Residents of a thriving mining town needed entertainment, so they got a theater with a fashionable "western" exterior and a thoroughly traditional Japanese interior, where you sit on a cushion on the floor, and there's runways for performers to and from the stage, not to mention an elevator and turntable for the performers (the turntable is operated by hand). I don't think Kosaka gets many English-speaking tourists, so it's not really set up for people like us whose Japanese is basic to say the least. However, it makes up for it with enthusiasm and open-heartedness.
