The SOUND GARDEN Pinuccio Sciola’s open air Museum, the “Sound Garden” is an open area filled with megalithic rocks and citrus fragrances… a timeless space which stimulates, magnifies, contemplates, all senses. In this “enchanted” garden, the guides take the visitors into a universe of new sounds created by the different types of stones and the way the artist worked on them. A way to savour and appreciate art, a cultural space in which, through creativity and respect, one can even take part in “playing the stones” and experience the ancestral sound left enclosed in the matter for thousands of years.

I was visiting the murals around San Sperate and came across this magical place. €5 adult entry for a unique experience. There was a short explanation in English (for me and some Russian artists) before being shown around the hundreds of stones that looked like simple chiselled blocks - until the guide ran her fingertips along the shapes, and gently rubbed them with pebbles to make beautiful musical sounds - and they moved too. Utterly fascinating. Tears actually came to my eyes.
Then we were left to wander around and take photos by ourselves. Unforgettable.
A 30 minute bus ride from the ARST bus station in Cagliari cost €1,30 single.

We looked for activities to do on a windy day in Sardinia and visited this nice place. We’ve been nicely surprised !
The guides were kind and showed us how the stones sound.. lovely!
Really recommend to visit this place and the “Giardino Fantastico” not far away, another good surprise !

Pinuccio Sciola (15 March 1942 – 13 May 2016) was an Italian sculptor and muralist from San Sperate, Sardinia.
His work has been mentioned as a major attraction of the nearby town of Assemini.
His work has also been exhibited in Alghero.

It was a very nice trip to San Sperate and Giardino Sonoro. We were driven from Cagliari to San Sperate by our guide, Alessandro, himself. In town we have seen a lot of so called Murales, different kind of paintings and sometimes pictures on the outside walls of the houses. It was just one big public museum... Alessandro could give us a lot of information about the Murales and the painters. Because of that information, the trip was very interesting. The second part of this afternoon journey was a visit to the Giardino Sonoro, founded by Pinuccio Sciola, a famous artist who made the sculptures of 'pietre', that is stones... In this garden with so many sculptures we were guided by a woman, also very kind, who gave us very interesting information about the sculptures and the man who made them. It was almost emotional to hear the sound of these stones: very, very special. I will never forget this wonderful experience!

The story of Pinuccio Sciola, how as a child he promised his mother to create an armchair for her to stay with her friends and created it on a stone, also helps to better understand the history of the town, where some of these armchairs are found.
