Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The drive encompasses a circuit that takes you through the western parts of the Stirling Range national park. It is predominantly an unsealed road but in reasonably good conditions. It provides for a number of stops at scenic locations whether this be lookouts, nature areas, walking trailheads or day use areas.
We wandered up to the Central Lookout as part of the drive which offered wonderful views. Allow upwards from three hours depending on any activities you plan to do.

The drive is 42km and good to detour on the way to or from Albany (from Perth). The total extra dirt track however is really 52km and will take 1.5 hours driving time.
Go via Salt River Road in Cranbrook (see google maps) to get tot he track. There are a couple of lookouts but also some nice view of the mountains and vegetation as you drive along.
The drive itself is relaxing but do allow an extra 1.5-2 hours driving time when compared to driving straight to/from Albany

The nice part of this drive is that you get to drive among the mountain peaks. However, there are two downsides:
1. It's all gravel, and the gravel can be quite rough in places; so you'll find yourself driving slower than you'd like. Definitely not suitable for caravans.
2. It's long, so you can't just do a short stretch; it's either the whole thing or nothing.
For a tourist drive, you can get good views of the mountain range from the paved roads, so I'm not sure it's worth the effort of a lengthy stretch of gravel unless you're really keen.
On the other hand, if you're visiting any of the peaks, like Mt Magog or Mt Tallyuberlup, then you'll have to use this road to get in, since it's the only access. I've really enjoyed climbing some of the peaks in these ranges, and that makes it worth the effort of driving to get here.
Tourists just looking for a scenic drive may find it worthwhile if it's part of a longer trip you're doing through the area (although it will take you a lot longer driving this way than taking the paved roads around), so you'll have to weigh up how much you think you'll enjoy this in advance. It can be very pretty, but it's not for everyone.

We completed this route at end of March on a Sunday and saw four cars during the whole journey. We were in a 2WD car which coped perfectly. Although not the season for flowers the vegetation was pretty and the views spectacular.

Visited Stirling Ranges NP on Saturday 23rd November and wanted to do this drive but it was 40km of gravel road. You need a 4x4 to do it safely so next time we will make sure we have the right vehicle.

We drove right through the Stirling Range to the Western Look Out, then walked down the road for miles looking at the flowers. Lots of Banksia, Myrtle and Dryandra. Very exciting. A few birds and a goanna seen on a walk on a trail from one of the car parks on the way back.

This is a great drive on mostly good quality unsealed road. You could definitely do this drive in a 2wd car.
Beautiful scenery along the way.

We did the 40 something klm drive across the Stirling range N.P. in late winter. It was a bit early for massed displays but we saw some beautiful pockets of the unique wildflowers. Really special.
Its a dirt road but was in excellent condition if you're sensible and there's great views at the look outs.

This road allows you to get right into the centre of the ranges, it the road can be rough so you need to take care. If you have no experience driving on gravel / dirt roads then think about how you will go. Is duty in the summer I would imagine, and a little muddy in the wet
