We had been wanting to come to Fort Walsh for awhile. It is a little drive from Maple Creek but interesting and scenic especially in September. It usually closes on September 28 according to their website but when I cold he said due to Covid it was closing September 26...hmmm not sure what 2 days might do. Bring good walking shoes as there was no shuttle from Fort Walsh to the massacre site (3 KM) one way. There was also no signs nor benches to sit. When we asked where the massacre site was they just said follow the gravel road. It is very steep for the first part and coming down you had to be careful. There were a lot of loose rocks and I fell even though I had good shoes and was being careful. The winds were about 75 KM/Hr that day so it also made it unpleasant. The staff at the gate were not friendly but the lady in the Fort gave us a a little information. It was more like a self guiding tour.

We felt it was worth the trip into Fort Walsh to see way the NWMP lived. Very interesting building and get a feeling of their way of life.
We also went on the Battle Creek trail. Our advise is, be sure you are fit and have the time to complete the trail. It took us 1 - 3/4 hours to complete and it is challenging for us seniors. The first part has you climbing hills and valleys then onto the gentle slope toward the abandon fort. The second part had you climb half way up the hill then become a mountain goat and hike along the edge of the hill all the way back to the roadway. Really great views and worth the trip.

In all our years of going to Cypress Hills, we had never ventured to Fort Walsh. Even the drive thru the ‘badlands’ to get there, with cows on the road and the ‘Texas Gate’ signs were a novelty!
We got to the Fort later in the afternoon, but we were able to tag along with the last tour group of the day. We checked out the artifacts and info inside first, before getting shuttled down to the Fort area. The shuttle was needed due to having a teen in a cast, on crutches… so know that they are very accommodating should you have limited mobility issues. (There was also a wheel chair available at the bottom, should we have wished to use it) All staff were friendly and helpful.
The Fort was neat experience and our guide was informative. Going thru the bunk houses and barns, blacksmith etc proved interesting & educational.
Worth checking out!

Unfortunately Covid 19 has been awful for travel. I was here as a child and wanted to see it again. Unfortunately for us it was closed. My fault I guess but I had not been able to really get a confirmation o the website one way or another. It's out of the way for sure. On another note don't try to drive the gravel road from here to Elkwater unless you have a 4x4 truck with REALLY GOOD tires. It's impassible when wet. We were in our car. Very lucky to make it through to the first intersection of another gravel highway. Then headed North to next larger intersection and on to Elkwater. It had rained a few days ago and the road was still a mess. White knuckle time for sure.

We found this place a little out of the way, on arrival there was hardly any staff due to Covid... which made it kind of bland.
It would have been nice to have someone guiding visitors along.
We asked the staff about a gas station nearby and were told to go back to Maple Creek as Elkwater (where we were headed) ,had no gas stations.
So we drove back to Maple Creek and filled up then over to Elkwater to find a gas station!!
Lots of extra driving because of misinformation given by the staff.
This place has a lot of interesting history but is not very well promoted.

we took the back highways from Grassland National Park West block where stops for gas are few and far between, one at Bracken and Frontier but that was it till Consul. The scenery changes abruptly as you near the Fort as if you are in the mountains with switchbacks and altitude sooo beautiful. It was super hot that day and the building was AC it was a bit of hike down to the Fort from the main building where we took in a 15 min video so instead of going by the red chairs out front go the more gentle slope to the must see graveyard. Staff were the best we have seen and soooo helpful when i had heat exhaustion from it all. We were disappointed which was not the staffs fault that no period costumes or reenactments were being done but it was still very interesting

A great place to learn about the early history of Saskatchewan. Staff were informative and helpful. Finish off the morning or afternoon with a beautiful and informative hike. It can be short or as long as 2+ hours. Would not hesitate to return in the future!

Excellent way to spend a couple of hours, visit the information centre then onto the guided tour of the fort. Very informative, the story of the massacre and its consequences. Good walks from the campground up into the hills. Well worth a visit.

Staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Also very knowledgeable about the history of the area. We travelled here with young children and they were very engaging with my kids and even played some outdoor games with them. When we returned to our vehicle we noticed we had a flat tire and the staff were tremendously helpful in assisting us with this. We definitely plan on returning and doing the longer hike at the Fort. Thank you all so much!

First of all the drive to Fort Walsh is one of the great surprises in SK. Switchbacks and forests! Then the fort itself is so well kept. Great brochure to tour the place! You should go out of your way to stop here!
