- Rebecca W6 contributionsInteresting market with lots of activityAn interesting visit if you have an experienced guide with you. Our guide Tesfaye with the nick-name Fish was great! VERY invested and could tell great stories about the fish market and the daily lives of the locals. He also knew a lot about all different species of birds and monkeys in the area. To book him: +251 (0) 91 677 8650 You get to see the fishermen do their work and at the same time experience a blend of birds, like the Maribou stork. Market did not smell at all. In the local park next to the market you get to see beautiful nature, more birds and some monkeys, like the Colobus monkey. Very nice!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 June 2024

- EdupratAguadilla, Puerto Rico79 contributionsVery interesting and folkloric experienceThis is an interesting place. Very primitive, lots of fish being handled and prepared on the floor. Beautiful scenes of boats and nets. Large birds being fed with fish remains. Our local guide for the market was Tesfaye, nicknamed "fish" he told us. A very friendly, colorful and fun guide thoroughly knowledgeable about all details of the market.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 August 2024

The hassle begins at the entrance. There is no set fee, a man with a receipt book decides what you will pay by sizing you up. In our case 100ETB per adult (nothing for kids). While ticket man was lovely, an aggressive young man with good English insisted a guide would be 200 ETB. We knew from Ethiopian colleagues this was not the case and after some to-and-fro he agreed, though not in the usual good-natured Ethiopian way but in a sullen and quite threatening manner.
We enjoyed the visit, the Marabou Storks are amazing and our young son was thrilled to find an enormous wing-feather on the ground. The views as the boats puddled around was lovely. It was a nice way to pass an hour and a short walk from our hotel (Lewi Resort) was pretty. A good way to pass a morning.

Very interesting to see the fisherman come in with their catches of mainly tilapia and catfish. Many photo opportunities including the marabou storks which fly down from their perches on the tops of the trees. Watch the fish being gutted then sold, also the many food stalls with locals sitting eating breakfast of fresh raw fish with chilli sauces.
There are a few children who hassle tourists for money but it's not really a problem.

Early morning, on Awassa lake, visiting thr fish market is quite an experience. Watching the small fishing boats, with young children preparing the nets, throwing fish skins to the huge birds...
Try the raw fish, sushi like...

Very nice place for buying fish or Ethiopian sushi and if you are a bird lover this a place to stay at least one night.
There is a park just 200 meters away where you can see monkeys and lots of birds. Is a must.

Locally known as "Amora Gedel", the Fish Market at Awassa Lake is a nice spot to see how locals eat fried and raw fresh catch fish for breakfast. People also sell fish soup. This Fish Market is also great place to spot a number of water birds. This market is worth visiting in the mornings as it is busier and more livelier. Look also for the vervet monkeys and Colobus (Black and White) Monkeys around

best is to go in the early morning when there is the most activity. Nice to see how many people are cleaning their fishes while lot of birds (mainly maraboes) are walking in between the people.

Must not miss visiting the fish market whenever you stop by at hawassa... its an interesting place to visit specially at weekends in the morning when all the fishermen meet up to sell their catches of various fish and exotic creatures... its a bit crowded and you would be bugged by many venders... if you luck you can see a couple of hippos as they avoid the crowd... but various monkeys and birds.... specially pelicans and ducks are there... still the main attraction is the market itself.

Nothing interesting to see. You must pay for a “guide” to escort you but poor English skills prevented any helpful information.

Need prices for tours and do they pick up from hotel

Usually there are guides at the hotel, you can talk to the reception and they will bring you a Guide.
Or you can take a tuk tuk, and then ask him to drive you to the fish Market. Then you will find many guides there and can have a boat trip in the Lake...
