Banteay Chhmar (the “Citadel of the Cat”) has been called the "second Angkor Wat” and was constructed by King Jayavarman VII, who also built Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm and Preah Khan. This remote and vast site is currently under restoration and visitors find a stunning interplay of temple and jungle.

The temple was amazing. Really fun to explore alone. Banteay Chhmar was really a slice of country living.

This temple is in terrible shape, which I loved. Felt very Indiana Jones/Laura Croft while exploring. The Banteay Chhmar Community-Based Tourism (CBT) group is very helpful and we loved the simple homestay with the Sril Som family.

The jungle has encroached on this very large site which needs much more restoration. But it is this partially recovered quality which is so attractive. It is worth getting a guide (from the CBT Homestay Centre?) as the carvings on the walls need interpretation and...More
