Buyer Beware of Odysseys Burgundy Barging Tour
Oct. 2019
My wife and I recently completed our first Odysseys tour, their Burgundy Barging trip (Oct. 2019). I have traveled extensively over the last 50 years and have relied on quality tour companies to provide trips that have a high degree of success. Based on conversations with local townspeople, the crew of the Jeanine and Odyssey's own tour director, this trip had no chance of success; it was a disaster. Odyssey's offered this trip during the heart of the very predictable rainy season, which most likely resulted in large profit margins for their company due to off-season pricing. The promise of a barge (and bicycle) trip turned out to be a bus trip. It rained constantly. We were told that we were unable to travel on the advertised canals because either the water in the canals was too low at the beginning of the trip and a day later was too high (not sure of this logic since the rainfall was steady but not overwhelming). In essence they sold us a fraudulent itinerary, analogous to a ski trip to the Rockies in August.

We were stuck on a tiny barge. The carpet in our room was constantly wet during the week. The accommodation was cramped and always damp. The tour director and the crew of the Jeanine (the barge) did an admirable job of trying to salvage this trip, but the conditions were beyond hope.

This trip clearly did not provide the experience described in Odyssey's literature. Normally, I would consider a bad turn of the weather beyond the control of a tour company. In this case, however, I cannot excuse Odyssey. The promise of a canal trip at this time of year was a sham.

I think you should take this problem up with Odysseys Tours directly. This has nothing to do with the Burgundy Canal.

What a Trip!!
Oct. 2019
Our trip on the Savoir Vivre started out rather sad, no water to travel through the locks. Thanks to the Barge Ladies and our fearless Captain Richard, they saved the trip and it became a most memorable adventure. Captain Richard and staff went above and beyond making sure we had a wonderful time. Other guest would make a suggestion as to what they wanted to see or do and they made it happen. Truffle hunting, goat cheese farms, hot air ballooning (first company backed out and in 30 minutes he secured another company).
I cannot say enough as to how marvelous all of this was. Can't wait to do it again.

Perfection: Wine-Water Barge Trip
Oct. 2019
Dear Bea and Max:

It has been almost one week now since our Barge trip with Wine-Water and I seemingly still have a smile on my face. Thanks to the incredible hospitality of you, Max, Lindsey and Jo we had the trip of a lifetime. The Barge came as advertised. It was spacious, well appointed, and felt like we were on our own private yacht rather than a Barge. Your husband Max is not only an accomplished Captain but one of the nicest human beings we have ever met. From his knowledge of the area to his knowledge of wines (I think he must have been a Sommelier in his last life) to his ability to navigate the Barge thru the locks, he was flawless, professional, compassionate and friendly. What more could we ask for? And Lindsey was similarly gracious, knowledgeable, and caring. She did our laundry every day, cleaned and serviced our rooms each morning, and still made time to serve us wine continuously while we hung out either on deck, in the hot tub or below deck in the lounge/kitchen area. What more can a guest ask for!! And to top it off there was Jo, our own private chef. Her lunches and dinners were beyond belief; I never knew that a Barge could also double as a Michelin starred restaurant but indeed it did in our case. As for the negatives, there truly were none. We had 5 adults on board and felt very comfortable and never crowded, and we could easily have had one more adult and felt the same way. I understand that in 2021 you are converting your living quarters from one master and two regular suites to two master suites (going from maximum of 6 adults to maximum of 4 adults); I think either way works but we (my wife and I) are planning to come back once you do the changeover so couples won’t have to figure out who gets the master suite. For us, it was one couple (me and my wife), and our adult daughter and her two girlfriends so the room configuration worked great as each of their suites had a bathroom that was more than spacious and each had twin beds. Our master suite had a king bed and super large bathroom. Again, we felt like we were on a private yacht and not a Barge. I have left a lot out but hopefully any potential guests/customers who read this will want to book with you and your Barge. I am sure there are other Barge choices out there but I am certain none can match the service and quality of Wine-Water.

Wine-Water Hotel Barge
Sep. 2019 • Friends
What a wonderful week my friends and I had on this chartered barge traversing the Bourgogne Canal in France! Max and Bea and their staff were delightful. Each day included sightseeing historic and beautiful local sights in the villages of Bourgogne. Wine tasting was part of the daily adventures. Our accommodations were comfortable and cleaned daily. We had all meals on the barge (with the exception of a special lunch at a historic chateau). The food and wine served each day was exceptional. We were delighted not to have to change and dress up for dinner out. The barge has indoor and outdoor dining, a hot tub, lounge chairs, and electric and pedal bikes for guest enjoyment. There was ample opportunity for walking and meeting the barge later at one of the locks. We moored each night in a different location. The week was fun, historic, delicious, filled with wine and relaxation. No decisions to make and no unpacking/packing. Very enjoyable!!!

Cuisine & Cruise are Incomparable— the best !!
Aug. 2019 • Friends
This is a wonderful opportunity to see France without the hustle of traffic.
Owner/operator Bea is a thoughtful organizer who makes a lot happen in the background, while her husband Captain Max is an amazing and personable guide who seems to know everywhere and everyone, including those in the less-touristy areas.
The cuisine of Chef Jo has no rival — her sauces and originality with local fresh produce is incredible.
The boat is very cozy/comfortable— 6 passengers max— and all is kept spiffy with a very likable Lindzi, who is quick with the amenities, refreshments (especially the vast selection of local wines as well as farm-fresh morning eggs) and her fun stories.
A short day trip may include a tour of a local chateau, a market, a cheese/mustard shop in Dijon, a renown winery, a nationally-recognized building or location of historical importance; the other half of the day is spent relaxing on deck in lounge chairs idly watching ducks race the barge through the canal.
This is a holiday to be experienced by everyone!

