About
Only 3km away from the centre of Zabljak, Malo (Small) and Veliko (Big) Lakes merge into Crno (Black) Lake. This lake is specific for its dark blue shade of water, which often seems black, and the effect is created by the Lake's depth and the dense Durmitor pine forest surrounding it.

Worth the 3 hour drive from Herceg Novi!
The lakes are very picturesque with a stunning dark emerald green colour. We opted to walk around both lakes and followed a mix of woodland trail and lake edge trails - not always easy with occasional scrambling when we went off piste! We were too early for the cascades which apparently breakthrough about June when the surrounding terrain is full of water. No matter, the walk itself was great albeit care needs to be taken - lots of rocks and tree roots to watch out for on the trail which is designated as ‘dangerous’! Just take it easy and enjoy the walk which offers some lovely views of the lakes.

    Beautiful views. Follow the path.
We enjoyed lunch at the restaurant on site and then headed out for a walk around the lake. We veered off the trail at one point and got a bit lost. I would recommend staying on the trail. It’s about 3 miles around and signs weren’t always clear about where to go. Also, there were a few parts that required scrambling up rocks. I was shocked to see people doing this in sandals. The views and the lake were beautiful.

Crno Jezero at Žabljak: A Natural Gem of Montenegro
Crno Jezero (Black Lake), nestled in the Durmitor Mountain near Žabljak, is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders of Montenegro. Surrounded by dense pine forests and majestic mountain peaks, this lake is not just a popular tourist destination but a true haven for nature lovers, adventurers, and those seeking tranquility in untouched wilderness. Stunning Natural Beauty Crno Jezero consists of two smaller lakes, the Big and Small Lakes, which merge in spring and summer as snow melts, creating a stunning sight. The lake is framed by the towering peaks of Durmitor, providing a dramatic backdrop and perfect reflections on its calm, crystal-clear waters. The atmosphere here is serene, especially in the early morning when mist gently settles over the water, making the entire setting feel like a scene from a fairy tale. A Paradise for Hiking and Adventure For hikers and adventure seekers, Crno Jezero is the perfect starting point for exploring the Durmitor mountain range. A 3.5-kilometer walking trail circles the lake, ideal for a relaxing stroll or jog, while nearby trails lead to higher peaks like Bobotov Kuk, the highest point of Durmitor. Cycling around the lake or along surrounding paths is another exhilarating way to experience the natural beauty. Peace and Relaxation For those seeking relaxation, Crno Jezero offers the perfect spot for a picnic or simply enjoying the peace and quiet. Visitors often sit by the shore, listening to the wind rustling through the pines and watching swans and ducks glide across the water. In summer, the lake’s waters are warm enough for swimming, and many can’t resist taking a refreshing dip in this natural pool. Eco-Tourism and Conservation One of the most important aspects of Crno Jezero is its ecological significance. The lake is located within Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, ensuring that it remains preserved and protected for future generations. Visitors are encouraged to follow park rules, respect the environment, and minimize their ecological footprint to help keep this pristine landscape intact. Conclusion Crno Jezero at Žabljak is a must-visit for anyone exploring Montenegro. Its natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and opportunities for adventure make it a perfect destination for all—whether you’re seeking adrenaline, relaxation, or simply admiring the wonders of nature. No matter the season, Crno Jezero offers an unforgettable experience that you’ll want to relive again and again

Our family of 5 really enjoyed swimming in the lake and hanging out for a few hours after doing other activities. We went twice and it was very busy at the weekend, but it's easy to get away from the crowds by walking round to the smaller lake which takes about 30 minutes. There is a small charge to get in but throughly worth it in our view.

It is indeed a very beautiful lake and a nice walk for those who can’t do the big hikes in durmitor. However, it is just a lake with big mountain in background… nice color but… this is it. If like many people you only do this visit for the day, you will have to pay 3 euros/person (fair) plus 2 euros for a non existent parking situated in a (public) street they can’t even control. The extra for parking seems new this year and is a complete rip off.

