If you go to Koyasan (which we recommend), you will almost certainly arrive by funicular, which you catch from the station. Once at the top, you HAVE to take the coach into town as part of the road is (understandably) closed to pedestrians. Too many sharp bends and nowhere to get off the road.

Arg, Heights!

Koyasan station is the terminus for the on-rails cable car, which takes you up to the top of the mountain. The cable car itself is a smooth ride and the scenery when you reach the top is breathtaking. The cars run regularly, connect with the JR line at the low end, and buses at the top end. My husband loved the beautiful scenery as the car climbed the mountain.

If I was reviewing this on my own visceral opinion, as someone who is viciously opposed to heights, it would probably be a -5 because the station is at a 45 degree angle and standing on it made feel like I was going to be sick. Looking at it objectively (grudgingly) the Koyasan station is a lovely station with breathtaking views and efficient service. If you can raise your eyes from your shoes and calm your racing heart that is!

Nice station at the end of the cable train

This station is the end of the cable train that starts in Gokurakubashi and bridge an altitude from 540 to 950 meter in about 20 minutes. Nice view on the surroundings in mean time.

A place you need to know if going to Koyasan

Koyasan Station is the drop off point for most people coming to Koyasan. Coaches deliver tourists from Gokurakubashi station to Koyasan, but recent weather has damaged the track to Gokurakubashi meaning you need to get off at Hashimoto and get a coach to Koyasan which takes just over the hour. A local bus company ferries people up and down the mountain from the station dropping tourists at designated stops close to accomodation. Bus timetables feature at every stop. When taking the local bus from anywhere but the station - grab a ticket when you enter the bus and give it to the driver with payment when you leave (so they know how far you’ve travelled). The place works well.

Gateway to Mt Koya

The Koyasan Eki [railway] station is a small but functional railway station, with food and rest rooms, and bus ticketing counters and it leads directly to the Bus Stand. The trains coming here are more like cable trains or funiculars of Europe. When climbing up to Wakayama - Koyasan try and get the right-hand window seats for the best valley / mountain views. While going down on the return trip flip to the left seats. Even though the ride up through hills and mountains seems very remote, Koyasan is a well equipped town with motorable roads and all popular tourist amenities. Travel light, trains are compact!

The station staffs should consider the train time schedule.

The cable cars on the very sharp slope which are connected between the foot and the top of mountain are attractive because of its beautiful scenery from the window.
The problem is the time schedule to connect the trains which depart from the Gokuraku-bashi station on the foot of mountain. You have to rush into the train to catch.

Unique cable car experience

Interesting to ride on this cable car. Compared to other cable cars, the car itself was built in an angle and passengers sit in an elevated way. Love the intersection where cable cars cross each other

fun to use Kansai Thru Pass

JR trains don't go to Koyasan. The Kansai Thru Pass took us there from Osaka. The cable car was include din the pass. it was fun to travel that far, and we had a superb day.

Helpful staff!

This is a great little train station with very polite and helpful staff. At the end of a long and anxious travel day, it was great to be directed to the cable car and then to the proper bus.

Well run as is all Japan

It was an interesting journey to and from the station from Osaka. To get to the town you have to take a cable car up a very steep gradient to the bus station. As with all Japanese railways every thing was on time and the station wll kept.
