Smelly

The sulphur smell is very strong but very interesting. Parking 500 yen and they have a gift shop. Also a fun hiking trail close by with very informative signage along the way. Your parking ticket also gets you into another location and they can give you directions on how to get there.

Impressive views, nice trail
Sep. 2019 • Couples
We took the hiking trail from the train station, which was pleasant. After the Mt.Io the trail continues to Kawayuonsen village, so we had a coffee in the village and took a bus back to Kawayuonsen station. The mountain itself is an active volcano, we took few impessive photos of smoking sulfur and boiling water puddles. I recommend to take the trail, together with the mountain it's a nice experience. Beware - accordind to warning signs in the area you should travel with a bear bell.

"Awesome"

We went there as our excursion after the 2 weeks of fieldworks and laboratories during the International Summer Courses on Integrated Marine Biology and Ecology in Akkeshi Marine Station, Hokkaido University. It was amazing that this nature has to offer that we enjoyed. This is one of the reasons we (human) need to protect our environment because we need it, as we enjoyed the creation of our Creator.

So so

Average visit but not worth it given everything around. The entrance fee is 500¥ and you can do a small hike around the peak. Lot of sulfuric gas

Fascinating
Jul. 2019 • Friends
Driving between Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashu takes you past this fascinating sulphur mountain with steam rising. This is a great chance to see volcanic activity up close, very close. There is a parking fee to enter the parking lot - keep your ticket as it also covers parking at nearby Lake Mashu. Next to the parking lot is a restaurant, gift store and toilets. For a dollar, you can buy an egg that was cooked in the steam. A short walk takes you to the star of the show - bright yellow sulphur vents that cover the side of Mount Io. There are also boiling water vents. A fence prevents you getting to all the vents, but one is before the fence and people were standing right next to it. A memorable sight.

Beautiful

We went there as part of the photography tour with Michele Michiko by private vehicle. It is beautiful where you can get really close to life volcano that spews out sulphur. It has a very big car park and a shop cum kiosk that you can buy tasty green ice cream. Worth going to take a look.

Mount Lo, Hokkaido : My Perspective
Sep. 2018 • Family
This place is alive with hot steam coming out from the earth. You can see yellowish sulfur ozzing out from the surrounding hot steam. There is a parking fee payable at the entrance. You have to walk up a bit from the carpark. Do wear comfortable shoes as the path tend to be rocky. Simply amazing view.
