Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We took the bus from Hvar to Stari Grad and wanted to cycle across the plain to Vrboska. We hired really good bikes from the hire shop just over the road from the small market. The owner was very friendly, gave us a good deal because it was already afternoon, around £5 per bike. He advised us on an easy route and told us if we had a puncture which was quite likely on the off road track to phone him and he would come and collect us. We set off across the plain, the first couple of kilometers were on a rough track but it soon improved. It didn't take long to get to Vrboska across the traffic free route, we cycled through the town crossing to the far bank and cycled along a very good path to some idyllic coves. At the nearest beach we had an excellent good value lunch.

About 1/2 mile out from Stari Grad on our return the rear tyre on my bike exploded! Limping back into town the hire shop owner took this in very good spirit. We were just glad it didn't happen on the outward leg or further away from town.

This was a fantastic way to spend the day, not much to say about the plain itself other than it is very unspoilt but both Stari Gard and Vrboska are charming towns.

A lovely day cycling from Stari Grad to Vrboska. A UNESCO world heritage site with some of the oldest continuously cultivated land in the World. Beautiful and virtually flat.
Rented the bikes from Hvar unlimited in Stari Grad (70 kuna pp) who helpfully delivered a replacement bike over lunch when the first had a puncture.

Stari Grad Plain is a UNESCO World Heritage site. One of the few large flat areas on Hvar, agricultural plots were laid out by Ionian Greeks from Paros in the 4th century BC, when they colonized the area. The grid of fields illustrates the land division system used by the ancient Greeks, the chora, which has remained virtually intact over 24 centuries. Greek colonists divided the plain into rectangular plots of 1x5 stadia, (about 180x900m), each fenced in with drywall. The limestone soil makes the plain fertile and was enhanced by a rainwater recovery system using stone tanks and gutters. Agriculture based on grapes and olives has been practiced from Greek times to the present. The plain contains scattered ruins such as ancient stone walls, fragments of carved blocks, and small stone shelters. The plain crosses the island, extending 6km from the harbor town of Stari Grad on the west to the harbor at Bonaca Vrboska on the east. One of the best ways to see it is by bicycle, where you can stop and examine stone walls, crops and ruins along the way. Bike can be rented in the town of Stari Grad. You can also walk along the main road, Put Gospojice, and explore several side tracks. The plain is fairly flat, with green hills on each side. Periodically signs in Croatian and English provide information. Some advice: wear sturdy shoes, respect the crops growing in surrounding fields (income for their owners), and take lots of water, as there is little shade. The plain is open at all times and there is no entrance fee.

A unique chunk of history close at hand to the town. Very little has changed here in 32 centuries - wow.

I hired a bike in Stari Grad (100 krona for a half day) then rode across to Dubovica beach on the other side of the island (about 10km). Some steep inclines of 10 degrees then through a tunnel. The cars were cautious to give me space on the road. Others were doing the trip on quadbikes and mopeds. Up hill back through the tunnel was awkward, so I rode on the narrow footpath in the tunnel; need to concentrate.
A nice way to get some exercise and sightseeing after a week lounging on the boat.

Riding along the road through Stari Grad Plain was a treat. The usual grape vines and olive trees of course but to know that the fields were initially set up over a thousand years ago by the Greeks gives a special sense of history. Dropping in to some farms to sample and purchase their local produce connects you further with this UNESCO listed area. A lovely peddle.

It was very interesting to see the Stari Grad Plain and all of the crops that are grown there. It is beyond just vineyards. Its a beautiful and peaceful walk or ride. If its a hot day please bring plenty of water as the sun is directly on you.

My family and I walked an evening through this wonderful Stari Grad Plain to Vrboska, a beautiful small town with a bay on the other side of the Plain. Stari Grad Plain is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and it is now celebrating 2400 years of its foundation by the Ancient Greeks. You can walk or cycle through the Plain which is full of vineyards and olive trees and some archeological testimonials from that period.

I much preferred Stari Grad to Hvar town and enjoyed 4 nights here exploring the old cobbled streets, swimming in unspoiled waters at the nearby reserve, walking to hillside churches surrounded by lavender and vineyards, wild figs... The list goes on! Walkers will get the most pleasure as there is a lot of local, natural beauty :)
