Neighbourhood: Fitzroy
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighbourhood that embraces both old and new.

Reminder of the Great Austraslian Gold Rush
Aug. 2021
Fitzroy Town Hall dates from 1873, when Victoria was awash with money from the Great Australian Gold Rush. Fitzroy Town Hall is built in Classical Victorian style. It was restored to its former glory, following extensive renovations in 2007. The City of Yarra deserves commendations for the thoghtgful way it has brought the Fitzroy Town Hall back to life as a functioning community asset. It's a reminder of Victoria's civic aspirations.

When Melbourne was Queen City of the South
May 2021
The Fitzroy Town Hall was built in Classical Victorian style, when the Great Australian Gold Rush made Melbourne the richest city on Earth. The Fitzroy Town Hall was completed in 1873; it was an emblem of civic pride, with no expense spaded. It was restored in 2007, with modern lifts, air-conditioning and facilities for the disabled, including parking and drop-off facilities. Fitzroy is an area of the City of Yarra; it was Melbourne's first suburb and remains Melbourne's most densely populated area. The Fitzroy Town Hall is available for hire, it is truly a magnificent venue.

Excellent period town hall
Dec. 2019
Fitzroy Town Hall is a smallish late 19th century Townhall with lovely period features and several fine spaces available for use (except the library which is located underneath).

Boom style classicism
Nov. 2019
The Fitzroy Town Hall is of historical significance as a symbol of the growth of Melbourne during the long boom prior to the 1890s. The building is representative of the aspirations and burgeoning wealth of Melbourne during the gold rush years and a manifestation of local government rivalry, which led to the construction of a number of grand town halls throughout the city's suburbs.

The Fitzroy Town Hall is of architectural significance as a most intact and exemplary High Victorian building and for its association with two prominent Melbourne architects. It features grand Corinthian porticos and temple forms and an unusual clock tower. The building's freestanding form, fine interiors and multitude of prominent foundation stones are also distinctive.

It wasn't far to walk to from Brunswick Street and it's a stunning building. It's grandeur almost seems out of place. It does encourage one to look beyond what they think a suburb is all about... you won't see this as you are heading up/down Brunswick on a tram... you need to get out and explore. I was walking back towards the city when I turned left into Moor Street and there it was on the corner of Napier and Moor. From there you can see the soul of Fitzroy as you wander through suburban streets,

Free wifi in the library

Meeting room and an 1880’s ball room that is great for functions, larger meetings or a party. The library has an excellent selection of magazines to browse, as well as fast free wifi.

Iconic Building in Suburban Street
Nov. 2018
If you are in Brunswick Street Fitzroy you can wander down King William Street and stumble onto one of the hidden suburban treasures in among the back streets. The Fitzroy Town Hall is a remnant of the glory days of the inner city suburbs when each city had its own administration and civic buildings. Even if you can't get in, you can wander around tis great structure and soak up the history of one of Melbourne's oldest and colourful suburbs.

Similar, yet different
Aug. 2018 • Solo
The Fitzroy Town Hall is one of my favourites of the Melbourne Towns Hall from the 1870-80s. While they all seemed to take a classical view of things, the Fitzroy was not bleached white and it had triangular features at the top and was in three sections, a central one and two wings. It has been a while since I have been inside it, but I recall the inside was as fancy as the exterior.
