This is a touristic small town in the day time but becomes very quite in the evening. I spent a day there many for a half-day walk up the hill to a shrine. The walk uphill takes at least 2 hours covering 1368 steps, to be exact.

This religious festival is scheduled yearly in Kotohira from Oct 9 through 1. Among the different events, a nightly parade is very popular. Hundreds of local people join the monks and march down the shrine through the city wearing beautiful costumes. They re-enact events which happened centuries ago. Really scenic (see pictures)

The Shinto Shrine is definitely worth visiting. It's a beautifull Shrine and it's more than worth the climb up the several hundred stairs. After you've visited the shrine, leave Kotohira as soon as possible. The town is a touristtrap and a dreadfull place to stay the night. It's better to visit it on a daytrip from Takamatsu.

The reason for being here is to visit Kotohira Shrine http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1121431-d1397392-Reviews-Kotohiragu_Shrine-Kotohira_cho_Nakatado_gun_Kagawa_Prefecture_Shikoku.html Kotohira-gū (also known as Konpira-dai-gongen, Konpira-san, or Konpira Shrine) is a marvel. Konpira-san is the name appearing on the free tourist information brochure we picked up at the Tourist Information Center in the Marugame train station. We purposely arrived early while the temperatures were still cool. We wanted to... More

Service good in all the places we went to. A great small town. Mostly focused on the Temple and this is one of the most important temples in Japan.

We had the "pleasure" of climbing to the Kotohira shrine. You start in the town where were numerous places to eat. This area is famous for its udon. You subsequently walk through fairly narrow streets surrounded by shops geared for tourists. When we were there I did not see anyone who did not look like they were from Japan. The... More
