Getting in wasn't easy due to the rocky and narrow entryway, which cannot accommodate many people. The waters are not for use however. It's only a few steps inside to check out too. A tiny bit of effort for a quick stop.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 July 2024
- Sharon Mortimer95 contributionsA gem of a caveWe parked at Hverfjall carpark and after visiting the crater decided to do the short hike to see the cave. A nice walk, with a bit of wildlife and when you arrive at the cave there are two entrances which are both worth climbing into, followed by climbing on top to see the fissure. Wasn't too busy when we were there and people were patient and taking turns in and out as there isn't a lot of room. As we were finished, a coach drew up, so I should imagine it can get quite hecticVisited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 September 2024

Once upon a time they bathed in it, then a tectonic change made the water unsuitable for bathing. Now, through two narrow passages you get to look inside, but the show isn't that sensational. Then I got there while it was snowing (yes, in July) and there was very little light inside.

Until a few years ago, this natural lake housed in a cave a few meters deep was suitable for swimming. After the "Krafla fires", the chain of eruptions that at the end of the 1970s signaled the volcano's resumption of activity, this body of water saw the temperature increase to the threshold of 60 degrees, making it impossible to dive into it. The charm of this enchanted place remains, the unexpected steaming lake inside the mountain: those who don't want to settle, however, will just have to wait. The temperature, the locals assure, is in fact constantly decreasing.
Absolutely not to be missed.

Made famous from a scene in Game of Thrones, there is a cave with a thermal pool, however the climb in and out is tricky, lots of sharp rocks above your head, and you cannot get in the water anyway...you need flash or some lighting to see the pool at its best, otherwise it is just a dark and disappointing experience. It was quiet on our visit due to the weather being poor.
The highlight of the visit was actually above the cave, where a narrow crack in the rocks marks the point where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet...so you can pose for photos with one foot on one plate and one foot on another...straddling two continents!
Our guide climbed into the gorge and took photos, but care is required to avoid slipping or falling. It was a unique experience and was more fun than the cave. Worth a visit if in the area, but it can get crowded due to its GOT connections.

Pretty little cave but it is a very popular place to visit (probably from Game of Thrones). We got to climb down near the water and snap a couple photos but there were too many people to make it enjoyable. It is beautiful though!

It's a lovely cave, but these days, it's famous for being the setting of where Game of Thrones' Jon Snow breaks his celibacy vow to the Night's Watch with Wildling Ygritte. You'll need to follow a few small signs to find your way to this small cave. Lots of posted signs remind visitors that you're on private land and bathing in the cave is not permitted. There are two entrances but it's only a few careful steps down to where you can get a look at the cave itself. Mostly you'll marvel at how they made this space look large on the television show and wonder where on earth they managed to squeeze the camera equipment to do so. If you're a fan, it's fun, but otherwise it's a skippable site unless you're in the area and want to stretch your legs.

Not sure where those photos were, somewhere hidden I guess, but to me it was a boring 1.8 km walk from the carpark basically to another carpark and then had to walk back the same way following same yellow markers through a lava field. Same story of rubble as you see from the road. Nice vegetation though, and a few sheep to look at. Wish I had spent the time to climb up outside the crater next to the carpark and look inside, although the photo panels showed that there would be no lake or much of anything inside.

Nice little cave with a parking in front of it. It's beautiful but small, so it can get crowded easily i guess. Also there's a giant crack in the eath above it which was nice to see. Water was nice and warm. Swimming not allowed.

I traveled to the cave in 2017 and unfortunately dropped my debit card in. The water was too hot at the time to get it out, im wondering if my debit card is still there!

I found Iceland to be a great place to travel and never felt I was getting ripped off. Although I'd like to return in the winter, I found traveling in the summer months rewarding because there is so much more to see and its accessible.

Can you swim in the water in the cave?
Written 7 August 2018
Some people do, but it's technically not permitted. There's a sign at the entrance advising it used to be a popular bathing spot until a volcano erupted nearby in the 70's, leaving an underground lava river heating the water to dangerous levels. Nowadays the water is not boiling hot, but half the time is really hot, so just to be on the safe side don't swim in it.

Hello! My husband and I were wondering what time is the best time for photos at Grjotagja Cave (we are going either tomorrow, July 5th or the day after on July 6th)? We have heard that there is a perfect time window that allows the sun to hit the water in a beautiful way, so we were just wondering what time that was so we could make sure to go at that time :) Thanks in advance for your help!

I used a tripod and did a long exposure photo and it came out pretty darn nice. It's fairly dark in the cave for photography.
My wife used her iPhone while holding it and it came out ok too, depends on "how nice" of a photo you want to take. A tripod using a long exposure will yield the best results : )
And if you linger for a while, we saw the crowds come and go. Also, there are two entrances, as you face it, a left one and a right one. I found that the right side offered a better photo opportunity if you climb over the rocks and work yourself to the far end of the cave.

Hi,
Do we have to pay to visit the caves?
Written 8 February 2018
Nope! Its free. Be prepared to wait to enter the cave and be very careful when climbing down. Its very wet grounds. The space is very small but there are two entrances

Suerte! Y cualquier otra consulta... Pregunte nomas!!!
