Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We visited the carrière du Roy with three children aged 7, 12, 13. Explanations are provided in French and it’s nice to see red marble. However, the pictures on TripAdvisor are misleading as they show the carrière which one cannot visit. It is clearly highlighted that entrance is prohibited which is a shame as that seemed like the most impressive sight.

From the center of Caunes-Minervois, it will take you 30 minutes by foot up hill. Or you choose to go by car and to the last 600 m by foot.
This abandoned quarry shows how in the 17th till 19th century this quarry operated. How columns were extracted and how they invented in the late 18th century the cutting of the marble blocks with long iron chains.
The view over the gorge is breathtaking, one wonders how they managed to get the heavy marble blocks out of the quarry and on the road.
When hot temperatures in summer, don't forget to take water with you.

Seeing a quarry firsthand is an interesting experience. We were guided by volunteers with impressive knowledge of the geology and history. Now we will notice red marble in important places we visit, and know where it came from! The quarry visit is a niche kind of experience involving quite a hike that not everyone would enjoy, but we certainly did.

The marble quarries at Caunes-Minervois make an interesting different visit in the area.
The Carriere de Roy is the star of the more than 30 quarries that dot the hillsides above the village of Caunes. Recently new interpretative boards have been put in place to give you a good idea of the history of this royal quarry and how the red marble was shipped for Louis XIV to adorn the palace of Versailles among other royal buildings (in French only). The quarry is on the edge of the gorge of the Cros and affords beautiful views of the gorge and south towards the Corbiere and the Pyrenees.
The grey marble quarry, a historic monument, is nearby where a mock-up of the old marble cutting cable system has been put in place.
Many of the quarries are small and are hidden on the garrigue.
You can pick up a leaflet for the Route des Marbrieres footpaths at the Caunes tourist office near the abbey. You can walk to the quarry from the village - with fabulous views of the surrounding countryside - or drive up to the car parks.
The marbrieres' voluntary association of Caunes looks after the quarries and take guided tours on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year. You can find more information at the tourist office or on its website (link posted in this review).

Not your average tourist trap. This is a quiet walk along and enjoy kind of experince; the wild flowers, the red marble - even if it is now defunct; worth a little sidestep.

Very thunderous walk in the middle of the blocks of red marble.
A trail allows you to discover the methods of extracting marble thanks to explanatory panels.
We allowed ourselves to go into the quarry which seems to be abandoned: it's impressive!!
