Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Tsuetate Onsen is famous for its Koinobori, a carp streamers. But even not for that season, it is absolutely worth visiting. The natural surrounding is just lovely. Taking a bath in Onsen is really relaxing.

When we thought of exploring Hita City in Ooita Prefecture, we decided to stay at an onsen village close to the city rather than stay inside the city. We made the right decision to choose Tsuetate onsen about twenty kilometers away just past the border with Kumamoto Prefecture. I took an early stroll around the village. Here you can find the features of a traditional onsen village along a river and many onsen ryokans on both sides of the river bank. Compared with the modern and luxurious onsen places such as Beppu, Yufuin and Kurokawa in Ooita Prefecture Tsuetate reminds me how onsen villages used to be when my parents took me on a holiday when I was a child. At the corner of the village you find a jizou which is a kind Buddhist monk that will protect the villagers. From the bridge over the river you can get an excellent view of the village as well as enjoy a splendid view of the surrounding mountains.

If you have to spend just one night in the Aso area, try to spend it in this hot spring town. When the hot springs were discovered 200 years ago, other establishments were made and created this cozy town, set right in the middle of the mountain valleys and divided by a small river. It feels like I went back in time to quieter, peaceful days in Japan, with narrow and curving alleyways and an incredible nighttime atmosphere with the orange-yellow glow from lamps & steam quietly rising from the springs. Wake up early to catch the sun rise between the mountains - it is absolutely breathtaking. There are bridges crossing from one side to the other, and I saw one with several benches. And, needless to say, it is awesome to end off your day with a relaxing soak in the hot spring baths!

This area is surrounded by mountains. With the hot steam coming from the onsen you can cook vegetables! We cooked sweet potatoes there and it was a really memorable experience. The area has a quiet, small town feel. A nice place to visit to get away from the city.
