The right side trek (facing the waterfalls) has pretty steep parts so shoes with good traction soles are a must. The view are nice providing a few spots to take a stunningly sharp picture. The parking is free.

Longer and steeper hike than we expected. The last approximately 25% of the hike is over a stony poorly defined path strewn with slippery boulders. However, should be ok for a person of average fitness and agility, just take your time. The 360 degree views on the way up and down are astounding. You will pass littlefoss on the way up a small waterfall. At the end of the trail there is a viewing platform with a great vista of the waterfall. If one likes they can walk over additional boulders to get closer to the falls. Interesting waterfall, tall and surrounding earth has colored striations due to different mineral layers. We took the left hand side trail (as facing the trailhead) on the way up a steady climb. We took the other side on the way down. Different views overall less steep but punctuated with steeper intervals.

The Hengifoss Waterfall hike is well worth it. It's a longer and steeper hike than we expected. I highly recommend going all the way to the top. The multicolored layers of rock are different than anything I've ever seen. Litlanesfoss Waterfall is near the lower part of the hike, but getting all the way to Hengifoss and back takes an hour or more.
Note: In June, there was a food truck at the base of the hike called Hengifoss Food Truck which had amazing waffles and ice cream. With few places to eat in the area, it was fantastic to have a food option. The waffles and ice cream were beyond delicious.

It is around 3km hike one way to Hengifoss to a steep hill. The hike is breathtaking and worth doing. On the way there is another waterfall to admire. When we visited it was very strong wind, so it was harder to walk, but we really enjoyed it at the end. Make sure you have proper shoes as at some point closer to the waterfall you need to cross water through rocks and there is a high chance you end up stepping into it.

The return hike to see Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss was definitely worth the 2 hours, 15 minutes round trip, with lots of breaks and stopping fort pictures. The incline is a bit of a challenge, and as you think you're at the end, there is more to go still. Once at the top, you have to go further of course to see the picturesque Litlanesfoss. I am always about "good bang for buck" when it comes to effort and reward, and the higher than normal effort here yields a fantastic reward (weather permitting of course). Some useful tips include ensuring you have waterproof shoes/gear when traversing through the upper parts where you have to go through some wet areas. Hiking poles will help ease the burden some, both going up and down the slope, as well as through the water. Bring snacks and water as there are few amenities there (construction at the base when we went). Be sure to wear sunscreen with sunny conditions as there is zero shade. And finally, be sure to budget the time to experience the full hike, as well as the time to get to/from the main road. Parking can get busy there, but there was no cost to us. If you found this information helpful, please kindly consider giving a thumbs up!

The waterfalls and basalt formations were really spectacular, however, the hike was less fun. It is pretty close to just straight up the mountain. We were unfortunately there while there was a bad, icy wind. It made the already tough hike harder. The terrain is a mostly dirt path, with times of walking on small rocks.

The waterfall is spectacular.
We walked up to the waterfall about 1,5 hours. We were really lucky with the weather, it was about 25°. It was worth the walk 100%. The view is something else.
It is about 1h drive from Egilsstaðir, and there are many attractions on the way and you can grab a bite in Skriðuklaustur, about 10 min. Away. Also really beautiful place.

It took us (two women in late 20's/early 30's) about 1 hour to hike to the waterfall. The hardest part of the hike is at the beginning, as it starts out steep. As you go, it becomes less steep. About 2/3 of the way to the waterfall, you'll have a pretty good view of the falls and there's a bench. If you wanted to, you could stop there. At this point, the path becomes more narrow and muddy. We kept going. The muddy trail took us a small river. We weren't sure if we were supposed to keep going, but there was rope along the path and the rope continued so we stepped on rocks to cross the river. After the river, there are larger rocks and boulders that you need to climb over. Once again, I wasn't sure if the path continued, but we saw other people ahead and more rope so we kept going.

When the path ends, you'll know. There's a green sign that says "end of path." It was a very fulfilling hike.

We were able to hike back to our car in about half the time, going downhill was easier!

I highly recommend this hike!

A relatively long and tiring hike leads to Hengifoss waterfall, but there is Litlanesfoss waterfall in the middle of the trail. There is a built path leading up and there were relatively many people. We prefer more adventurous hikes, so the trail was not our favorite, although it was beautiful.

I had to really summon up the will to hike this after a long drive from the south coast in & out of the Eastfjords before driving on to my accommodation in Seydisfjordur. I’m glad I did. I really wanted to see this striped waterfall. It’s a steep uphill hike but thankfully not too long at just over a mile each way. You can actually see the top half of the waterfall from the start of the hike. You have the option of taking the left or right hand paths up (facing Hengifoss), if you take the right hand one, you will have to cross the bridge further up to cross over to the left hand track. I went up the left hand side then coming down I crossed the bridge to come down the rest of the way on the other side. There are WC facilities here (though no running water as at Sept 2023). They are upgrading the visitor facilities. There is the Hengifoss Snack Van available also. On the day I visited it was windy so the water was getting blown around a bit instead of falling steadily down. You also have the bonus of Litlanesfoss & it’s basalt columns half way up.
