We walked from Starigrad to the centre of the world heritage, the omphalos. Here you can rest in the shade and have some water. The plains have been farmed for about 2.300 years according to the system instituted by Greek settlers. The crops are much the same, mainly olives and grapes. We had a great time on this ca 4 km walk.

We arrived in Stari Grad at 10:15 AM ($24 RT ferry from Split) and taxied ($13) 3.3 km east to the 1st C Kupinovik Roman Villa ruins. After seeing the stone olive press pillars and the carved lintel of a municipal councilor, we walked 1 km north on a dirt lane through the 2008 Stari Grad Plain noting the stone walled plots of groves with ripe olives, vineyards with unpicked red grapes and rows of lavender mounds. A farmer stopped and waved us over, gave us bunches of large red and white grapes, smiled and drove off. At the Komon Path sign (3rd C burial monument), we turned west for 2 km to Stari Grad where we read the detailed signboards explaining the Greek land divisions into 180 m x 900 m plots to create a cultivated Mediterranean landscape of olives, grapevine, lentils and citrus fruit that has been feeding the island of Hvar for the last 2400 years.
