About
Daisetsuzan Sounkyo-Kurodake Ropeway and chairlift opened on June 29,1967, as the climber's gateway the Daisetsu Mountains, and also to enable visitors tosee the magnifcent views from above the Sounkyo Gorge. The splendor of natural environment can be enjoyed throughout the year on Mt.Kurodake(1984m),Daisetsu Mountains' highest peak with the mountain greenery budding amid the snow melt in June, the commnunities of aipne plants in summer, the colorful leaves in autumn, and skiing and snowshoeing in winter. ●Kamuy-Mintara● The Daisetsu Mountains, where Mt.Kurodake is located, are known as Kamuy-Mintara(the garden where gods play) in the Ainu language. The area boasted over 300 virieties ob alpine plants, and the magnificent scenery can indeed be said to be "a paradise above the clouds".

It was just the season of autumn colors. The view from the gondola is spectacular. At the end of September, the weather is just right, as long as it's sunny, and you don't have to wear heavy clothing to feel comfortable with long sleeves and windbreakers. I enjoyed the magnificent scenery of the Daisetsu Mountains.

This cable car-chair lift combination is essential for the ascent to the plateau that is the heart of the Daisetzuzan Park. The complex of two cable transport systems in fact takes you from an altitude of 670 mts (Sounkyo Onsen) to 1520 mts. (upper station of the chair lift).
From here various paths branch off for the different destinations of the massif, although it seems to me that by far the most popular route is the one towards Mt. Kurodake, which represents the most direct access route to the central plateau, and requires an additional climb of over 460 m.
It should be noted that the chair lift doesn't have seat closures with movable parapets: a feature that I found here for the first time, and which I imagine isn't allowed in Europe.

I've been on the Kitami National Highway several times, so I've looked up at the cliffs of Sounkyo many times. It was cloudy and I was a little worried, but I heard that the cloud base was relatively high, so I took the long-awaited Kurodake Ropeway, changed to the lift and climbed up to the entrance of Kurodake, but the cloud base was still high so I was able to look down. I walked to Ameyuri Falls, afraid of bears, and unfortunately I couldn't see the top of Kurodake, but the waterfall looked beautiful. The lift was cool and refreshing, and I was satisfied with the view of Sounkyo from above on the ropeway.

Winter wonderland came early in Sounkyo. Masjectic views of the mountains covered with snow and the freezing cool air made it so worthwhile to be up in the mountains while enjoying the scenery. Plenty of snow made it more fun. This was in November. Woo-hoo!!! You can also enjoy your delicious ramen and coffee as there was a dining area for those who are starving.

Being mid-October the snow had started to fall and the top of the ropeway had the first snowfall covering the mountains of the range.
It's a beautiful place with really stunning views. Can't wait to get back over here in winter one time for some ski adventures.

We stayed two mid-summer nights in Sounkyo Onsen (the ropeway's terminus), and therefore a "trip towards the top" of Mt. Kurodake was a sure thing.
The first of the ascent's two legs, by cable car, was speedy and offered great views of the Daisetsuzan gorge. Moreover, the view from the rooftop observatory of the cable car's upper station was awesome. It probably would be spectacular in the changing colors of October.
In contrast to the cable car the second leg, via a noisy ski lift (attained by purchase of a separate ticket), was far more leisurely. Because the lift was barely higher than the ground, however, it basically offered no views of the surrounding mountains. Having dismounted, the top of the ski lift provided little to no vantages. Here's my take: the only good reason to take the ski lift is if you intend and are prepared to walk onwards and upwards to the top of Mt. Kurodake (which, unfortunately, we weren't); or, in the winter season, to ski downhill.
Bottom line: mountain hikers or wintertime skiers -- take both legs; everyone else -- stick to the cable car.

First of all, the entrance is difficult to find as you can't see it from the main highway and there is no signs from the highway. To get there, you will need to find Sounkyo Onsen Resort (many signs for that place) and once you get to Sounkyo Onsen Resort, you will see the station for the gondola. To get to the top, you will need to buy two sets of tickets, both are pretty reasonable and you can buy either one-way or round-trip for either or both sets of the trip. The first leg was 1950 yen roundtrip, which takes you up on a ski gondola and lasts less than 5 minutes and can take up to 20-30 people on each trip. Once you are to the mid-level, you can hike around there and go up to the top of the gondola station building for an awesome view of the mountain. After that, you can buy your next set of tickets, which is the rope chair lifts (again used for skiers in the winter) and I believe the round trip ticket was 600 yen, which lasted around 15 minutes. Once you reached the end of chair lift ride, you will need to sign in at the ranger station to hike up to the top of the mountain. We didn't have enough time for the hike, but most importantly we weren't properly dressed for the hike. All hikers were wearing mud boots and hiking sticks, so be prepared if you decide to hike up the final trail. The temperature was lower than the bottom of the mountain, but not really cold in July, so you don't need to bring your down jackets just to make the final ascent. We highly recommend this place for those who are traveling in Hokkaido with their rental cars.

The ropeway will be stopped operating due to strong wind or bad weather. Therefore, please check the offical website before you go to the ropeway station.
纜車會因為強風和天氣不穩定的關係而停駛, 所以, 一定要在出發之前查看官方網頁.
If you will not further travel the Kurodake Lift and you only hang around and go to the observation deck, it spends around 30 - 40 minutes.
如果你不乘搭雙人吊車, 只是在纜車站附近逛逛. 大概要花 30 - 40 分鐘.
It worths to go.

After the Ropeway experience and then viewing the nearby two waterfalls of Gin Ga No Taki and Ryu Sei No Taki, there is a restaurant 5 minutes away located at the second floor of Sounkaku Hotel. So convenient for a buffet lunch break . Good Japanese food , reasonably price, in a nice relaxed ambience.

We woke up early at about 6.20am and managed to catch the 6.50am trip up the ropeway. The great thing was, it was too early for tour groups, there were only one other person with us in this cabin which can take up to 100 persons!
The trip up was smooth, we had clear blue sky and the sun was shining. Our eyes were filled with the Colours of autumn below us as we climbed higher and higher.
Will definitely try one more time in another season for a different experience!

80歳の両親をつれていきます。8月末ですが、歩くところは多いでしょうか?
リフトはやめたほうがよいですか?
気温はどうですか?よろしくお願いいたします。
Written 29 July 2017
