There are so many walks/hikes ranging from 20 mins to 10 hours. This is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Options include short-long hikes or just have a picnic at the waterfall on he rocks at the very bottom.

Even the drive there is absolutely exquisite.

Absolute must visit. Stunning lush green cedar tree forest, with many trees over 1000 years old. There are 5 trails, each different length and difficulty level. It is all well signposted, so impossible to get lost. It’s a magic forest!

I think if you do this after Shiratani Unsuikyo, it’ll be a bit disappointing so maybe plan to do it beforehand. This place is much more family friendly though If you are planning to wear shoes you don’t want to get dirty and have an easy, paved path the whole way. I only did the 50 min route because I was tired from hiking to Taikowa rock the day before, and the way the public bus times work out you either leave at 11am or 3pm. I wanted to do other things in Yakushima so I was in and out of yagasuki land. This place still has a lot of great cedars, plants and moss for you to check out in an organized fashion if that’s what you’re looking for.

The bonus is the drive there, it’s absolutely beautiful and I was already satisfied before I got to yagasuki land!

If you love cedar trees, this is definitely the place for you! There was a landslide in one section of the long walk so you can't do a proper loop but i don't think we missed out on much.

It's was a good first hike, a good warm up for Shiratani Unsuikyo. I read quite a few reviews saying it was an easy hike. I think I'm moderately fit and i wouldn't call it easy. Easy to me means you won't really break a sweat unless you're jogging/running. I would say it's more 'easy to moderate' given all the uphill inclines and you really have to watch your step.

Side note, my partner drank the water from the steam and he said it was amazing. So something to try?

We hiked up to Tachu Dake on the same day as our plane departure, so to add a level of security to our day we hired a hilarious, delightful guide from YesYakushima to take us up here. He picked us up from our Minshuku Suimeiso in Anbo at 7am.

I had just as much fun in Yakusugiland as I did in Shirantani, and I'm so glad I made it a priority. Its topography is entirely different from Shirantani. It's hard to believe it's the same small island, but it was just as visually stunning and exciting. I saw scenery I couldn't believe was real. The trails were a bit technical and anything but boring. You had to watch your feet the entire time, maneuvering through tree roots and planks, which made it so much fun.

We did the whole hike through Yakusugiland up to Tachu Dake in just a few hours. The maps timeframes are very generous. It doesn't really take that long if you're hustling. There are pink ribbons all over the trees and it's sign posted in many places., so if you pay attention to those and you have a map, you won't get lost. We saw lots of monkeys and deer! The macaques are the size of cats and the deer are the size of dogs, and they are neither curious about your or afraid of you. People have respected them and avoided feeding them.

The Yakusugi trees are so interesting. They hollow out as they age, so it's impossible to tell how old they are but a branch feel off one of the biggest trees recently and they aged the branch at 2500 years...so it's feasible that some of these trees are around 7000 years old!

The soil is sterile because it rains so much. Everything grows on the surface and draws nutrients from the moss, so you can drink out of any stream here without getting sick.

Tachu Dake is the most random rock formation jutting out of the forest and it was historically believed to embody a deity that watched over the people of Anbo. It was an incredible view - just as breathtaking as Taiko-Iwa Rock.

We loved hiking through Yakusugiland and getting to know the trees!

In my mid-70s, in the rain, with worn out, slippery shoes (I later threw out, and should not have attempted this walk in), I spent 3.5 hours climbing Yakusugiand trails, tripping on roots and falling (fortunately not too far and not too hard) two times. It took my legs 5 days to recover, so I wasn't in any shape to do much of the more taxing and (reportedly) more challenging and interesting Unsuikyo Gorge the next day. But glad I did this. The two museums/nature centers were both closed the next day (Tuesday) when I had planned to see one. I think Yakusugiland and Unsuikyo are both trips thru second-growth forests, and doubt many ancient cedars remain, but still a fine walk in the woods.

If you are looking at walking on proper trails or boards while being in the cedar forests, then this is for you! I would recommend that you go there in the morning so that you can see the pretty morning dew on the ferns. It might be cold so do bring an outer wear along!

From the entrance, you can choose to go on a 1 hour trail (30 mins in and out) or go further to see the cedar trees. Take note that the boardwalk might be a bit slippery if it's wet, so make sure to wear proper shoes.

This is the shortest hike out of the big three (Shiratani Unsuikyo, Jomon Sugi), even for the long course (about two hours). It's an easy hike, with some very nice scenery and a lot of old, impressive trees.

Tip: take the morning bus all the way to Kigensugi (an impressive 3000 year old tree), then take the return bus to Yakusugi-land 20 minutes later for a chance to see both places and a slightly shorter day waiting for buses.

Yakusugi Land is not as spectacular as Shiratani Unsuikyo but I still loved it. We did this trail first so we enjoyed the hike. The first portion of the hike was all wooden path and easy to navigate. You can stop after the first portion if you want. The back portion is not as easy, especially in the rain. It was quite slippery so just be mindful of that. The hike didn't take long, about 2.5 hours so very doable and a good introduction to Yakushima. It was an easy prep for Shiratani. If you can do one hike then I would do Shiratani but they are different.
Once we were done, we saw Yaku deers outside of the entrance. Then we saw a Yaku monkey mama with her baby on the side of the road as we leave Yakusugi Land. It was a great end to our hike.
