I went with a small group for lunch at Establecimiento Juanico. The food was delicious. We found out that the chef was a member of the Deicas family, owners of the vinyard. The care and attention given to the dishes was amazing. First we ordered the croquetitas, which were made with slowed cooked pork meat simmered in tannat wine. The taste and the texture of the croquetas was amazing, a must try! Then, we ordered the pasta noir, the salmon, and the mollejas. The pasta noir had a just right spicy taste, the mollejas and the salmon were delicately sesasoned, a perfect balance of different flavors. The portions are generous. The salad has fresh and tender green leaves like it is hardly found in restaurants. The waiter also brought a basked with two diferenet kinds of bread. The "orugo" bread with grapes, and flavored with spices and salt, a mediterranean flavor. There is also a large selection of wines of which I particularly liked the Botrytis. Overall, a top quality restaurant, at a high mid range price, with abundant portions, in a nicely decorated place with big windows from where to look at the field and vinyards. I will definetly go again.

A winery really close to Montevideo that produces some quality wines. We did the tour and the lunch menu. Both wine, food and the visit were great. The employee who accompanied us the visit was very attentive and helpful.
Extra tip: the price of wines here are unbeatable!

We booked a tasting/visit and it was underwhelming to say the least. It was shortly before noon when we arrived and we were seated in a separate table from our friends who had booked tasting+lunch even though all of us said we were fine seating together. But ok, rules are rules, we sat separately.

The wine is not bad, but the tasting of 4 (yes, FOUR!!) different wines dragged on for 2.5 hours!!! We finally got up and walked out assuming we’d go visit the place, but apparently they only have one tour per afternoon. We were told it would start at 3 pm and we were more than ready to go, but at 3 we were told that we’d have to wait until everyone was finished with the tasting/lunch including a large group that had arrived at 2:45 (remember how long the tasting took?)!! So we just gave up and went back to montevideo.

It was a wasted afternoon. I will not be visiting again.

We assumed we would have the tasting and go for a v

Okay, the "tour" was just a drive past the vineyards, a stop at the building with an overlook of the area, and a drive past the harvest area. They had just started to harvest the grapes for white wine. Maybe when this place is in full harvest and production it might be better.

This top-flight winery provides an opportunity to sample -- generously -- several of the excellent wines of Uruguay. The tour includes a visit to the fields, where the varieties are grown; some of the wine was unique to the region. The meal features a mixed grill and terrific wines. Everyone was quite hospitable. The locale for the meal was clean, airy, and spacious; the table setting was elegant and appropriate. The grounds also were lovely and well maintained.

On this tour, there also was a tango dance performance in the dining room. Very enjoyable and not too long.

Tip: From our ship, we came from Montevideo to Juanico by a restored railroad train, powered by a steam engine. What a gorgeous and loving restoration. The track also passes some homes and countryside that one would not otherwise get to see. Highly recommended way to get to the Establecimiento Juanico.

Finally a venue whose staff know how to treat tourists and understand what they are looking for when visiting a foreign place. They have a very kind treat to everyone as well as a developed work dynamic. A place worth recommending with excellent wines, food and service.

My husband, our 3-year-old daughter and I visited Establecimiento Juanicó on the 18th of February 2011. We were very lucky to be welcomed by an excellent guide named Diego. Extremely interesting tour, exquisite place and fantastic wine tasting experience! We had a really special time there.

We had a lovely wine tasting and tour with large pours of several wines. They even opened a rare vintage for us. Overall a great experience, but this is a very large winery, so expect bus tours of large groups and noisy!

The highlight of this trip was the superb winery at Juanico run by a family and producing millions of bottles of fabulous wine annually. It employed 300 local workers throughout the year and this swelled to over a 1000 when hand-harvesting the grapes. The vineyard was so extensive that our brilliant guided tour was made in a coach, finishing with a tour of the cellars and its public buildings where an exquisite 3 course lunch with wine pairings was served. A starter of cold meats, cheese with bread and fabulous local olive oil was followed by a selection of BBQ meats and vegetables with a lovely dessert to finish, and all washed down with 5 wine tastings including the award winning deep red Tannat reserve. Then surprisingly, we were treated to a wonderful tango display by a pair of local artistes.
We reached Juanico by steam train which took over an hour and gave us an eye-opening insight into life in Montevideo's port area. Returning by coach was much quicker and included a short tour of the city. A wonderful day and some of that red is now in my lounge awaiting consumption. Highly recommended.
