Neighbourhood: Fitzroy
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighbourhood that embraces both old and new.

This is a great little market if you are looking for unique artisan crafts and gifts. The easiest way to get there is to hop on Tram 96 and get off at the Rose/Nicholson Street stop (Stop #14).
Rose Street is a relatively quiet street, and you can't miss the market with the banners on the footpath outside. It is open on Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 4pm. It has a range of stallholders, offering pottery, jewellery, fashion, accessories, edibles and quirky arts and crafts (stuff that you just won't find anywhere else). It's a place where you are able to talk directly with the artists and designers.
If you are in Melbourne it is well worth the visit, tie it with a visit to the nearby Fitzroy Markets (also on Rose St) and shopping on Brunswick Street.

It is indeed a small market maybe about 40 stalls? But they are of very good quality and unique products and art works. We got a scarf made of wool and some lovely cards. Good local cafe and bookshops around the area, nice to spend a short morning and brunch in this district.

Good to wander around for an hour or so.
Huge quantities of vintage used clothing and typical arty craft shops with nothing worth buying.
Good for people watching. See pretend arty types before they go back to clerking on Monday.

one of the best markets we have visited in Melbourne, nice vibe and stall holders friendly. Interesting selection of items that you dont see at other places. Great place to start your adventure in fitzroy.

In 2003 the Rose Street Market started in a former junkyard and since then, it's become an icon of Fitzroy shopping. Different to many other markets, this is an outlet for up and coming artists and designers to sell their wares to locals, Melbourneites and tourists. And believe me, their wares aren't what you'd find in mainstream stores.
Each Saturday and Sunday up to 70 creative legends set up their gazebo shelters right next to each other, squeezed in nicely giving a homely feel to the market. If you could bottle the creativity in this space you'd be an enriched person.
What I adore about the Rose Street Market is that everyone is an authentic creator of all things beautiful. They're not selling imported junk. They're not selling rip-offs of other designers. They are selling high quality and innovative pieces for people of all ages affordably priced. There is something for everyone knowing that each piece is handmade / homemade by a true artisan. I was fortunate enough to speak with Susie Monite of Drunk on Water a very talented artist whose vibrant and geometric designs are intoxicating. The picture named Starship is but one of her many creations that celebrate colour and life.
There is a lot of handmade jewellery but each of the stalls are different showcasing the artisan's individual style and talents plus the way they display their pieces is innovative and stylish.
The vibrancy of some pieces are wonderful, truly beautiful. For example, these rings by Eden and Sloane cleverly embedded in rice and necklaces on a hexagon wooden slab something you wouldn't find in any everyday department store. So you can be assured that what you buy is a one off which for me, gives me more of a connection with something.
When I visited, there was some gorgeous pottery, original printworks, unique
jewellery designs, leather goods, handmade baby wear, terrariums of every shape and size, timber furniture, awesome collection of bright cards with witty greetings and more. The toughest decision is what to buy.
Another bonus of this place is being able to talk to the artisans. What's their story? How did they get into this market? What is their passion? Putting a face to an artwork is for me - what it's all about. For example Bhunny Designs where you can make your own necklace to suit your style and colour preference. A necklace comes at a price of around $30 and considering its handmade and created designed by you, you know you'll wear it (or have one made for a friend).
STALLHOLDERS: If you'd like to have a stall at the market, stalls can be rented on a casual basis, or on a discounted regular stall rate (more than 8 stalls a season). Regular stallholders will be given a discount off the usual asking fee of $70. For more information visit the website and you'll find more information about the market at this website as well.
OPENING HOURS: 11 am to 5 pm every Saturday and Sunday.
LOCATION: 60 Rose Street, Fitzroy in between Brunswick and Nicholson Streets. (Melway Ref: 2C A5)
PARKING: Parking can be challenging but there are one hour meter parking in Brunswick Street and many of the side streets. I secured a two-hour park right out the front (yes, feeling a bit smug about that). Mid afternoon is better for parking than around lunch time.
TRANSPORT: From the city catch tram 96 from Bourke St (get off at stop 16) or 11 from Collins St. (get off at stop 17).
ATM: There are a few down Brunswick Street but there is a NAB one on the corner of Rose and Brunswick Street.
ENTRANCE FEE: No fee.
DOGS: I wouldn't recommend dogs as it's quite a tight space with stalls. Perhaps tie them up out the front but please be mindful of them on hot days.
FOOD: There are no food stalls inside but there is a great place to eat right next to the market called The Young Bloods Diner - one of the best places I've had brunch. There is a cafe called Graces not far away and around the corner another one but it had a queue so didn't end up there.
TOILET FACILITIES: There are toilets inside the market or you could be cheeky and visit the Young Bloods Diner - but please buy a coffee as a thank you.
Happy marketing.

This is a very small market - located in a small old building and a courtyard immediately in front of it. In its favour it is an artists' market so it does not include any of the tatt you normally find in the more general markets but there was not a lot of stuff there either. Not sure that it is worth a special trip.

Surprisingly small... This market kind of dissapointed. Although there were some really interesting things there, it was mostly overpriced. You'd have to go there with the intent to buy random stuff on a shopping day. It doesn't change as the week's go by aswell so its a one off trip unless maybe you were buying a gift.

We visited this Artists' Market last Sunday - we travelled on the No 96 tram - the market is a couple of stops from the Melbourne Museum on Nicholson Street, and a short walk down Rose Street. Flags at the market entrance make it easy to find.
The market of about 50 to 60 stalls is set in a warehouse with outdoor courtyard - perfect for a visit on a cold winters day. We were impressed by the quality of work on display - recycled plastic wallets/bags, a large selection of resin, ceramic and metal jewelry stalls, several card designers, oil/pen/ink/pencil artwork, clothing designers, quirky furniture, pottery and plants. Prices of creations also ranged from inexpensive earrings for $10 a pair, to more expensive original oil paintings. Some stallholders accept payment by credit cards, however some only accepted cash ... so worth taking some cash. Next door are a couple of cafes for coffee, drinks and brunch/lunch.
We've been to several artists' markets including Paddington Market (Sydney), the Esplanade market (St Kilda), the Melbourne Design Market (Fed Square) ... and the quality of the work at this market stands up very well. As it is a relatively small market the range of work is not huge ... a real feature is the unique jewelry.
TIP: We learnt after our visit that on a Saturday you can combine a visit to The Fitzroy Mills market a few doors down on the same street, which is open between 9am and 2pm. We'll definitely visit this market again ... but go again on a Saturday!

So far on of the most creative market combining hard and soft arts. only a handful of stores but each of them worthy of admiration. My favorites are the handcrafted clay art featuring cute dogs, cats and others small animals by a Japanese woman, and the terrarium corner. While worth a visit, even in the cold winter.
