved looking at the various uniforms and the section on Gallipoli was especially sad and poignant when you see that famous picture of them sitting on the great pyramid and realise so very few came back. It’s tragic and heart rending. There’s a large wood gallery to start with featuring some beautiful carved statement pieces along with smaller items such as vases, pen pots etc and the museum is through two doors at the back of the room, it’s air conditioned. I bought a small wooden vase and the owner said when we were leaving he had produced this item over thirty years ago when he decided to try his hand at wood turning and it was the first thing he produced in class. It’s now on it’s way back to Guernsey in the Channel Islands!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2024
- Chris3 contributionsRecommend all should visitWould recommend. Everyone should visit. Fantastic woodwork, relevant to local area all completed by owner, top class. To top it off a military museum that truly emphasises the cost of war. BrilliantVisited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 March 2024
- gillian k21 contributionsGot to goThis place is amazing! The work that has gone into this display must be thousands of hours at least. The talent of the owners is beyond belief! You have to see it. You have to look everywhere to notice the detail and fine workmanship that has been carried out. The different types of wood, the ideas and use of these timbers is truely amazing. Thank you.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 May 2024
- Hawkins G1 contributionUnbelievable in todays worldIf you are looking for wood carvings, this is truly the best I've seen for a long time. John is a true artist of old, unique in today's world of factory made products, each piece carved by hand, singular pieces, and multiple figures in different scenes. The uniqueness of his work is undervalued. And his museum is something else, well worth a look.Highly recommended.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 May 2024
- Glen S1 contributionVery educational for the young generation, in the private museum collection. This has an awesome little museum of uniforms used during the great wars. This is a private collection. The owner is passionate about the history and is a Veteran Veteran. He is also a 5th generation wood worker. It is worth having a look for the whole family. This is a good way to show the history to our young generation. Lest we forget all those who served and are currently serving.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 June 2024
- Mischa T9 contributionsHistorical museum experience, not to be missed! We had a fascinating and enriching experience. We stepped back in time, learnt about different events, and significant historical figures. You can expect to see a variety of artifacts, exhibits, and displays that brings history to life. The owner John was very knowledgeable, my children have gained knowledge and an appreciation/respect of the past. We could have listened to John’s historical stories for hours. We highly recommend visiting this little gem of a museum!Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 July 2024
- Ruth EAdelaide, Australia81 contributionsWoodn't you visit??I love timber products and this gallery did not disappoint. Beautifully turned and carved pieces for sale, small to large. Bought a gorgeous turned vase made from a jam wood fence post from the wheat belt. Very interesting museum too. Well worth a visit. Incredibly clean and tidy. Just on the service road, plenty of car parking (onsite carpark) and van parking (on road).Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 July 2024
- Nadine D1 contributionWorth the detour! We dropped in on the way south from Perth, and so glad we did! Called in to see wood gallery however so pleased we were privy to the museum component aswell - so interesting! John is a warm, friendly, informative man who loves to share his knowledge. Very talented with his wood working skills, and very generous in his time teaching others about some of the modern histories of our time. Well worth the visit.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 July 2024

Spent lovely time at the Featured Wood Gallery & Museum in Australind. John is an extremely talented craftsman and the Gallery is full of wonderful pieces, some created from Old Bunbury Jetty wood, and lots of jarrah pieces. So much to see and even the outside of the Gallery is full of creative items. The Museum is a small, but the displays are really well done, sensitively displayed, well worth the $5 entry fee.

My parents and I stopped over at this museum/gallery in Australind on our last day in the Bunbury géographe region. After having already had an amazing time on a our short getaway in the south west, this little gem was the cherry on the top. The collection by John Ablett that spans across Australian and American history is no short of incredible. We were so impressed by how aptly all the collectibles had been displayed and the incredible detail that had gone into putting this collection up. Sue who runs this gem was amazingly lovely and she took us through some important facts about each of the sections in the museum and John’s wood craft displayed in the gallery is a sheer work of art. You can see the labour of love and passion (55 years worth of as John informed us) that has gone into creating each of the items, many of which are available for sale.
The only downside for us was not having enough time to appreciate all of what this gem has to offer.
Highly recommend anyone passing through or anyone living in the area or its surrounds who have not yet had a chance, to check this beautiful place out.
For only a minimal entrance fee to the museum, there is so much history and art to take in.

This place is amazing, what a hidden gem down near Bunbury in the south west. John has created some magic with wood and collectibles from around the world displayed in his museum. There is a great number of products to buy and a variety of woods are used in the making of these items, you are sure to find something to please you.
The museum has taken John over thirty years to finalise and you can see the love he has put into it and he is willing to tell the story of its construction and his involvement in it . Do yourself a favour and put an hour aside and go visit you won’t be disappointed.

This unique museum houses a collection of Australian and American memorabilia which has to be seen to be believed. John Ablett, the owner, is a mine of information and he tells of his collection in a truly interesting way. When our family visited, we were there for at least a couple of hours and the time just flew by and we felt stunned by the amount of information we had absorbed without realising it.
There are also examples of woodcraft, made by John and his family which are for sale and the master craftsmanship is easy to see, even for a Philistine like myself !!
It was a fantastic visit and well worth the $5.00pp entry fee. When we next stay in Australind, a return visit will definitely be on the list of "Thing to do".

This place is a little gem. The museum’s displays on the American civil war, Ned Kelly, Native Indian and more were excellent. Check out the full size wooden pistols, timber products for sale are stunning. If you like timber products go and have a look, if you are a timber worker you will appreciate the work this chap has done, a must see, all this for only $5.00 pp . COVID has had its effect on this family business, go visit and keep this place going.

Not only was the craftsmanship brilliant in the wood gallery, the exhibits were exceptional and many available for sale at very reasonable prices.
The Museum was also brilliantly done with many many outstanding pieces brought together to make a fascinating experience with many unique items on display. The visit was made even more enjoyably by the appearance of John the owner who was more than willing to spin a yarn about each and every item. His knowledge was inexhaustible and his enthusiasm contagious.

Amazing couple. John is an amazing master craftesmen. So much talent and knowledge. Definitely worth a visit you will leave (probably after much longer than expected) much richer for your visit.
Truly worth the visit to either buy some amazing WA made products or to enrich your historic knowledge with a visit to the museum.

What a find this was! We spent close to two hours this morning looking through John's museum and admiring his wood craft. From the imaginative ways he has used shrub and tree root systems as habitats for marine life, to wood crafted replicas of revolvers, rifles, etc. His love and passion for collecting and showing/sharing so much of his memorabilia was obvious and made our time with him informative and interesting. He is fortunate his has found a way to blend his two passions of wood work and collecting memorabilia. We were fortunate to have seen it. Highly recommended.