Black Lake is a true pearl of the mountain parts of Montenegro. This lake is located on altitude 1416 m, in Durmitor NP, and surrounded
dense forest. This forest is so dense that it casts a dark shadow over the lake, causing it to
and it appears black. Contrast between black
the middle and delicate green-blue rim of the shore is unique and coloristically inimitable. The ecological cleanliness of the place can compete with its analogues in the Alps and Scandinavia.
The natural essence of Black Lake is glacial. In fact, Black Lake consists
of two lakes connected by a narrow channel
only 70 m long. If the perimeter of the first
lake - 2 km, then the second - 1.5 km. Less
the lake is approximately the same in color, and with the same very clean and transparent water,
as well as big, thanks to which in some
In some places it can be seen to a depth of up to
9–10 m. But the small lake is twice as deep.
Together, in shape, two lakes are distant
resemble an eye, which is why Montenegrins nicknamed them “eyes of the mountains.” Sometimes in the summer the channel between the two lakes dries up, thus creating two separate bodies of water. In spring, lakes, on the contrary, can merge into a single whole. By the way, the water in the lake very cold, warms up to a maximum of +12 °C on the hottest day.
Entrance is paid, since it is a national park, costs 10.00 euros. But if on the same day you go towards the mountains, along the so-called Panoramic Road, for example to Bobotov-Kuk, then the ticket is also valid there.

This is clearly a top attraction I. The area and we enjoyed our visit but beware if a few things. First, we were told parking is free but there was a guy collecting €6 and it also created a long line to enter. He also stopped every car on the way out for some reason (we ignored him much to his unhappiness so not sure what he wanted). Also there’s supposedly a home around d the lake except that the bridge along the way is broken and you can’t traverse the waterfall so it’s apparently impossible to hike around the lake. Still it was a lovely visit and worth the stop.

Lovely walk around the black lake (2 lakes combined) which takes around 1.5 hours, the walk itself is not difficult with just one set of rocky stairs. The surrounding views are beautiful. A few people were swimming in the lake also.

We were staying in Portonovi so it was a three hour drive each way ... Ideally I would suggest you combine this with other things to do in the area (eg the bridge) otherwise it's a long way to go to just do this walk. It started pouring just as we were leaving so we had to abandon the rest of our plans.

There is a fee to enter, but it's very cheap at €5. The ticket is valid for the whole day in Durmitor National Park. I recommend visiting the lake very early in the morning, and then perhaps in the evening. The small lake is not to be underestimated; make sure you wear sturdy hiking shoes, it can be slippery after rain or in the morning.

Superb black lake easily accessible. Don’t hesitate to drive to the end of the road, there is free parking just before the park warden’s entrance post where you buy the passes. For passes if you stay several days or if you visit other parks in Montenegro, ask for the one valid for 1 year for all parks at 13,5 €. Around the lake is easy, swimming is great in crystal clear water at over 23° in August. It is better to provide shoes to go swimming because it is very rocky. The restaurant at the entrance offers stunning views of the lake and offers dishes at very reasonable Awards.

Amazing nature! Durmitor National Park includes a mountain and several lakes of which Black Lake is the most beautiful. The hiking trail around the Black Lake is amazing, of medium difficulty and passes through springs that flow down the mountain. All recommendations.

Black Lake, accessible after 10 minutes on foot on a paved road after paying 5 euros per person per day for the entrance to the dormitor national park. And 2 euros for the car depending on the location.
For the tour allow 45 minutes to 1 hour. Céline trail.

The place itself is beautiful, however it was quite crowded, so we did not spend much time here.
Easily accessible from the parking lot, there is a surface road leading to the lakes (so baby stollers and wheelchars won't be a problem). Also there is a path in the woods with fresh air, mushrooms. Those who pay attention find cranberries and raspberries along the path.