Loved it
Jul. 2019 • Friends
This was a great trip. An old barge with a fantastic crew. Every day we cycled through French countryside and small villages. The scenery was amazing and the trip flexible to suit our preferences. Cheese tasting,
museums, wine tasting, snail farm, canal locks, cafes, etc. The crew looked after our every need and the food Sylvie prepared for us each night was wonderful. Local delicacies and French favourites.
Our only reservation was that the cabins were very small with no aircon so it was difficult to sleep. Try to avoid the middle of summer.

We're very pleased you had a good cruise. I'm not sure what barge you cruised on, all the hotel barges we promote are air-conditioned with very spacious cabins.

Amazing Canals on the Wine & Water Barge
Oct. 2018 • Couples
We just returned from a week in the Burgundy Canals aboard the Wine & Water Barge and had the best vacation ever.

I didn’t know what to expect from the canals but was simply hoping for peace and quiet... and some wine! We were so very fortunate to have the last tour of the season on the Wine & Water Barge as the fall leaves were just turning color along the canal and it was dotted with beautiful yellows, greens, and reds.

The canals were beautiful beyond belief. Every time around a bend, I would think it can’t get prettier and yet it did. Pastoral, serene. The lock houses were charming and always a treat to see. Some were more we’ll cared for with cute flowers. The countryside along the canals, simply perfect. Loved seeing Châteauneuf in the distance for a couple days. There are simply no adequate words for how wonderful it was to quietly float along the canals. I loved there were so many locks, it helped to keep the pace slow.

And now let’s get to the Wine & Water Barge that helped make our time in the canals so special. Captain Max, his lovely wife Bea, their hostess Linzi, and Chef Jo were simply marvelous. They made us feel truly at home on their Barge, never intrusive but always willing to tell a story of life on the canals or accommodate a request. My husband knew I really wanted to have a proper boeuf bourguignon while on holiday, and Jo made it happen. Cooked the best burgundy beef stew I’ve ever had. Chef Jo really did a great job of preparing healthy, flavorful food that honors the rich culinary history of Bourgogne. Really helped to make our trip that much better that we were in Burgundy, eating Burgundian food. Mostly, it was the Wine & Water’s careful attention to detail and cheery service that made it so special for us.

The trip along the canals was well paced. A first evening we were parked in a lovely little lake/pond like area with a spectacular view of the sunset and surrounding nature. The next day we were off to Beaune and it’s beautiful hospices and charming town with a stop at Cheateau Corton and their excellent wines. Along the way, beautiful canal scenery and locks. The third day we were off to Châteauneuf with a lovely dinner at Chateau St. Sabine. The fourth day, a full day of cruising along the locks. One may think it could be tiresome, but honestly, we had such a wonderful time looking at the scenery, playing cards on the boat, drinking good wine... we didn’t want to leave! Our fifth day was spent at Clos du Vuegot and the cute village of Gevrey-Chambertain with another stop at Domaine Quivy right in town. Our guide for Beaune and Gevrey-Chambertain, Stevie, was excellent. He’s a wine guy, so it was awesome that he helped us to buy some well priced wines that we can’t find in the States. What a better souvenir from our trip than cases of wine :) Our sixth and final day at Dijon touring the markets. I don’t think you can talk about the canals without talking about the things you do along them. But they all combine to make one magnificent trip.

We will most certainly come back to the Canals de Bourgogne, the Wine & Water Barge and the amazing time we had. Having traveled all over the world and had amazing trips, this was a surprise to us all that we loved it as much as we did.

Merci Max, Bea, Linzi, Jo and Johnny their cute dog. Merci to the canals. This truly was the trip of a lifetime.

Fantastic Bike route
Jun. 2018 • Couples
Excellent canal riding: safe with no cars/ lots of picturesque villages with castles/ interesting eateries & gardens. what a great discovery! We used Chassignelles as our base which is literally steps from the canal tow-path. Biking in both directions is excellent & there is another 200 (I think ) Kilometers of trail yet to explore in a future visit. The food & wine are marvellous as are the locals. If you can also find the local farmers markets to visit on the bike trip, you have taken in some of the best of France.

Thank you for your comments and remarks. And yes the small markets are beginning to come back to Burgundy after many years of absence.

This was our 3rd barge trip - having cruised the canals in Loire Valley and lower Burgundy. Those cruises were amazing - and we didn't think we could beat that experience. The C'est la Vie is the BEST barge on the French Canals...it is not only beautifully and tastefully appointed, extremely comfortable - it functioned perfectly for our group of 8. Captain Olivier and his charming wife Deb are the perfect hosts - gracious, warm, accommodating, and attentive to every detail with vast knowledgeable about so many things. The crew are like fairys taking care of your every need without you knowing they are doing it. Chef Max is extraordinary and charming. The artistry of what he created on a daily basis was not lost on our group. We have never had better food. Olivier makes sure the wines with each meal are perfect....and oh those 25 cheeses we were served...and the fresh baked pastries every morning. I could just go on and on...

Cruising these canals in so pleasant ...with the only noise that of the birds singing. We are looking forward to a trip on C'est la Vie in a few years through the Champagne district. These trips are unforgettable! Highly, highly recommend.

Wine-Water Barge Cruise
Jun. 2018 • Friends
This is our third trip with Max and Bea on their barge, the “Wine and Water.” Those two are the perfect owner operators of any barge in France. They are very very helpful, without being intrusive. They’re very knowledgeable, and, again, the staff they have selected this year are amazing: Linzi and Chef Jo. The rooms are comfortable, the service is amazing, and the food is absolutely fabulous.

Canal barge trips are for visitors to walk or bike the canals, or just remain on board and enjoy the French countryside. The W/W has a jacuzzi for those inclined.
