Interesting exhibits

The Icelandic Wartime Museum is devoted to the events of World War II in Iceland. Iceland was occupied during World War II, first by the British and then by the
Americans. The museum has many interesting exhibits.

Very interesting and very much worth a visit

This was a very interesting museum in Reydarfjordur, a relatively short detour off Route 1 on the way from Hofn to Egilsstadir. We took Route 1 rather than the F939. The British occupied Iceland in 1940 to prevent it falling into German hands. There were many interesting exhibits and lots of information boards with stories of interest and poignancy, no more so that the story of the soldiers lost in the mountains in a winter exercise and the rescue of many of them by the brave locals. If you are a senior be sure to ask for the discount before they ring up the price of the entrance on their contactless terminal as the price was not particularly cheap. Note that there is a Bonus and Vinbudin close together in a new shopping centre in the middle of the small town.

SMALL BUT IMPRESSIVE
Aug. 2021
As a World War Two buff, I was really looking forward to this site. I admit it was less than I expected but only because it was representative of exactly what was there. As it was, the museum has a great deal of quality artifacts that are nicely displayed. The journey there takes some time but if you are a WW2 buff and in the area, you should stop to see it.

Very well presented

We are WWII buffs, so we were excited to visit an museum about the Iceland's role in the war! The museum hours are very limited, so we had to go through quickly; however, we found the displays to be excellent. There are so many artifacts from the time period, and they are exhibited in interesting ways. One of the most engaging exhibits was about the gentleman who was Iceland's flying ace! There is also a small movie theater, as well as some other media displays. There is a lot of information about the Americans and Brits and how they worked with the Icelanders during the war. This museum is well worth a visit if you are in the area and at all interested in WWII.

Informative museum

Good but small museum about the british / US army station in Reyðarfjörður during World War 2. Offers information in both icelandic and english.
Especially good for those who want to know more about the daily life of the service men.

Shore viosit from cruise.

Absolutely brilliant. Easy access - seems to have been rebuilt since cruise brochure was created which portrayed very difficult access. Fascinating stories of Icelanders heroism during WWII when Ice3land had British and German garrisons in different places

Great museum

We stop on our tour at the Icelandic Wartime Museum. The museum is housed in an old military bunker. The museum is small and packed with WWII artifacts. There is also an interesting movie about a British incident the local folks played a heroic role. I enjoyed the movie. Outside there are some war time trucks, a tank and a few additional items and bunkers.

Interesting Little Museum
Oct. 2019
We stopped here for an hour as part of a tour group. The museum had some nice WWII artifacts and a very interesting movie regarding the deaths of 8 British soldiers during a blizzard in January 1942 and the Icelandic family that helped saved many more soldiers. Worth a stop!

Surprisingly great

This place have surprised us. We were expecting something interesting to read, spend there an hour max... but it was wrong. Two hluta were not enough. Nicely done, the audioguide was perfect, we would like to have it as an audiobook, but since it’s not possible, we have to come back there again.

A genuine surprise for WWII buffs
Jul. 2019
Located in eastern Iceland is the Icelandic Wartime Museum. My first sight was a WWII era "Deuce and a half", very cool. A Deuce and a half is a small truck that can hold 2 & 1/2 tons of cargo. Our guide was a local elderly gentleman who's English left a bit to be desired but to me that just added to the charm and authenticity of the museum. The store behind why there was an American and British presence on Iceland made perfect sense. The artifacts were incredible and really added to the whole experience. Obviously I'm a WWII buff but I truly believe anyone who visits will enjoy it and leave with a new appreciation for the sacrifices the Icelandic people went through during that time.
