- Sherilyn C17 contributionsWorth spending a day & night to enjoy the beauty of natureThe view here is splendid. Ine no Funaya is the favourite place for me and my husband in our Kyoto - Osaka trip. The transportation may not be convenient and that's where the beauty is. Not crowded, natural beauty of the sea and fish village. Not much of food choice or accommodation, but it's where you got to return to the beauty and simplicity of mother nature gives us.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 April 2024
- Prabir GKolkata (Calcutta), India3,068 contributionsNice Japanese villageThis picture perfect village on the Kyoto Perfecture offers serene view, cool walk on the Ine Bay, seagull feeding during the bay cruise and many more. The main attraction is a ferry ride in the bay and feeding seagulls and kites. You can buy food for them and seagulls come and take food from your hand. As soon as the ferry starts, flocks of seagulls and kites start following the ferry for the food. The cruise operate from 9 am till 4 pm and costs ¥1200 pp and ¥600 for child. We visited this sleepy village during our recent visit to Japan. It was a clear day. The ferry ride was really enjoyable. Good experience.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 May 2024

So during the boat ride, you get to see the village from the bay and feed the seagulls and eagles. Beware of the sharp claws. Ine no funaya holds a special place in my heart. The kindness of the local people really make me want to stay here longer. I wish I can buy a small plot of land and build a small house here. I wish people will never know about this place so that it will never be too crowded with tourists. I don't want to write a review either but I need to keep track of the many places I have been in my life.

If your trip to Kansai is long enough or if it's not your first trip to Osaka or Kyoto, try paying a visit to this rare and atmospheric sight of Japan. Probably due to its distance from either Kyoto or Osaka, the coverage of this place in foreign-language travel guides tend to be merely one or two pages, which makes it kind of an off-beaten track. Yet, the ambiance, heritage and scenery there is worth the long journey. One the way there, you will see less and less foreign tourists and meanwhile more and more Japanese, suggesting that this is something the local love!
To get there is in fact not difficult. Get a Kansai Wide-area 5-day pass and a Kyoto Sea Area Pass, with the latter available in Fukuchiyama Station or on the train from Fukuchiyama to Amanohashitate. I would suggest getting a two-day Sea Area Pass because Amanohashidate also boasts awesome sights to see! The pass enables you to use quite many facilities other than the bus and train, such as boats (boat operation in Ine is subject to weather conditions), bike rental, cable car, etc.
For your reference about time spent, I set off from Osaka in the early morning and getting in Amanohashidate took 3 hours. I spent around two and a half hours for sightseeing and got on a bus bound for Ine at about 13:40 (buses seem not so punctual that day or maybe in general). The bus ride is no more than one hour. You can choose to have a unique boathouse guesthouse experience. But reservation in advance is a must. Sleeping there is not so solo and budget friendly. If you are not staying overnight, hop on the bus after 4 or 5 p.m., head back to Amanohashidate, and take the train and arrive in Osaka at 8 or 9 p.m.--a long but worthwhile day trip!

I came to Ine from Kinosakionsen with KANSAI WIDE AREA PASS. I took bus from Amanohashidate station which costs 400yen. And I make a stop at Inewan for a 25 minutes scenic cruise(670yen). After the cruise i walked(20 minutes) to Ineno Funaya. A hidden gem you should not be missed.

We stay at a traditional funaya no yado - Kura, 舟屋の宿-蔵with dinner and breakfast. Sashimi is very fresh, hot pot is served with winter limited seafood and fresh vegetables. We can see Ine bay from room, even while bathing in the bathroom. Funaya provides pick-up services, we even took boat back to pier next to bus station. I had an enjoyable experience and good impression. Recommend to slow down, stay overnight instead of short visit.

We drove more than three hours to get to this quaint remote village located north of Kyoto. And the village is definitely worth the drive. It's incredibly beautiful and quiet. A cafe had just opened on the day of the arrival, and it is right on the dock, so we sat by this big French window, sipping coffee and looking at this gorgeous scenery outside. That night we stayed at one of the boathouses. Although there's no tv and the wifi was really weak, it's great to get away from all that. I wish I could have stayed for two nights!

We visited this beautiful place in January. It was cold, sunny, and fortunately not very breezy. We walked alone in the village and maybe just saw one or two other small group of tourists. If you want a change from crowded streets of Osaka, this is definitely it. For people who usually live in the cities, do take your time strolling here. You might gain a different perspective on life. My suggestion is to spend, at bare minimum, half a day here. I would love to stay overnight if time allows.
It took us 20 minutes to drive from Miyazu. The scenery is beautiful on the way to Ineno Funaya as well. We visited the tourist information first to get some pointers and suggestions on must-sees. The staff there are very friendly, and there was one guy who speaks perfect english. The map they provided is extremely helpful. It shows all the eateries, which are not many, and all the stops for getting good photos of this area.
I wished I had time to take the sightseeing boat to see the bay, but we spent too much time taking pictures and sitting in a restaurant overseeing the bay. Well, there is my reason to visit again! I do hope this place stays like this and doesn't become another usual location filled with the same tourist shops.

Hello,
Does anyone know a good place to stay near the funaya?
Thank you!

If you can speak Japanese or you are coming with Japanese, there are quiet a lot of options. If not, there are only two or three boat house you can choose from. You can check the website here to seek for English speaking ones. try search on Google: "Association of promotion for Japan Authentic Stay in Ine-ura area" It is highly recommended that you can reserve the rooms 3 months in advance, because most of the boat house only offer 1~2 rooms each night.

Are there any places online that you can book a room in a funaya or Inn on the water at Ine.

We are looking for a funaya (Inn) at Ine to stay for the night of 5th July for 3 adults.
Written 1 May 2017
You can go to the town's official website to check out the accommodation. However, all the B&Bs there don't have websites, so the only way to make reservation is through phone. And it will be better if you find someone who can speak Japanese to help.
