    Don’t miss this
Meteora is a very special place, but one that isn’t always on the itineraries of visitors to Greece. We went on a day trip and visited two of the monasteries. The location in the mountains is just beautiful and very evocative. In the off season when we were there, the monasteries are only open on certain days. They are at the tops of cliff and mountains to protect the inhabitants in centuries past from marauders. Today the beauty of the artwork and its significance are enthralling. I’m really happy we took the time to do this trip because it’s very unique and special.

Make this a 2 day trip!
Meteora has been on my bucket list for 20 years! I saw Metorea in the 1981 James Bond film and I knew I had to see these Monasteries. We opted for an overnight tour in this region because of the 4.5 hour one way train ride from Athens. They offer a day trip, but it would be very rushed. We did the Sunset tour and a hiking tour of Meteora and we had fantastic lodging at a boutique inn. There is beauty all around and the village is fun to explore as well so I highly suggest an overnight to take in this magical place.

Epic Views from Atop the Cliffs
Stunning monasteries constructed on the top of various rock out cropping. Not all are open every day, and so you don't get to see all of them, but because of staggered opening days, you will always get to see the interior of at least one. Beautiful views. You can climb the rocks and get as many different angles as you like. We drove, so could stop wherever we wanted to -- but buses were dropping off 50-60 people at a time. All of the monasteries have been refurbished, so you will not be seeing buildings from bygone years, but the locations are still epic.

    a must see
This is a must see in Greece for those inclined. One needs to be fairly fit to climb the steps up to the monastery. It's a long bus ride from Athens, so an overnight in Kalambaca is recommended. The massive stones that rise up are unlike anything you've seen. It boggles the mind that numerous monasteries were built way up there.

    Pretty gnarly
If you’re in the area take the time to check out the area. Rather than get on the “ public” tour bus from Kalambaka we hired some e bikes from Meteora E-bike hire which gave us the ability to work around the HUGE number of tourist buses that unload tourists oblivious to the needs and path sharing of others. St Nikolas was our first and favourite. Be prepared to climb looooots of stairs.

    Great day trip!
I came here with my 18 year old son. We took a taxi from town to,drops us off at the last monastery. We then walked to the others. We took the foot path back to,town which was located at the first monastery. There is a printed sign with Kamblaka written on it. This is a stone path which was hard on the feet but it only took about thirty minutes to,get back to town.

    Beyond awesome
One of the most spectacular locations in Greece, or anywhere, for that matter. Don’t think you can do all the monasteries in a day. You shouldn’t. And absorb what’s going on in this place, so limit your selfies. There’s a reason why these were built where they are, so be respectful and appreciative of the faith and persistence. Dress appropriately (both men and women); they will give you a “wrap” for shorts that are too short. The iconography and collection of artifacts are worth dawdling over (but you will see the “sprinters” racing through taking pictures of everything and seeing nothing at all).

    Wheeling around a magical landscape
It's an absolutely breathtaking place. We stayed in Kastraki for 2 nights and I would highly recommend making an effort to stay in the Meteora area and renting a scooter to make the most of your visit. We saw so many tourists walking up and down the hills/karsts...so physically taxing! We saw all the monasteries, enjoyed 2 sunsets from above and had the privilege of stopping at any point to take awesome pics. Our favorite was St. Stephen's...the smallest monastery. Don't miss the sunset at one of two Lookout points. 3 Euro entry charge at most of the monasteries

    Worth the Train Ride
You'll never see anything like it. We had a blast learning the history of the monasteries, soaking in the amazing views and watching sunsets. Definitely well worth the extra travel.

    Friend Ntina was inspired
Ntina Mpinou was deeply inspired by Meteora Monastery. “Men were inspired to create these miracles,” said Dina. “God gave me the strength to visit the miraculous icons. These icons have brought miracles to my life.” Ntina bought a certified icon of Panagia and a miniature replica of Grand Meteora monastery as a gift for her parents. The 3 day Meteora Kapogianni s Tour was only 150 euros per person. .

What an amazing place! This really is a must-see.
We drove from Thessaloniki and then took the 10 km road that goes around the area. At every turn, the views are incredible.
Lots of tour buses filling the narrow road so you need to drive carefully.
Strong recommendation if you have an opportunity to visit.

What as astonish geological formations, what a determination of humans to find a way to reach the top these formation and build over 30 monasteries.

We had a great time at Meteora despite it being a long day. It was a day well spent. Thanks to Manos' expertise in handling such a tour.

Such an overwhelming place that I recommend to visit. Awesome and beautiful landscape. I suggest to go as soon as possible to avoid long queues in the monasteries, and to check in advance which ones are opened to the public and their timetables

If this place isn't on your bucket list, it should be!

Weather cooperating, the stunning combination of insane rock formations and beautiful monasteries makes this like no other place on Earth!

One of the main wonders of the world. This is a place of mindfulness and tranquility. A series of mountain top monasteries. Fish in history. This was the most spectacular sight we saw in Greece and probably beats many other sights outside Greece as well.

We were there in mid November 2023. This is one of the most unique places we have ever visited. Very picturesque. We stayed at the Tsikeli Hotel (Adults only) which is at the base of the road going up to the monasteries. Parking is on a not too busy side road. The hotel is very nice, clean and comfortable. The staff are very nice, polite and helpful. Temperatures were comfortable (we are used to Hawaii weather). The heat and A/C worked well in the room. The hotel restaurant is great. The free breakfast is awesome with many choices of food to get you started on your busy day of hiking. Driving to the monasteries is easy and there are places to park at each one. Keep in mind that we were there during off-season. During peak season, parking, driving, restaurants, etc. will be much more crowded. There are different levels of difficulties of hiking depending on which Monastery you want to visit. The hotel staff pointed this out to us. When visiting the monasteries, there is a dress code for men and women. Enjoy your stay here. A definite bucket-list place to see.

Definitely worth the visit. Its about 5 hrs train ride from Athens. Train ride was excellent. If you can visit 3 or max 4 churches, its more than enough. Staying overnight is good since the sunset is amazing.
we rented a taxi from the station and he charged 20 euros per hour. it was a good decision. If one has visited Lalibela in Ethiopia, gets a better perspective and appreciation

Nothing short of amazing the scenery in Meteora, multiple lookouts to see along the road that loops around the valley.

In the mountains the higher the better for scenery and you get great views of multiple monasteries, as well as views overlooking the valley and city.

A real highlight of my trip to Greece.
